1 Wings and Wheels Model Club Sept. Oct. Nov Edition Wings & Wheels Model Club Meeting September 2015 Nineteen members attended a hot and humid September meeting. A new arrangement of seats and tables worked well. It seemed to better focus attention on the speakers and reduce side conversations. We began with a presentation by Belchertown historian and teacher Mark Horan, who discussed various myths and little known facts about slavery and the American Civil War. It seemed that everyone found the talk interesting and very well done. to resume his car modeling after a long hiatus; and Rich Stuart, a relatively new modeler with a keen interest in armor, who brought several of his recent 1/35th scale models. We hope that Alan and Rich will be regular attendees at future meetings, and will take advantage of the vast experience in the room to enhance their skills. The membership voted to donate to two non-profit organizations. Both groups seek to preserve the real historical artifacts that serve as the subjects for many of our modeling interests. The New England Air Museum ( is well known to most of our members, and has had a longstanding connection with the Club. We were joined for the evening s festivities by two new members: Alan Rogala is a recent retiree who is looking Several of our numbers are also members of the Artist Preservation Group ( or APG, which as the name suggests, focuses on supporting archival efforts for the benefit of present and future history fans.

2 Members are invited to nominate other worthy recipients to be considered for future gifts or contributions. Those members interested in initiating or renewing IPMS USA memberships should contact President Al LaFleche to take advantage of the subsidy that W&W offers. We were represented at the 2015 IPMS National Convention in Columbus, Ohio by Vice President Jack Maynard, who surmised that a lot a money must have changed hands in the six(!) vendor rooms. After a missed August meeting, and a couple social gatherings, members and guests generated a record setting Show-and-Tell of more than 20 models. It was good to see that the summer months had been used to increase the size of our collections! The busy meeting concluded with a demonstration by Scott Jamieson and Don Johnson of how to construct a landscaped base for airplane models. He reported the lighting was inconsistent, depending whether a given display was under spotlights or chandeliers. Some new products were displayed prior to going on sale to the public. Ship modeling seems to be on an upswing. Best of Show went to a 1/48 scale P47D from Seattle. Changes are being made in the way the Club will distribute its news. Bob Niemiec will remain involved, as his situation allows, but will work with additional contributors on the new presentations across various media. In years past, members benefited from skills demonstrations that were a regular feature of our meetings. We would like to revive this feature for future meetings. Members who want to put on a minute lesson on a favorite technique should contact Al or Don Johnson. Al announced that the October meeting will feature a presentation by Dennis Gamelli, of long time ValleyCon benefactor Pioneer Valley Hobbies, who will speak of his adventures as a hobby shop owner. The techniques used celluclay application with static grass and other groundwork features - will be the subject of a detailed step-by-step that will be posted on the website, with a link to the Facebook page. Our next scheduled meeting will be at the Church at 7pm on Thursday, October 1st.

Wings & Wheels Model Club Meeting October 2015 This month, Dennis Gamelli, owner of Pioneer valley Hobbies will speak to us about the life of a hobby shop owner. Also, as we have been doing, we continue to offer an incentive to join or renew IPMS/USA membership. The national organization has had to raise its dues to $30 a year. If you wish to join or renew, please bring $25 cash or check and we will get your paperwork in. We need a minimum of 5 members to maintain our charter. Photos from the meeting on 1st October The featured speaker was Dennis Gamelli, owner of Pioneer Valley Hobbies, 8 Chestnut Street in West Springfield MA, a big supporter of the club, who spoke on the trials and pleasures of owning a hobby store.
