1 Delaware Valley Scale Modelers / chapter ipms usa Newsletter April 2017 Delta Wings & Giant Fins The Winners Circle March 2017 Theme Contest Winner: Convair F-106A Delta Dart by Marty Blum Marty s contest-winning model of the Convair F-106A Delta Dart in 1/48 scale is based Revell kit #5847, which was originally released by Monogram. Testors Model Master enamels were applied with a Badger 200. Tenax and Krazy Glue were used throughout the assembly process. The markings were supplied with the next meeting kit and depict an aircraft piloted by Captain April 7 B.B. Patterson serving Theme Contest... with the 456th fighter Wild Thing! all-weather interceptor squadron at Castle Air Force Base California in Marty used both Micro Set and Micro Sol to apply the decals. Marty said, The kit was not on my must have list but Michael s crafts had it on their discount rack for $1.98, so why not. Great instructions and a straight forward build. n Visit the DVSM website: 1 Photos by Paul Tomczak

2 President s Corner by Paul Tomczak Can you smell it? Spring flowers? April Showers? Nope, I am talking about the Spring model shows. Smells like gel super glue, emergency repairs and paint thinner. Maybe even smells like at least a bronze medal?! As a write this I am getting my models packed up for MosquitoCon which is coming up in just another week. I am looking forward to hitting the vendors and filling out some missing areas in my paint stash. As I put the date on the family calendar my wife asked if I would be gone the whole day. My answer was Yes, Yes indeed, I will be gone the whole day. And I will probably need Sunday to recover! My basement remodel is getting close to completion. My modeling room has walls, electricity, additional lighting, and plugs at desktop height of my work desk. My filtered exhaust fan is on back order but is expected to be in next week. Flooring is scheduled to be put in in two weeks so I can actually start working on my layout now. My request for a German Armor Camouflage paint theme was denied by the wife. However, the current color of Pebbly Sandstone will only be referred to as RLM 79 German Desert Yellow by anyone who asks. Once my airbrush is unpacked I can add some RLM 80 Green mottling on the walls when she is not looking This has been my longest building pause since high school / college days. I am a bit antsy to get back into it. So much so I actually bought one of the Revel Snap tight Star Wars kits so I could at least build something. I was pleasantly surprised both at the fit and finish of these kits. I built Poe s special X-wing variant used in The Force Awakens movie. The kit comes pre-painted or molded in several colors so I did not need to paint I just worked on weathering and detailing the cockpit and panels. You could put the whole kit together in about 15 minutes but I spent a weekend on mine with the detail painting. The kit also comes with a sound module you can press BB* s head for laser fire and engine sounds. Perfect for mock strafing runs on my model desk. Just a friendly reminder to the club members. If you have not already paid your annual dues, please see Joe during our April meeting. We rely on the dues payments to keep the lights on literally. They go towards paying the rent for our monthly meetings, keeping the web site up & running and sponsoring awards at model shows. We also have some unused Artisan memberships if anyone is interested. The club pays for 10 of them but it helps defray the cost to our reserves if you can pitch in for the $13 membership. Again, see Joe in our April meeting. Our April theme is Wild Thing which is any model, any subject with a wild paint scheme. So, anything like a Tiger Meet aircraft, non-standard camouflage, dazzle camouflage on ships, Korean War Tiger armor, custom cars will do. Looking forward to a colorful theme table in April. See you then. Happy Modeling! n Theme Contests 2017 January Big & Small Winner: USS Kearsarge by Howard Rifkin February What If? 6 Old Dominion Open Richmond Raceway Complex Richmond, VA February 25, 2017 by Mike Turco Registration Desk, Models, Vendors, Snack Bar, all in one large building The IPMS Richmond model club held the Old Dominion Open again this year at the Richmond Raceway and it was a rousing success. They tallied 626 models by 154 entrants. Chazz Klanian, one of the club officers, reported that 667 walk-in visitors, while over 43 vendors on 107 tables packed it in at the rear of the building. Complete contest results should be published soon at the IPMS Richmond website. I was not going to attend this year but Bobby Cicconi was, so I decided to tag along with him and bring a few models. I m glad I did. It was a great show, I helped judge the dioramas and vignettes categories, and we both won awards. (Above) HMS Valiant 1st Place, Surface Powered Ships (Below) IJN Japanese Submarine 1st Place Subs Bob won firsts for his HMS Valiant in the Surface Powered Ships category and his IJN Japanese submarine in the Subs category. I won firsts in the Automotive Closed- Wheel Competition category (Above) 1977 Lotus JPS Mk. III 1st Place, Large with the Scale Auto. (Below) USN Convoy Fighter 1927 Concepts - 1st Place, Collections. Bugatti 35B, Automotive Large-Scale for the 1977 Lotus JPS Mk. III F1 Car, Motorcycles with the Honda CB1100R, and Collections for my USN Convoy Fighter Concepts. Also got a couple 3rds for my 1934 Duesenberg SJ Phaeton in the Automotive Stock category, and Bell RoBo Rocket Bomber concept in the Real Spacecraft category. This was one time when listening to Bobby C. was a good idea! n 6

7 Remote Model Building Session at Millennium Hobbies by Tony Wootson A small group of us have been gathering periodically at various locations for some remote modeling. About a month ago Brad, Steve Marciante, Tim Lingle and I met up at Millennium Hobbies on a Saturday, for a building session. We went from around noon or 12:30, until closing. Irad (the store s owner) had different anime playing in the background on his wide-screen TV, and the atmosphere was a casual, festive one. Three or four hours in Tim and I went over for a couple slices at the pizza place next door. We even had the chance to intermingle and share what we were doing with some customers, who dropped in the store. From the consensus, a good time was had by all who participated. I m looking to schedule another event at Millennium sometime on one of the upcoming Saturday, (April 8, 15 or 22). The store is located at: 1031 Little Gloucester Rd Suite 3, Blackwood, NJ 08012, and the time would be flexible, anytime beginning after 10 am, when they open, and lasting until 8 pm, when they close. If interested, send me an message, specifying your Saturday preference. twoot@comcast.net.
