The Riverside Robotics Society Jan 2016 Q1 Preview of Events Board of Directors John McCarthy, President Thomas Messerschmidt, Vice President Greg Allen Secretary Hayden McCarthy, Treasurer Dear RRS Members, On behalf of the Riverside Robotics Society Board of Directors, Happy New Year! We concluded our last meeting of 2015 with a fun-filled day that featured virtual reality experience from Google Cardboard and glimpses of popular tools from Christmas, the Sphero robot and a hoverboard. Forrest Thompson, Historian Monthly Programs Join our mailing list at: Riverside-Robotics-Society/ Affiliated Chapter RRS is affiliated with the Robotics Society of Southern California. They meet at Cal State Long Beach: Thank Your Sponsors! The following companies help support Riverside Robotics Society. California Institute of Robotics botcollege Nuts & Volts Magazine Robotis Servo Magazine com/ Other Events m/ All the demonstrations brought smiles to the group. What was especially humorous was watching folks try out the hoverboard. While it did not catch on fire, it was a blast to watch folks attempt to balance themselves and move about the library. 1
The Google Cardboard viewers were limited edition versions of R2 D2 and Storm Trooper produced in time for the movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While the limited edition Star Wars versions are no longer available you can learn more about Google Cardboard at: Officer Elections At the December 2015, we also held our officer elections for the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer roles. Each year we hold elections for these roles and in order to participate in the elections, a member must be in full standing. Following a vote by the members in attendance the following members were unanimously elected: John McCarthy > President Thomas Messerschmidt > Vice President Hayden McCarthy > Treasurer Greg Allen > Secretary 2
As our club continues to grow we are looking for individuals to assist with the following roles. Membership Chair > welcome new members and assist those considering membership Contest Coordinator > help manage the contests and prizes such as robot of the month Public Relations Chair > draft and post press releases; post announcements on social media If you are interested in any of the roles, please contact John McCarthy ( or mobile: ) Year in Review 2015 was an exciting year in robotics and especially for the Riverside Robotics Society. We had fantastic lectures in robotics, 3D printing, learned about programming the Raspberry Pi, held contests in sumo bot and line following, learned how to catch a rat humanely with an Arduino, learned about Assembly Coding, and had a field trip to see how robots are used by the bomb squad. In addition to lectures and events at Riverside Robotics, many members also attended events like the Makerfaires (San Mateo, San Diego and Orange County, DARPA Robotics Challenge and the SoCalMakerCon. I compiled a bunch of pictures from both events at Riverside Robotics Society with these other locations into a year in review pictorial. And since I am a fan of the Talking Heads, I used a couple songs as the audio track. I realize that it is a bit long at 7 minutes but there was a lot to show. Also note that I did not normalize the volume in the 2 nd song so you will need to turn it down J 3
Upcoming Events We certainly did and saw a lot in 2015 and we have even more to share in We are beginning 2016 with a trip to Back in the Future! Martin Sanchez, a member of the Riverside Robotics Society and owner of Martin s Movie Cars will be starting off our 2016 with an outdoor presentation featuring The DeLorean Time Machine and Doctor Browns Step Van! 4
Caveat: Martin has taken great care to ensure these vehicles are movie accurate including the flux capacitor this part of our meeting is subject to weather conditions. Therefore if it is raining unfortunately the vehicles will not be able to appear. At the moment we only have a 10% chance of rain that day, so get your camera or smartphone ready to take some pictures on Saturday. Lecture Series > Jan, Feb & Mar In January we are beginning a lecture series that is open to all members of the Riverside Robotics Society. Long time member and our own eccentric scientist Professor Vannoy will start 3-part series on microcontrollers, programming and sensor strategy. Professor Vannoy has his bachelor of science in Electronic Engineering and a Master in Information Technology. In addition he has been teaching for over 20 years on topics like microcontrollers, electronics, C/C++, python, AC and DC theory, PLCs, and tons more. He is putting together a customize set of classes to cover three areas: 1. Introduction to the Arduino Uno > Jan 2. Programming the Arduino Uno > Feb 3. Sensor Strategies for Line Following & Sumo Bots >Mar Professor Vannoy is preparing a PowerPoint presentation, show videos from his YouTube Channel and will provide handouts. He will also bring a flash drive so those that attend the lectures can have all the documentation. The entire lecture series is free of charge but there will be homework and assignments if you wish to learn more. For the January meeting all you need to have is an Arduino Uno, which is about $25 at SparkFun: ( fun.com/products/1 1021). 5
A laptop will also be handy as if time permits he may touch upon the Arduino IDE. You can download and install free of charge at: While the Woodcrest Library has free internet access, the bandwidth is not good. I highly recommend down loading and installing it at home/office or school. At our January meeting Professor Vannoy will also provide a list of inexpensive parts (e.g. resistors, LEDs) to complete some homework/lab assignments and later IR sensors to detect lines. You can learn more about Professor Vannoy from these links as well as get a jump on the upcoming lecture series (search for Vannoy) March Meeting In March we will also have a presentation from Hansol Hong, CEO of RoboLink: RoboLink operates two learning centers and teaches 15 after schools programs to elementary and middle schools in San Diego. Last year I helped fund a RoboLink Robot Kit on Kickstarter. It teaches building and programming using Arduino without soldering. Recently RoboLink announced a new kickstarter project for a quadcopter that provides step-by-step videos to learn the coding using an Arduino compatible board. 6
Get Ready for our first meeting of the year! At our January meeting we will: ü See The Delorean Time Machine and Doc Brown s Stepvan (weather permitting) ü Begin the first lecture on Arduino Uno ü Buy and bring your Arduino Uno to the meeting ü Download and install the Arduino IDE At this meeting we will also share with you our Q1 schedule for Don t miss this news! Are You Interested in Robotics? If so, Become a Paid Member Whether you are a newbie or an expert, the Riverside Robotics Society is a great club to belong to. We love to share our experiences and technical knowledge. If we don t know something, chances are we can point you in the right direction to secure the answer you need. The Riverside Robotics Society is open to hobbyists and makers of all ages. If you are age 15 and younger, a parent must accompany you to all meetings. While we don t curse, this is for your personal safety. We often use things such as soldering irons and we cannot always protect you from equipment. Our meetings are held at Woodcrest Library in Riverside, California and are open to the public. We generally meet on the 3 rd Saturday of the month, albeit exceptions occur J. Paid Membership is $20 per person and $30 for families per year. This allows you free entry to our all contests including robot of the month club. When you participate in a contest, we give prizes that are commensurate with the contest value. These include prizes like t-shirts, magazine subscriptions, robot parts and electronic equipment. Paid members also receive free training lectures when offered by the chapter and access to special events that are not available to the general public. Register at to receive our communications. Attend an open meeting. If you like what you see, give $20 or 30 to our treasurer and become a member. Yep, it is that easy. 7
