4 First of all, I want to state that I am definitely not an expert when it comes to R/C airplanes, although I have really learned a lot over the past year. I thought I would share a few basic things that I do for each plane when I set it up in my radio that I have learned about over the past several months that may help someone who just recently purchased this radio or is having trouble setting it up with their planes. Next month, I will cover some more advance topics. General: Pick a layout and stick with it. I can t stress this enough. If you start using one switch for one plane and then program a different switch for the same function on another plane, you are just going to get yourself confused. Name your model: Kind of self-explanatory. Make sure to describe your plane with the 8 characters given. Basic Setup: Make sure your servos are moving in the right direction and that you have centered your trims mechanically and in the radio. When setting a plane, I make sure to set the right control deflection with the END POINTS menu in the radio. This is an easy way to control servo travel. You can also get more travel for 3D planes by setting the maximum for each servo up to 140%. This is also a good way to get exact movements for your throttle servo. You can also use SUB TRIM to help adjusting the centering for your servos so you can achieve a perfect trim. Throttle Control: Based on the manual, I believe this is the best way to setup the control for any glow or gas plane for 9 series radio. Switch C is a 3 position toggle switch. I start by mechanically setting the idle on the plane to a high-idle position with a neutral trim setting. Then, I set the UP position of C to this setting (Just make sure that nothing else is programmed to Switch C). If your plane will not start or keep running at this position, adjust the mechanical connection on the airplane until it does Otherwise, you will have problems with the rest of the setup. Then, I start by setting the CENTER setting of C to about 20%. To do this, go into the IDLE-DOWN menu. Make sure SW is set to C and POSI is set to Cntr&Dn. Then select MIX, flip switch C to the center position and change it to ON. Then set the RATE to 20%. Next, set the CENTER & DOWN setting for C to 40% (max). To do this, go into the THR-CUT menu. Make sure SW is set to C and POSI is set to DOWN. Then select MIX, flip switch C to the down position, and change it to ON. Then set the RATE to 40%. Start the engine in the UP position and let the engine warm up. Then, flip the switch to the CENTER. If the engine quits, reduce the percentage. Keep adjusting until you get a nice low idle. Now try DOWN. This should kill the engine. If not, you may need to start again and adjust the mechanical link (your high-idle is probably set too high). You should also check to see if the DOWN position is set too far. Too far will put extra pressure on your throttle linkage/servo. It should be set at the minimal setting. I just start with the max because that is around where I usually get it to work. Once you have it setup, you will have a nice easy method to start your engine, switch to a lower idle setting for sitting on the taxi way, and a way to easily kill your engine. Dual Rates/Exponential: For any sport or 3D plane, this is a must. Exponential will give you smoother or faster control, and dual rates will help you tame down your beast for first flights or for keeping the planes control sensitivity down. A negative value for exponential will reduce the throw in the center and increase the throw at the extreme for the stick position. This will help smooth your inputs to the plane. This is usually done for ELEV/RUDD/AILE. A positive exponential will increase the sensitivity of the stick in the middle. An example of why to do this is on the THRO for 3D planes. Positive EXPO will allow for quicker throttle response for hovering. How I usually setup a plane to start with is to use the switch I designated for dual rates (in my case Switch A). First, put the switch you are going to use in the up position. This is your high-rate. If you already haven t set the extremes for the control surfaces in the END POINTS menu, do so now. Then go to the D/R,EXP menu. Select the channel you are going to set, set SW to A (or whatever switch you are going to use), leave D/R min and max to 100% and set EXP to -60%. You will have to move the stick to get it move to each side. Then move the switch to the down position. The menu will reset the values This is OK, the high rate values are stored automatically. I usually set the low rates (D/R) to 75% with expo of -30% You can adjust as you see fit. Repeat this process for all 4 channels (AILE/ELEV/THRO/ RUDD) Timers: A great way to make sure you don t run out of fuel/batteries is to set at least one of the timers. I usually use Switch B and use the UP position to start the timer. Have it count up from zero to gauge how long your plane can fly, and then set it to count down from that time value.
