2 Gala Day 2017 It s all about Sustainability! Gala day this year is Saturday 25th November. For those who are new to our school, our Gala Day is our version of a Calf Club (without the animals), a family fun day and our biggest fundraising opportunity for the year. The Pokeno School P.T.A spend countless hours organising cake stalls, raffles, carnival style games and rides to entertain our community. The classrooms are decorated with children s artworks and the more traditional calf club floral, baking and construction projects. The art work on display will have been completed over the course of the year as part of classroom learning programs. Most of the floral, baking and construction projects will need to be practised and/or completed in the weeks before show day with parents and caregivers at home. The whole school will spend most of Friday 24th November making the floral projects for display. We have judges from our local community to judge the children s projects and award certificates. We also have three longstanding trophies that are awarded to the Year 7 & 8 students for obtaining the most points for their floral, baking and construction projects. The Mrs Hale cup for cookery was first presented in 1951, The Averill Cup for floral projects was first presented in 1965 and the PTA cup for the overall winner was first presented in 1968! Our curriculum focus this year is sustainability so children will need to take this on board when planning their floral, baking and construction projects. As each family will only be given one paper copy of this booklet, please visit the school website if you need to download any additional copies. 3 FLORAL PROJECTS Floral projects 1 & 2 are to be made at home before the 24th November. We ask that parents and caregivers support Room 1-5 students to attempt at least 3 floral projects. We ask that parents and caregivers support Room 8-10 students to attempt at least 4 floral projects. Floral Project 2: Floral arrangement in a recycled container Using a recyclable container e.g. milk bottle or milk carton; create a planter pot for a plant. Adding a plant can be an added extra. Floral Project 1: Patty Cake Flowers This floral project will be made at home. There are several examples on the internet if you need inspiration. 1. Patty Cake Flowers Criteria The Patty Cake flower looks like a flower. The Patty Cake flower shows petals. The Patty Cake flower shows a centre of a flower. The Patty Cake flower shows the use of different materials. Recycled Plant Pot Criteria The Plant Pot is made from a container that is or can be recycled. The Plant Pot must be painted and can have adornments added. The Plant Pot must be able to stand or be able to be attached to a vertical surface.

4 FLORAL PROJECTS These projects are to be constructed at school on the 24th November. Floral Project 3: Vaseline Saucer This floral project will be made at school. There are several examples on the internet if you need inspiration. Vaseline Saucer Criteria The Vaseline saucer should be decorated with petals, leaves or natural decorations. Thought has been put into the choice and usage of petals, leaves and grasses. Symmetry and coverage of saucer will be considered when judging. Note - please ensure your child has brought their own saucer and Vaseline

5 FLORAL PROJECTS These projects are to be constructed at school on the 24th November. Floral Project 5: Buttonhole Floral Project 4: Leaf Art Using leaves create an artistic picture. Some suggestions of Leaf Art are; faces, insects, animals, fish or birds. The leaves can be dried or fresh but must be natural. Leaf Art Criteria The Leaf Art must use only natural leaves. The buttonhole dates back to the days when men wore suits and adorned them with a flower. If you have access to the internet, there are some great ideas on florists websites. Buttonholes need to have a single bloom and a small amount of greenery securely bound together with wire (bread tie) and tinfoil. If you wanted to be creative with coloured cotton or ribbon, this may add an interesting effect to the arrangement. Buttonhole Criteria A single, size appropriate flower has been used. Greenery and other adornments do not overshadow the flower. The buttonhole is wrapped neatly and tightly in tinfoil or cotton. The buttonhole must be able to be attached to a shirt or jacket.

6 FLORAL PROJECTS This project is to be constructed at school on the 24th November. Floral Project 6: Natural Creations Natural Creations These are always a favourite!! Children need to select natural materials to make a sculpture. Children may use toothpicks, pins and straws to hold together their creation. Try searching the internet as there are some really cool photos. This project will be completed at school on Friday 24 th November. Natural Creation Criteria Only natural materials have been used. (This includes leaves, flowers, sticks, grasses, shells etc.) It must be imaginative and free standing. Natural creations may be held together with toothpicks. Hot glue or blu tack used to hold together Natural Creations does not visually detract from the creation. The natural creation has been constructed at school.

Construction Project 1: Desk Organiser made of Recycled Materials This project is an optional project that will need to be completed at home before being brought into school for judging on 24 th November. Using recycled materials such as cereal boxes and toilet paper/paper towel rolls, create a desk organizer for your school desk. Think about what you have on your desk that needs to be kept tidy e.g. pens, pencils, eraser, ruler, scissors. The Desk Organizer must have at least 3 different sized compartments. The Desk Organizer needs to be decorated. Desk Organizer Criteria The Desk Organizer must be made from recycled materials. The Desk Organizer must have at least 3 compartments of different sizes. The Desk Organizer must be decorated.

Construction Project 2: Robot made from Recycled Materials This project is an optional project that will need to be completed at home before being brought into school for judging on 24 th November. Using any recycled materials create a robot. The Robot must be decorated and have a name. Robot Criteria The Robot must be made from recycled materials. The Robot must be freestanding. The Robot must be decorated. The Robot must have a name.

Construction Project 3: Old Clothes Pillow This project is an optional project that will need to be completed at home before being brought into school for judging on 24 th November. Using old pieces of clothing, make a cushion/pillow that can be used. We all have old clothes that we don t wear anymore. Jeans, pants, shorts and shirts can be used. Look for interesting designs and patterns in the fabric. Buckles, zips and buttons that are on the clothing can be used also. Old Clothes Pillow/ Cushion Criteria The Old Clothes Pillow/ Cushion must be made from old clothes you no longer fit or need. The Old Clothes Pillow/ Cushion must be able to be used. The Old Clothes Pillow/ Cushion must be filled with stuffing.

12 BAKING PROJECTS The baking projects are OPTIONAL however we would like to encourage ALL students to attempt at least ONE. Baking Project 1: Decorated Cookie We are not looking for New Zealand s Hottest Home Baker and acknowledge that baking goods are expensive so this project is optional. We also appreciate that this project may not be possible for some of our families. Baking projects need to be completed at home by the students (with as little parent help as possible) and brought into school for judging on the 24 th November. Please cover baking with plastic wrap or zip lock bag carefully and discreetly name any dishes used. The judging of this baking project will focus on the icing of the biscuit. Students need to: Present no more than 3 decorated biscuits on a paper plate. Decorate using icing and edible decorations. There should be an obvious theme.

13 BAKING PROJECTS The baking projects are OPTIONAL however we would like to encourage ALL students to attempt at least ONE. Baking Project 2: No Bake Baking The project is an optional project that will need to be completed at home. The judging of this baking project will focus on the taste and presentation of this piece of uncooked baking. Students need to: Present at least 3 pieces of their No Bake Baking on a paper plate. Have a copy of the recipe available for the judges. The No Bake Baking can be iced and/ or decorated.

14 YEAR 7 & 8 ONLY Please bring cake into school on the morning of the 24th November. Decorated Cake This is an optional project to be completed at home; however to be eligible for the Mrs Hale Cookery Cup, three cooking projects must be entered. These cakes in the past have been works of art that students have put a lot of thought, practice and effort into. Students are encouraged to use their imaginations to decorate a cake in a theme of their choice. All elements on the cake must be edible. The cakes are judged using the below criteria by Brian Wallace who is a Chef Lecturer at Manukau Institute of Technology. Criteria: Mark: Total: Is the cake edible?
