The students compare the photograph and the outline. The students listen to track 1.1 and answer. Next, they draw the circus characters and colour them. At the end of every lesson in this unit, play Clean up song, track 0.2. See Teacher s Book, p. 8 for the lyrics. Draw and colour the circus characters. Resources in the i book ART MASTERPIECES seven 7 Anticipating difficulties The human figure is very difficult for children to draw. Revise body parts, then volunteers act out different postures. Track 1.1: Circus characters Listen and say: the clown or the dancer. Who has got a flower? The clown or the dancer? The clown. Who has got a dress? The clown or the dancer? The dancer. Now you! Who has got a black hat? Who has got red hair? Who has got his eyes open? Who has got her eyes closed? Draw and colour the circus characters. Students will examine the painting L acrobate sur le cheval (Acrobat on horse) by Fernand Léger ( ). Léger began studying architecture but then changed to art. His first paintings were in the Cubist style. He is famous for his stained glass, mosaics, ceramics, tapestries and stage designs. Some of the most recurrent themes in his work are circus scenes, jazz music and natural environments full of trees and flowers. In many of his paintings, the figures are outlined in black to separate them from the background. Colour with crayons. Tell your partner: Point to the body parts on the page and say bone or muscle. Describe the steps to follow: Cut off the page at the dotted line. Then, carefully cut out the pieces. Punch holes in all the pieces. Put the parts together with split pins. The students complete the craft individually. Then, in pairs, they invent a simple dialogue for their dancers. Finally, they act out the dialogues in front of the class. Anticipating difficulties To make the separate pieces stiffer, students can glue them onto card before cutting them out. 2. Play the drawing dictation, track 1.3. The students listen and draw the clown. Pause after each part of the description to give students time to complete the clown. When they have finished, the students compare their drawings. CREATIVITY DRAWING DICTATION Let's go to the circus! Track 1.3 Listen and draw the clown. In the centre of the paper, draw a clown standing on a ball. He s got a happy face. He s got red hair and big, green glasses. He s got flowers in his hand. Set the scene before listening to the music: What games do you play with your friends? Imagine you are in a park. There are children playing. Listen to the music and draw you and your friends playing games. 18

Ask: What shape is the head? What shape are the arms? Etc. Give out pieces of plasticine of different colours. Play the song I m plasticine, track 0.3 while students work on the craft. See Teacher s Book, p. 8. The students make simple geometric shapes out of the plasticine and arrange them to make the clown s figure. For example, they use a triangle to make a hat, a big rectangle for the body and smaller rectangles for the arms, legs and shoes. Once they have shaped and arranged the pieces, the students glue their clown figures onto card. Afterwards, they make the clown s face, buttons and balloon out of plasticine. After students have completed the craft, play the Clean up song, track 0.2. Finally, ask the students about the difficulties they had making their clown. What was the most difficult part to do? Anticipating difficulties Encourage students to express their own creativity and not simply copy the model. 19
