1 Delaware Valley Scale Modelers / chapter ipms usa Newsletter November 2016 The Winners Circle Doo-Wop Duck Cover! & What portrays the theme doo wop better than a drive-in/drive-through restaurant in the late 50 s and early 60 s with hamburgers, hot dogs and pizza, with real curb service and real car hops. I remember clearly going to several local drive-in restaurants in my home town in North Carolina in this time frame. Guys and gals would gather there on Friday and Saturday nights to show off their hot cars while grabbing a bite to eat while socializing. Remember, these were the days before cell phones so socializing faceto-face was the only way to do it away from your land lines. I remember one drive-in had an on-sight DJ taking requests and playing the tunes over the radio and through the audio system at the restaurant. He spun the records from what was called The Melody Tower. Sometimes we would cruise through numerous times the same night hoping someone would notice our cool car. My dad bought a brand new 64 GTO convertible when I was a senior in high school and you better believe I did some serious cruising with that car. He 1 Photo by paul tomczak David Anderson shares the inspiration behind his theme-winning Andy s Drive-In display sold it to me for $ in 1974 and I drove it to New Jersey, but that s another story for another club theme. My first car was a 50 Ford coupe with a 53 Mercury flat head V8, another very cruisable car. I remember seeing my first 65 Mustang fastback while it was being cruised. For my display, I had procured the 1/25 scale Andy s Drive-In diorama several years ago along with the figures. The cars I had on display were the 1959 Chevy convertible and three 1932 Ford hot rods. The Chevy is a next meeting November 4 Theme Contest New & Improved Monogram kit painted candy-apple red using Testor s paint. The 32 Ford tudor sedan is box stock by Revell, painted Tamiya bright orange. One 32 Ford is a 3-window coupe with a Jimmy Flintsone resin body sitting on a Revel frame, painted Tamiya bright red. The other 32 Ford is a 5-window high boy by Revell painted Tamiya light blue metallic. n Visit the DVSM website:
2 President s Corner by Paul Tomczak Hello again and Happy November! I can t believe I am saying that. Is the year almost over already? Seems like this year went by quick. Here s hoping you and your family have a great Turkey day this month and you find some great deals on models on Black Friday. Looking forward to going to Maraudercon in November as I have only been to one other model contest this year The MFCA s here in PA. I have been travelling a lot for work and that project is due to end this year and, hopefully, ending most of my travel. In theory, that equals more time for model contests but I guess we will see I have finally broken down and unpacked my essential model supplies. I have now experienced almost a month delay in the start of my basement remodel project and need to at least complete my Shelf of Doom model. This will be some old school model building as my work area is now cleared out. I have a small spot set aside in my office to build and plan to paint in my garage. It may not be my best work, but my model will be on the table in December. Speaking of Shelf of Doom, don t forget to have your model ready for review during our Annual Holiday Party on December 2nd. I have seen quite a few completed kits over the past few months so it looks like it will be a full table in December. If you haven t already, you better warm up those air brushes and get painting. You have less than 30 days to finish or that model goes back onto the Shelf of Doom for next year! Don t forget this month s theme requires two models New and Improved - one being an improved, successor variant of the other. For example, a P-51C and P-51D; 1948 Ford and 1949 Ford; B-24D and B-24J; Successive Sherman tank variants. For cars, they must be close successors, i.e., a 1948 and 1964 Fords do not qualify. Looking forward to full theme table this month.
