1 Project Summary: Adams Spanish Immersion is an international education without the travel expense. Our school is a place where families and staff value the opportunities gained from learning a second language. K-1 students learn basic subjects math, reading, language arts, science and social studies all in Spanish. This core curriculum is enhanced by art, music, technology and physical education. It was originally constructed in 1923 at 29,207 square feet. Later additions were completed in 1973, 1999 and It is now 57,718 square feet in size. A popular program at SPPS, Adams has long since outgrown its school building. There are currently two portable classrooms on site which the Master Plan aims to remove first and foremost. Additionally, a highly inefficient system of circulation, inconveniently located restrooms and over-programmed community spaces prove to compound the density problem within the school. Via the proposed Master Plan, the bottlenecks are greatly relieved with a few key areas of remodeling and additions. Learning spaces are reorganized to take advantage of existing inefficiently used real estate by providing a new 3-story classroom wing to replace an inefficient 1-story addition, and reorienting classrooms towards natural light and with acoustic separations in mind. A new cafeteria and re-organized kitchen also open up the gymnasium for its intended use and school community gatherings. Additionally, the proposed plan reorganizes corridors, restrooms, loading and service areas to allow the site to run efficiently and effectively for the popular program. Issues Identified By School Community in 2015 Adams Spanish Immersion 615 Chatsworth Street South 1. Remove portable classrooms on site (No plumbing, disconnect from school) 2. Separate Gym/Cafeteria (Currently split with acoustic divider, unable to accommodate lunch capacity, cleanliness difficult) 3. Large motor space needed. 4. Bathrooms (Girls and boys opposite one another makes supervision difficult, not enough provided) 5. Natural light (in-board classrooms without natural light) 6. Flexible learning spaces (not enough provided, existing spaces off corridor are not used due to noise from cafeteria) 7. Classroom sizes (Undersized) 8. Assembly area (Need stage, place for all-school presentations) 9. More storage needed. 10. Administrative area too small. 11. Parent pick-up/buses (Currently occur in same location causing conflict/safety concerns) 12. Secure entry needed. 13. Speakers and teach microphone (Currently not built into classrooms) General Notes: Existing utilization shown is for School Year Grade Levels: PreK-5 SY 2014/15 Enrollment: 714 Design Enrollment: 735 The Conceptual Utilization Plans are exploratory rather than actual construction plans and represent the design at one moment in time, which will change as the design and funding process progress. The Conceptual Plans are included as a way to organize scopes of work into logical, efficient and meaningful projects. There is no prioritization implied in a work scope title (e.g. Work Scope A is not necessarily the most critical work to be done). The plans in this document are not comprehensive of the entire building s needs as maintenance and replacement of existing building systems such as roofs and mechanical systems are omitted to maintain graphic clarity of the overall vision generated during the Facilities Master Plan Process. Formal zoning reviews have not been undertaken for the proposed work shown in these plans. A review with zoning and building code authorities will occur once the funding is secured. 1
