2 At the Fair: A History Fairs have been around for centuries in Asia and Europe and arrived in Canada with British immigration. The first Canadian fair was held in Windsor, Nova Scotia, in By the 1800s, agricultural societies and the fairs they held were well established in Upper Canada. They were so popular that by 1846, an all Ontario organization was formed to provide support for the growing number of agricultural associations. The fair was a place for business. It offered manufacturers and farmers the opportunity to advertise their products. Manufacturers of a variety of items, such as household products and farm and industrial equipment, would exhibit their wares for people to see. The Western Fair, held annually in London, Ontario, was first established in 1868 as an industrial and agricultural exhibition. The founders hoped to enhance London s progress and future prosperity through the fair. Not only was the fair an exhibition space, it was also a place for people to learn about agriculture. The newest crops and machinery, as well as the latest techniques in cultivation and breeding practices, were on show at the fair. Competitions in livestock, crop production, and useful arts, such as domestic production, textiles, butter and cheese making, furniture and rope making, drawing, painting, and photography, encouraged healthy competition between neighbours. The agricultural associations that organized the fairs hoped that those who did not win a ribbon would be encouraged to improve for the following year. The fair was also a place for socializing and entertainment. It was a perfect place to introduce new cultural items such as plays and music. The military also entertained the public with riding and artillery drills. This was especially true at 2

3 the Western Fair, which was always closely associated with the military; the fair was originally held on the military grounds (now Victoria Park). Other forms of entertainement were contests that allowed visitors to compete against each other. These included plowing matches and manly sporting competitions. At the first Canadian fair in 1765, the prize for the best wrestler was a lace hat and a pair of spurs. Fanshawe Pioneer Village continues the proud Ontario tradition of the agricultural fair. We host threshing and sawing demonstrations using antique machinery from our collection. We also encourage volunteers and visitors to contribute to the fair by entering handicrafts, produce, artwork, and domestic products. Games and musical entertainment help make the Fanshawe, like its predecessors, an educational and entertaining outing for the whole family. 3

4 Rules and Regulations 1. Submissions are welcome from visitors, volunteers, and staff of Fanshawe Pioneer Village. 2. All submissions must be the sole property of the exhibitor. 3. Each submission must have a completed fair ticket attached. At the back of this booklet are fair tickets that you may cut out and attach to your entry. Fair tickets can also be obtained when you submit your entry. Please fill out the fair ticket completely or your entry cannot be accepted. 4. Early submissions are preferred. Submissions are accepted starting one week in advance of the fair. 5. All items must be submitted no later than 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 20th. 6. Day-of submissions must be brought to the Corbett Tavern, with a completed fair ticket attached, before 9:00 a.m. 7. All entries must remain on display until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 21st. 8. Articles can be collected after 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 21st, at the Corbett Tavern. Starting Monday, August 22nd, articles can be collected at the Spriet Family Visitor Centre from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Special arrangements can be made for pickup and return of entries. 9. Fanshawe Pioneer Village will do its best to protect the items submitted for display at the fair, but cannot be held liable for damage or theft. No submissions will be accepted after 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 20th Judging will take place from 9:00 a.m. 10:00 a.m. The Fair Judge s decisions are final. 4

Come to Fanshawe Pioneer Village and see historic farming demonstrations and harvest activities including threshing, plowing, sawing, blacksmithing, and printing. Learn how new agricultural machinery transformed farming during the Industrial Revolution. View antique tractors as they work to bring in the harvest and take a tour of the village and fields on one of our hay wagons. 9

10 When you re tired out from all the activity in the fields, wander over to the Corbett Tavern to view the fair entries. Take a break at the Café and have your own thresherman s dinner while enjoying live musical entertainment and games of chance in Victoria Park.
