AMA Charter Schiller Woods Flying Field Monthly Newsletter November 2013 The November 2013 meeting of the Radio Signal Modelers Flying Club was called to order at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, November 11th by President Les Schier. There were approximately 15 members in attendance. President Les welcomed new member Gerald Hawk to the meeting. The minutes of the October meeting were presented by Secretary Ted Noncek and approved by the members as read. Treasurer s Report Treasurer Terry Gombert presented the Treasurer s Report for November The club began October with $1,695. During the month the club collected $171 from three new members and the sale of a hat, and had $147 in expenditures for the experimental car port. As a result, the club ended the month with $1,719 as of October 31st. The Treasurer s Report was approved by the club. Biplane George Passed Away Don Raasch notified the club that George Kuther, known by many of us as Biplane George passed away in September. Unfortunately his friends from the field were not no- Don Zeller helps Ti Galfi position Ti s new Hobbyking all-fiberglass Texan at the November meeting Show and Tell.

George was a card carrying member of the Geezers Flying Club, the de facto morning fliers crew that takes over the field every weekday morning during the spring and summer months. George was a veteran of the Chicago Police Department and, according to Ti Galfi, kept copious notes many years ago of his flights by plane, and who was at the field with him. George loved to fly biplanes including a.90 sized Goldberg Ultimate that we saw him fly for many years. While George was not a recent member of RSM, he was a long-time member of our Schiller Park Field flying community, and his presence will be missed. George Kuther Passing of Tom Jacobs We were saddened to learn of another death in our Schiller Park Flying Field community in the passing of Tom Jacobs. Tom passed away just after our October meeting. Tom was a great guy and was always willing to lend a hand at club events and during club maintenance days. Tom loved to fly his electric planes early in the morning to take advantage of the peaceful flying just after sunrise. Tom was a gentleman in the truest sense of the term, and we would often see him in the afternoon with a cold McDonald s coffee drink to enjoy while chatting and watching the flying. Tom s soft spoken confidence will be missed in our club and at the field. Field Maintenance Committee Don Zeller presented the Field Maintenance Committee report for November. Don reported that since the last meeting the grass was cut once more, but that the season of cutting was officially over. The fuel tank on the tractor has been filled with stabilizer for the winter, Tom Jacobs and Ti Galfi has offered to take the tractor to his garage and perform other annual maintenance such as blade sharpening and removing the battery to store indoors over the winter season. Once finished, the tractor will be stored for the winter at the shed. Finally,
RSM Monthly Newsletter Page 3 Don reported that he had brought back the propane heater for use at the Chili Fun Fly. Flight Instruction Committee Don Zeller had nothing to report other than the group of pilots trained this year have made great progress and are flying often on their own. Field Safety Committee Ted Noncek, Field Safety Committee Officer, had nothing to report. Planning Committee President Les presented the Planning Committee report for November since Vice President Tim Gombert was recovering from a knee replacement. The club wishes Tim a speedy recovery and Ray Capitulo presentgs his new SAB Goblin helicopters during Show and Tell. hopes his new landing gear holds up we hear he opted for the new retracts from Robart. We can only guess where the air canister is going to be hidden! Close up of Ray s SAB Goblin 630. Les presented the latest news on the Forest Preserve District ( FPD ) field improvements. Both he and Terry Gombert met with FPD representatives shortly before the October meeting. This meeting was very productive in which it was decided that the best course of action is for the FPD to give the club what it wants. Les and Terry were able to set them in the right direction on what is at the top of the club wish list. While not promising anything at this time, the idea of using some of the improvement money for a paved runway is back on the table! Les reported that our ask had been a 400 foot runway, but that the representatives indicated they may be able to make it work if it were 300 feet. Les agreed 300 feet would work for us if it meant the difference between getting a runway or not. Les noted that thankfully, they held this meeting with us before the plans were in stone. Let s all keep a positive attitude that the paved runway may become a reality. This is great news for the club and we all wish to applaud the efforts of Les, Tim, and Terry in putting in a lot of effort in sticking
RSM Monthly Newsletter Page 4 with the project and in creating a positive influence on the FPD representatives. When you think about it, we really are lucky to have this team taking the time to attend meetings on our behalf, and in building relationships with the decision makers in the FPD. This is no small effort on their part! Officer Nominations for 2014 In accordance with our RSM Bylaws, the annual nomination of officers for election in December was held at the November meeting. The current officers including President Les Schier, Vice President Tim Gombert, Treasurer Terry Gombert and Secretary Ted Noncek were nominated. In addition, one new nomination was made of Scott Thompson for the office of President. All members are encouraged to come to the December meeting to vote on the slate of officer candidates. The president race is the only contested election so a paper ballot will be prepared for the election. In addition it was discussed that Tim Gombert had asked Ti Galfi to become a member of the Planning Committee, for which Ti has agreed. Note that all committees are open to club members wishing to make a greater contribution to the future of the club. All members are encouraged to contact any of the officers to indicate interest in committee membership. The standing committees include Planning, Flight Instruction, Maintenance and Safety. We also have the Event Committee which is assembled from time to time to hold events. A permanent Event Committee chairman would be a welcome addition to the club governance team. Scott Thompson at the field this summer. Scott was nominated as a candidate for Club President for Chili Fun Fly Saturday, December 14th This year s 9th Annual Chili Fun Fly will take place on Saturday, December 14th, starting at 10am. This event is one where we all bring our best homemade chili recipes to share with the club. We will have camp stoves set up to warm them up and always have a great time whether there is snow or not. Mark the date for this great end-ofyear fun fly, and watch the weather reports for whether you will need skies or not. Show and Tell First up was Ti Galfi with his all fiberglass Texan from Hobbyking. The aircraft weights
RSM Monthly Newsletter Page 5 about 22 lbs with a Zenoah 45cc for power, and uses 9 servos. It has an 84 inch wingspan and Ti plans to add a smoke system. Sweet looking airplane! Next up was Ray Capitulo showing off his latest additions to his growing fleet of helicopters. Ray presented two SAB Goblin helicopters a 630 and a 500. These are truly works of engineering art when looked at up close. Both are flybarless technology and take some pretty hefty batteries the 630 takes two 6- cell packs, and the 500 uses a single 6-cell pack. Ray is quite the pilot with his helicopters as he related how he performed the maiden flight of the 630 on a recent 30 mph wind day! New member Gerald Hawk next presented his Sig Kadet that he built from a kit. The Kadet is powered by an OS 46AX and had its maiden flight the prior week with the help of Ted Noncek as instructor. With its blue covering, it was hard to see the plane in the air against the blue sky, so Gerald added some yellow to dis- Mike Meitus presents the twin fuselage Blue Max. tinguish the bottom of the wing. Nice build Gerald and welcome to the club. Final Show and Tell was presented by Mike Meitus. Mike brought in a very unusual airplane that was built by a former member, the late Julian Neary. Mike noted that Julian was a regular at the field many years ago and that his son had given Mike the kit bashed duel-fuselage Blue Max to refurbish and get flying again. The plane currently has old Kraft servos, and has two.40 motors for power and was built in the late 1980 s or early 1990 s. Mike indicated that he has asked master builder Don Raasch to work on it and get it modernized and up to flight standards again so that it can once again fly over Schiller Woods Field. Thanks Mike for bringing this unique bird for us to see. By the way, Ti Galfi indicated he recalled seeing it fly over Schiller Field many years ago. Gerald Hawk with his kit built Kadet.
RSM Monthly Newsletter Next Meeting The next meeting will be held on Monday, December 9th at 6:30 p.m. at the Schiller Park Community Center at 4501 N. 25th Ave., Schiller Park.
