1 Unit 5: Henri Matisse, Icarus Grade: 3rd Time: 1hr. PREPARE ART PIECE: Henri Matisse, Icarus (1947) MATERIALS NEEDED: Paper scraps (primarily red, yellow, and black) Blue Construction paper Glue Sticks Scissors OBJECTIVE: To understand color and composition from an arrangement of color paper cut outs without a definitive sketch or drawing. VOCABULARY: Collage a piece of art made by sticking different materials together such as photographs, pieces of paper or fabric. Contrast an arrangement of opposite things or calor. This is so the artist can create visual interest and drama. Silhouette cast or show (someone or something) as a dark shape and outline against a lighter background. Primary Colors Red, Yellow and Blue colors. SETUP: Set up the teacher s computer to show the class, Unit 5 powerpoint presentation. Cut red construction paper into small squares, about 1"X1", Cut 9 x12 blue, black and yellow construction paper. You can include various other colored scraps as well (used for students to make their own ending to the story. Place all the scraps in a container big enough to hold the scraps. 1 per table group should be enough. Just remind the students that they are sharing. TEACH ENGAGE: Show the students Unit 4 powerpoint presentation. Tell them the story of Icurus and his father Daedalus:
2 Icarus and his father Daedalus the famous Greek architect and inventor, were invited by King Minos of Crete to prepare a prison for the son of Minos' wife. Daedalus delivered the Labyrinth (a complicated irregular network of passages and secret chambers) that even Daedalus could not escape from. King Minos feared that Daedalus could reveal his secret and instead of letting them free kept them under his surveillance and custody. Daedalus prepared two pairs of wings for their escape consisted of bird's feathers and wax. He instructed Icarus to avoid flying too close to the sun, because his wings would melt, or too close to the sea for fear of drowning. Unfortunately Icarus did not fly as instructed, and when he was too close to the sun he lost the feathers of his wings. As a result he fell down to the sea near by an island that bears his name ever since. The island's name is Icaria and the sea is called Icarian sea. EXPLORE: Possible questions to ask the class: Do you think the blue is the sky or the ocean? The arms and shoulders are curved like wings, but he doesn t seem to be flying. What do you think he s doing? What are the bright yellow shapes? Stars or feathers? What is the tiny red oval? ABOUT THE ARTIST: Henri Matisse was born in France in 1869 His parents owned a general store and his Dad wanted Henri to be a lawyer. When he was a boy, Henri didn t make very much artwork but liked to paint dishes and make hats. When Henri was 22, he became a lawyer but found it boring. Later, he had appendicitis and while he was bedridden for a whole year, his mother gave him a paint set. It changed his life from that day forward. He gave up being a lawyer and decided to be an artist. Matisse went to art school but didn t like the realistic way he was being taught to paint. He wanted to use bolder, brighter colors and be more expressive. Matisse liked to collect pieces of patterned fabric when he traveled. He would then look at the fabric while he painted. Eventually, Matisse s art became famous for its bright colors and vivid patterns. He was good friends with Pablo Picasso.
3 Picasso was jealous of Matisse's fame and they were very competitive with each other. When he became too old to paint, he switched to making brightly colored cutouts with scissors. CREATE Hand out blue 9 x12 construction paper to the students. Have them write their name on the back. Students will create cut paper pictures in the style of Henri Matisse. They will make their own version of Icarus. This is an instructor led project, have the class follow along. Its best to use the teachers overhead if possible. Step 1: Give each child one piece each of 8.5x11 blue and black paper, one of the half pieces of yellow, and one square of red. Step 2: Demonstrate cutting in one connected line around the shape of a body. Step 3: Demonstrate cutting a star freehand and allow students about 6 stars. Tip: show students how to cut a circle and then cut star points around it.
4 Step: 4 Demonstrate cutting either a circle or heart from red paper. Step 5: Pass out glue sticks if the students don t already have them in their desks. Have them glue on their pieces. If they wish to cut out more pieces and change the story a bit they can do so. Maybe Icarus fell into a tree or landed on a mountain top. Encourage students to make their own ending to the story.
