There was plenty of variety to be had within the theme, from a big B-58 Hustler, a classic black and gold John Player GP car, to a diminutive 1/700 HMS Astute sub. It was tough to choose a favorite among the great builds, but in the end John Loftus s clean build of the Monogram 1/72 North American X-15 was the overall favorite. John s model depicted the second X-15 (serial 66671) built of three. After 31 flights this aircraft was rebuilt after a landing accident. The plane was renamed the X-15A-2, and took flight for the first time on 28 June It reached its maximum speed of 4,520 miles per hour (7,274 km/h) in October 1967 with pilot William Pete Knight of the U.S. Air Force in control. n Visit the DVSM website: 1

2 Presidents Corner by Rich Turner I am sure I have this conversation each year when seeing the calendar and realising that it s August already. I never can quite believe where the time and years go. I had a list of projects to complete this year and I guess like most of us the list remains an aspiration rather than reality. One of my challenges for this year was to try modelling water in the form of either a ship model or a downed aircraft. Having tried many different ways of producing water that provides translucency, effect of depth and realistic colour I have to say I m not here yet. I ve played with many of the commercially available water effects, resins and liquids available on top of crinkled foil, shaped foam, plexiglass etc but still not happy. Have any club members had any success with this this? Let me know. What I m trying to achieve is the effect of say a sunken object such as a wing that is visible from the surface with the colour changes of depth etc etc. I need a base with a depth of about 3 inches. I have an early announcement of a new event that we will be running in conjunction with AAA Hobbies. We have been given access to the work room at the back of the AAA store to hold a modelling/open day for the club. This has been provisionally booked for the last Saturday in September and will be an opportunity to not only model but also promote the club, talk to shop visitors and so on. There is plenty of room so come along and bring models to work on. I will be asking for helpers, demonstrators etc so please put the date in your diaries and I will forward more information as planning progresses. In conjunction with the above a few folks have mentioned to me about bringing models to work on during friday club nights. I think this is definitely something I next meeting August 3 Theme Contest Weather Related would encourage and common for other clubs that I have attended so if you feel like working on a project please do, we can reserve a table or two for this. Last month I asked again about what workshops folks wanted so if you have any requests please bring them this coming Friday and if you have any newsletter articles please keep them coming. This year we will be having an extra club build to honor December 7th. Pearl Harbor Day. Any model of any vehicle, aircraft, car, truck, armor, boat or ship that would have been present at Pearl Harbor or used by the Japanese to attack Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 is eligible to be entered. I think this leaves out the sci-fi modelers, but if you have a photo to go with your space craft proving it was around on December 7th, we ll take it! Judging is easy it will be the voted on by our party goers. So remember, bring your family and cast your vote at the Holiday party for the best Pearl Harbor build. 3
