3 General Rules and Regulations pen Class 1. pen to residents of Montgomery County and adjacent counties. 2. Entry fee $1.00 per exhibit. 3. Entry tags are attached to this booklet please complete and bring with you to check in. 4. Professionals or any person owning a shop or earning a living from this work is barred from this division. 5. Management will not be responsible for any loss or damage that may occur. 6. Each entry will be judged on its own merit and will be awarded ribbons and cash on the basis of Purple - $2.00, Blue - $2.00, Red - $1.50, and White - $ If the judge finds items of exceptional merit, he/she may award a Champion ribbon (purple). 8. Ribbons will be placed with exhibits. 9. Premium money for flowers, gardening, arts and crafts, photography, and baking must be picked up at check out on Sunday. Unclaimed premium money will become property of the Montgomery County Fair and will not be mailed out after Fair. 10. EXHIBITS MUST BE REMVED BETWEEN 12:30 and 2:30 PM N SUNDAY, JULY 23rd. The Fair Board is not responsible for items left at the fairgrounds after 2:30 pm on Sunday, July 23 rd. 11. See previous page for check-in and judging schedule.

4 Arts & Crafts Superintendent: JoAnn Hartstack and Shirley Koppen Additional rules and regulations for this division: 1. An exhibitor is limited to three (3) entries in this division. 2. Classes will be subdivided for: Adults, Youth under 18, and residents of Nursing Homes. 3. All items need to have been created since August of the previous year, (since last fair). An older item may be shown for exhibit but will not be judged or receive premium. Classes: Needlework 1. Crocheting, knitting, tatting 2. 5 Gardening pen Class Superintendent: Wanda Johnson Additional rules and regulations for this division: 1. An exhibitor is limited to one (1) entry per class in this division. 2. There is no limit to the number of classes an individual may enter. 3. Classes will be sub-divided for: Adult and Youth Under Each variety of vegetable or fruit is a separate class. Example: Green bean, yellow bean and purple bean would each be a class. 5. Exhibits are shown on white paper plates provided by the exhibitor. 6. Exhibits will be evaluated using criteria in Harvesting and Preparing Vegetables for Exhibit: 4-H-462. This publication is available at the Montgomery County Extension ffice or available online at Classes: 27. Vegetable specimen Publication 4-H-462 gives number of vegetables to exhibit. Each variety will be a separate class. Example: green bean, yellow bean, and purple bean would each be a class. 28. 6 PHTGRAPHY Superintendent: Wanda Johnson Additional rules and regulations for this division: 1. An exhibitor is limited to three (3) entries in this division. 2. Classes will be subdivided for: Adult and Youth under Photography may be either black and white or color. 4. Photographs must be at least 5 X 7 inches and suitable mounted on a mat or cardboard of appropriate size and color. 5. Prints may be cropped to improve the composition. 6. Captions are optional. If used, they should not exceed 5 words. 7. All photographs must be identified with the label included in this booklet. Judging Guidelines Each entry should be considered equal. No special points should be given to entries with expensive cameras and equipment. Judges should criticize only those factors over which that participant has control. Participant has control: (Before processing and printing): Composition placement of subject Subject choice Lighting on subject Photograph in focus What impact does the photograph have? Participants do not have control over film processing or print quality, except for self developing. After the prints are returned from the processor the participant again has control over: Choice of mounting board How photograph is cropped Captions, must be no longer than 5 words if used. Board and print should be neatly cut with razor blade and straight edge. Classes: 41. Landscape 42. People 43. Animals

7 CRITERIA FR PEN CLASS PHTGRAPHY EXHIBITS Storytelling Ability A photograph should communicate a message to the viewer immediately. This may be because of what the subjects are doing, where they are looking, how they are placed or who and what they are. Many factors help a picture tell a story... light, shadows, focus of foreground and background, camera angle, and subject distance from the camera. Light can be controlled by the photographer to show detail or to create a mood. Camera angle is important because the photographer can eliminate distracting elements in the picture by pointing the camera up or down. For most pictures, the photographers should get as close as possible to the subject... fill the viewfinder with what is to be photographed, which eliminates unnecessary objects in the picture. Composition Everything in the picture should be logically and pleasingly arranged. Elements should lead the viewer s eye to the important part of the picture. Subjects should not be staring into the camera lens when the picture is taken. Some objects in the foreground give a feeling of depth. The horizontal line should not be centered. A third of the way from the top of bottom is better. Tall subjects call for a vertical format. The picture should not be cluttered. A photograph with good composition has good general appearance and is pleasing to the eye. Mounting Prints can be attached to mounting boards with rubber cement, thinned glue or adhesive mounting tissue. The boards may be white or a color. The size and shape of the mounting board would be in proportion to the size and shape of the photograph. See example below: These are only examples. There is no limit to the number of classes that an individual may enter. 3. Each color or variety of a rose, gladiola, zinnia, etc. is a separate class. 4. No noxious weeds are allowed. Division is divided into Adult and Youth under Entries should be placed on/in disposable containers and include a copy of the recipe. 4. Entries may be displayed at exhibitor s discretion. For example: canned goods may be taken home after judging. 5. Entries will be cut and judged for flavor, texture, etc. 6.
