Renita and I have been very busy at school with our 8 students. We have been studying Earth Smart which includes recycling, reducing, repurposing rubbish. This includes a technology unit on Boat Building, Bees wax wraps as well as Art and Sport. We are hoping to get the worm farm up and running soon as well, along with the usual Reading, Writing (recounts and narratives) and Numeracy. All the children have completed assessments in the core subjects and parents are welcome to come and talk to us at any time about their children s progress. Many thanks to the staff, children, parents and community members who have made me feel so welcome. Much appreciated. I will be here again next term all going well. We had an exciting visit to Tora Beach in week 3 to study the beach environment including rocks, sea creatures, a surfer and we also did some measuring and art work on the shore. Many thanks to Jenny, Louise and Noeline for supplying us all with a delicious morning tea and lunch. It was interesting for me to see some more of the local area. Thanks also to Kevin and Charmaine who keep the school (and my lawns) looking so attractive. Kind regards Pat and Renita What s coming up at school Tuesday 4th September Monday 10th September Tuesday 11th September - BOT meeting 3pm - All welcome - Year 7/8 vaccinations - Attending Martinborough School Production Friday 28th September - Last day Term 3 Monday 15th October - Starting day Term 4 Needed at school: Newspaper please Every 2nd Thursday - Playgroup in the Activity Room starting at 10am all welcome. 2 Trip to Tora Beach At 9am the whole school went to Tora beach. We walked down to the rocks and we saw ten crabs. We found some birds and some other cool stuff. We all walked back to the cars and we had morning tea and some other food. It was fun. TORA BEACH We went to the beach. We found some crabs and seaweed. Next we went to Cameron s house for lunch. That afternoon we went back to the beach. We splashed in the water It Next we hopped into the cars and went to the creek where Kerstin helped us find some crystals, that was fun too. After that we walked up to the Rosemans house and we had lunch. It was Kapai because the mummies made the Kai for us. At 1pm we all went to Tora Beach again and we went swimming. We made some cool pictures with the beach material. It was a fun day. By Patience Fairclough was the best day ever! By David Our Beach Trip Our Beach Trip On Tuesday the whole school went to the beach. The school was going to meet at the surfing place. First we got this booklet and had to get the things that were in the book. We found crabs and Jacob found a fish. We went back to have morning tea. There was heaps of morning tea, then we played on the beach a little bit. Next we hopped in the car and went to the river to find rocks. Mrs Ross and the children went through the fence and went over a river to Cameron s house and had lunch. Soon afterwards we played hide and seek. Next we went back to the beach and did some maths. We worked out how big a Great White shark is, the whole school fitted into his tummy! Next we did a competition to see who made the best beach picture. The whole school went to Tora beach. We went to look for rocks and shells that were in a booklet. I found a crab under the rock. After we did that we had morning tea at 10am. We had apples, muesli bars, chips and the adults had a scone and a cup of tea from Jenny Boyne. After morning tea we walked down to my house for lunch. All the kids had sausage rolls, little mince pies and for pudding we had fruit salad and a marshmallow. That afternoon we played hide and go seek. Next we got called to get in the car to go back down to the beach so we could measure out a great white shark. We all laid down in the shape of the great white shark and the whole school could fit inside. We had to then make a picture of the beach. David, Adrian and I made a boat with a man on board and we put some old seaweed inside the boat for some colour. We were the winners so after that we got 10 minutes of free time and I went down by the water. Eventually it was time to go home. By Cameron Cameron, David and I were in a group and made a pirate ship, we coloured it in with seaweed. WE WON! After that we went home. I had a good day. Adrian

3 The children are learning about being earth smart, by making their own food wraps using a cotton cloth, bees wax, jojoba oil and tree resin. By making our own food wrap covers we are eliminating the need to use plastic cling wrap. Therefore protecting our environment. How to make Beeswax wraps YOU NEED: 100g Beeswax 20g tree resin 3 teaspoons of Jojoba oil 6 squares of light woven cotton 30cmx30cm An old pot, old clean paint brush Tinfoil, mortar and pestle or some way of crushing the resin METHOD: Chop up beeswax into chunks and place in an old pot. Crush the resin in a mortar and pestle and add to the beeswax. Melt over a medium heat stir intermittently until all melted together. Add Jojoba oil and stir well. Turn your oven to 100C to pre warm. Cut frabic to size. Line your bench with tinfoil and lay fabric on top of it. With your paint brush, paint one side of fabric with wax mixture. Place the tinfoil and fabric onto a tray and pop in the oven for 5 mins

4 What we are learning We are developing our practical knowledge, observation skills and imagination based on our response to artwork by Robert Delaunay. We are also learning to appreciate different types of art work. How will we do this We will see examples of work by Robert Delaunay. We will produce our own piece of artwork based on his work. We need to know What types of colours he used. How he uses shapes in his work Robert Delaunay Robert Delaunay was a French artist He was a famous painter. He progressed through different stages such as Cubism and Orphism. Our pictures are based on his Orphism period and show discs that give the impression of movement Pablo Picasso Pablo Picasso was born in Spain but lived mainly in France. He was a famous painter and sculptor and even became interested in ceramics. He progressed through different stages such as his Blue and Rose periods, and Cubism.
