1 VOLUME 38, NUMBER 10 October 2013 Latest Tailwinds Derek Abramson, Editor I hope everyone had a good Halloween. The weather is cooler and it is finally Fall. There have been a few good days with a bit of the windy ones mixed in. Interestingly, there has been some great activity at the field which included some Rocketry from AVC. There also has been a lot of Pattern Activity at the field as there seems to be a growing group of pattern flyers (Team Tailwinds) making their way through the District 10 ranks. In-Fact, at a recent event in Arvin, Team Tailwinds received the Pattern Animals of the Year award. Jamie Schoolcraft won Sportsman, Mike Whitacre placed 4th in Sportsman while Jim Whitacre placed 8th. Jean Greer placed 7th in Intermediate. Volume 38, Number 10 Robert Fish missed the Advanced Championship by 3 points, placing second. Rounding things out, Tony Frackowiak placed 3rd in F3A. Great job Team Tailwinds!! You may have noticed in the recent MA Magazine there is some information about the TransAmerica Tour We are currently the first stop for the Tour. Right now our flying segment will be from our field to Hesperia. The Tour is still in the planning stages, but when it happens it will be an interesting and historic event to be a part of. More information will follow. Until then, keep those wings level! Page 1

3 Happy Halloween Members President s Message There has been a block of really good weather with light or no wind and temps in the 70 s and 80 s, so I hope most of you have dusted off your planes and enjoyed some flying. October seems to reward us every year with the most days of flying weather for any given month. Thanks to those of you who have dug out projects and planes to show off at the monthly meeting. We have seen a small spike recently and I would like that to continue as it makes the meeting more informational and overall more fun. We have one more monthly meeting on November 7 th before our annual Christmas Party meeting in December, so let s end the year on a big note with a big turnout.. Doug Killebrew Hello AVTI members! Vice-President Message Well, the year has begun to give us some great flying weather. I hope you can all get out and enjoy these nice days with some fun flying. The Pattern competition season has just about ended. There is one remaining contest, which will be our Fall Classic Pattern meet on November 9 th. The District Championships were run on October 26 th and 27 th in Bakersfield. Our group of pattern pilots in the club did very well. In Sportsman Jamie Schoolcraft ended a great season by winning the contest and the title of 2013 Sportsman District Champion. Congratulations to Jamie! Mike Whitacre placed 4 th in the contest and his brother Jim was 7 th. They have been having a great time practicing and attending a lot of contests this year. Unfortunately Don Fox was ill and could not attend. I m sure he would have done well if he could have made it. In Intermediate Jean Greear has gotten back in to the contests and is working hard to improve. It s a big jump going from Sportsman to Intermediate! In Advanced we had Robert Fish and Mike Greear. Robert had a real battle and he flew some great flights. After the dust settled he missed winning buy just 3 points, placing a solid second. I know this has him motivated to work even harder for next year! Mike Greear placed 4 th in the contest ending up third for the season. In F3A there wasn t much of a battle. I tried my best and I was pleased with how I flew but the competition is tough and I placed third. At the end of the contest I am pleased to say that our group was honored to receive a Pattern Animal of the Year award! We attended a lot of contests and have promoted pattern well this year. The interest has started to grow. If you re thinking you d like to give it a try just let any of us know and we d be happy to give you a hand! Hope to see you at the events and at the field! 6 The AVC Rocket Club After a Great Launch Day Barkley s Safety Tip November 4, 2013 Hey guys! It has been great getting out to the field lately. It s been cooler which is nice for me! Some of those hot days make it tough when you re covered in black fur! It also seems like we re getting more of those pesky ravens! They seem to get in to everything. So please put all the trash in the cans and use the lids to cover it up. Also, we need to occasionally empty those cans. When they get full those dang birds love to get at the stuff! 7 AVTI Meeting Excitement What a great showing at our meeting, starting with the Tony Frackowiak, (Top Right). Tony brought his 3M Mistique while Derek Abramson (Top Left) Brought a Stinson Voyager. Michael Whitacre (Middle Right) brought a Prolog he just purchased. Bob Childress forgot this was a model airplane club, so he brought his work in progress, a scale Tug Boat (Middle Left). The Tug is a Dumas Kit. Although still being completed, the attention to detail is amazing. Our President, Doug Killebrew brought several airplanes in, one is this classic Escape (Bottom Right). Michael Cruz, an AVTI Designer of sorts brought a Decathlon that was given to him by Ernie. Volume 38, Number 10 Page 7

9 For Sale I will be selling everything I have accumulated over the last 8 years. The garage sale will be Nov 29/30.
