1 810 Palace Avenue Project Summary: Spanning a child s first classroom experience all the way through middle school, Linwood Monroe s Plus lays a foundation for creativity and exploration in the arts. Accelerated classes, leadership experiences, athletics and after-school programs support young adults as they step into new responsibilities and challenging academics. Our artist-in-residence programs enlist diverse voices and talents; students may learn flamenco dancing, Taiko drumming, poetry and more. The Monroe building was originally constructed in 1926 at 44,011 square feet. Later additions were completed in 1939, 1965, 1972, 1996, and It is now 147,532 square feet. Linwood Upper also is a DCD magnet school where many children with developmental and cognitive delays have support and special education classes. One of the main considerations at Linwood Upper is improving circulation and accessibility, as the most frequently used existing stair is cramped, the existing elevator is remote, and the existing gym spaces are either awkwardly accessible or not accessible respectively. Reconfigured circulation will also improve wayfinding, which is difficult at present. Other important considerations include the reorganization of classes both within the building and between the two Linwood campuses in order to consolidate grade levels and give each grade more appropriate classroom spaces. ECFE, Pre-K, and 4th Grade classes will be moved to Linwood Lower, and remaining grades will have more equitably sized spaces including new breakout spaces. By placing creative program around the Atrium and relocating classrooms that are currently easily disrupted by Atrium noise, the Atrium space can become a new Creative Core for the school. Interventions at the Large Gym will allow this space to function for both athletic and artistic/gathering functions. ew prominent and attractive display space for student work will also reinforce the school s artistic identity. Other considerations include improved space, light, and security at the entry and a better configuration for administrative spaces. Showcase School s Identity General otes: Existing utilization shown is for School Year The Conceptual Utilization Plans are exploratory rather than actual construction plans and represent the design at one moment in time, which will change as the design and funding process progress. The Conceptual Plans are included as a way to organize scopes of work into logical, efficient and meaningful projects. There is no prioritization implied in a work scope title (e.g. Work Scope A is not necessarily the most critical work to be done). The plans in this document are not comprehensive of the entire building s needs as maintenance and replacement of existing building systems such as roofs and mechanical systems are omitted to maintain graphic clarity of the overall vision generated during the Facilities Master Plan Process. Formal zoning reviews have not been undertaken for the proposed work shown in these plans. A review with zoning and building code authorities will occur once the funding is secured.
