Unit Art Auction Students made individual works of art that combine to make a collaborative piece, and focus on different artistic techniques or styles of artists to fundraise for the day school art auction. VA.B.1.2.2: The student understands what makes different art media, techniques, and processes effective or ineffective in communicating various ideas. VA.E.1.2.1: The student understands the influence of artists on the quality of everyday life. The student will be able to: Collaborate with each other to complete a handmade piece of art Delicious Linoleum Prints The fifth grade explored the art of print making. Each student was encouraged to pick a favorite fruit or vegetable and draft them in their sketchbooks. A final draft was picked and the students transferred their drawings to linoleum blocks. The fifth graders meticulously carved their delectable designs in linoleum. They made several prints using various inks on colored paper to come up with the best color combinations. After much practice and dedication, these are the results of their tasty prints!

8 2011- The Keys to Your Heart Canvas Linoleum Print This project is the culmination of the print making process studied in the art room. Each year, students learn a different technique for print making, ending with the most in-depth, linoleum carving. Students made still-life drawings of various types of vintage keys that were then transferred to linoleum. Through a meticulous process, students carved their keys exploring various techniques. The fifth graders then made multiple prints of their keys, including this beautiful heart, which represents their love. The heart is outlined with each fifth grader s name. The artists graciously donated their carved linoleum to embellish the border of this beautiful piece South Florida Native Leaf Study Linoleum Print Sculpture This project is the culmination of the print making process studied in the art room. Each year, students learn a different technique for print making, ending with the most in-depth, linoleum carving. This year, students combined art and science with a study of trees native to South Florida. Students then made still-life drawings of leaves. Through a meticulous process, students carved their leaves exploring various techniques. The fifth graders then made multiple prints of their leaves, including these earth-toned prints on wood. This unique sculpture exemplifies the fortitude and variety of our wonderful graduating class of Hope is the Thing with Feathers, Feather Study Linoleum prints This piece is a reflection of the drawing and print making units studied by our fifth graders. The students began this piece by making several still-life drawings of feathers from various bird species. They then stylized their drawings and transferred them to linoleum. Through a meticulous process, each student carved out their linoleum feather and made multiple prints on a variety of mediums. The artists graciously donated their carved linoleum to embellish the heart of this beautiful piece. The linoleum feathers are displayed above a decoupaged background, and the decorative corners are adorned with the prints made from the linoleum Wood Grain Linoleum Study The fifth graders have been exposed to the artworks of contemporary artists such as Bryan Nash Gill. Gill explored the beautiful natural designs in the cross section of trees. He created an entire body of work exploring the tree rings from numerous types of trees and how the wood reacts to different changes in climate. Our students replicated his artwork by carving various types of wood grain into linoleum. This project is the culmination of the print making process studied in the art room. Each year, students learn a different technique for print making, ending with the most in-depth, linoleum carving. Students made drawings of wood grain in their sketchbooks and then transferred these illustrations to the linoleum. Through a meticulous process, students carved their designs exploring various techniques. The fifth graders then made multiple

9 prints of their designs, and what you see is the result of these natural, yet sophisticated renditions All You Need is Love Our talented fifth graders began their advanced print making unit by studying the works of Robert Indiana. His famous LOVE sculpture has been recreated over and over again in various mediums, and we decided to try it using linoleum. In groups of four, students were assigned a letter from the word LOVE in English, Hebrew, or Spanish. Then, each student carved a letter from linoleum using various patterns as design. Students collaborated to share their design ideas before making them come to fruition. In their groups, students then printed as many times as they could. It was a marvel to watch the teamwork that occurred during this process. In an attempt to create a likeness of the contemporary Indiana metal sculpture, the final print was made on galvanized steel. The result is quite beautiful and sophisticated like our fifth graders. 2016/17 - South Florida Beach Sunset Fifth graders created energetic hand painted papers in a wide variety of colors as part of the creation of this decoupage collage. Students learned about the work of children s illustrator Eric Carle and Leo Lionni, both of whom revolutionized children s illustrations in the mid twentieth century. Eric Carle s art work is created in collage technique, using hand-painted papers, which he cuts and layers to form bright and cheerful images. Leo Lionni was the first children s illustrator to use the technique of collage, and he used earth tones in his illustrations that are close to the actual colors of the objects found in nature. Enjoy this colorful student piece which represents a beautiful South Florida sunset! 2017/18 - Intersecting Shapes, Intersecting Lives Gradation, intersection, overlapping, warm colors, and cool colors are but a few of the art concepts fifth grade students covered in the creation of this oil pastel collaborative work. Oil pastel (also called wax oil crayon) is a painting and drawing medium with characteristics similar to pastels and wax crayons. In 1947, Pablo Picasso, who for many years had been unable to procure oil pastels because of the war conditions, convinced Henri Sennelier, a French manufacturer who specialized in high quality art products, to develop a fine arts version. In 1949, Sennelier produced the first oil pastels intended for professionals and experienced artists. Students enjoyed the creative blending process they used to make this vibrant creation.
