1 Delaware Valley Scale Modelers / chapter ipms usa Newsletter December 2018 Our November Rival Theme winner was John Loftus s pair of 1/48 fighters, both cleanly built with subtle weathering, that is John s trademark. More of Paul Tomczak s photos of these fine models can be found on page 9. 2 Presidents Corner by Rich Turner Well it s definitely winter again, crazy weather changes that I thought I d left that behind in the UK, a few more ticks on the list of kits built and purchased and another year of modelling passed. Where does time go? If we all look back at the models we have started, finished, shelved and shared I m sure that between us we will have quite a collection across a range of genres. Over the past few meetings we have started to see more genres open up the cracks between aircraft and cars but I would like to see more armour, ships and diorama s taking to the tables over the coming years. Before we dive into 2019 let s take a brief look back at I don t have the final count of monthly theme contest entries but I believe this is definitely up on last year which is great to see and I think we have had some of our biggest monthly attendances through the year. The introduction in November of the Build Night proved very successful and you said that you would like to see it continue. We held our first modelling day at AAA Hobbies which has done wonders for us in terms of our relationship with our nearest quality hobby store and I am keen that this is repeated and continues. Some of you may recall that we won the spot of IPMS Regional Newsletter but last month this was upgraded with a little photoetch, paint and graphics to IPMS Newsletter of the Year. Well done John Goschke and all those who contribute. There is no escape now and no pressure for 2019! Looking forward to 2019, I want to see the club continue to grow in depth and breadth. As a group we can all help promote the club, increase membership, and improve access, quality and standards of modelling. With this in mind I m going to propose/introduce a few new idea s/challenges, get more folks involved and ask that you all help, contribute and take the challenge. So is the challenge number for the coming year. 19 more monthly theme contest entries 19 more DVSM signed up members 19 more DVSM newsletter articles More diorama s built (maybe not 19) To help achieve these goals we will continue with our current activities but also introduce some new items. The build nights will become part of each monthly meeting as agreed. We will interject workshops/clinics into these build nights as we feel able and encourage certain skill sets to help/demonstrate. I would like to see the club continue to grow with AAA, which will help with providing a larger footprint and outreach. This will benefit both and help with gaining new members, exposure and member benefits. I would like to start displaying our work in the store s lockable display cabinets, which will help promote DVSM along with some promotional material that we will work on for the start of the year. We will work with AAA to hold more events that will compliment club activity. To encourage models in the genres we see less often I m going to introduce a new annual award for 2019, the Presidents Cup, which will be in support of a theme or discipline of the current Presidents choosing. This year being the 75th anniversary of D-DAY and along with our May theme, the Cup will be for a D-Day Diorama and AAA Hobbies have kindly offered to sponsor this. More details to follow. To follow up on the IPMS Newsletter of the Year we are introducing an award for the Best DVSM Newsletter Article of the Year from our membership to be selected by the club officers and awarded in December. Last but not least I would like to welcome Jack Lynch as Vice President to the club officer s team. Jack is a reasonably new member of DVSM but as an active modeller and directly working in the model industry will be a great help with future vision and activities. Remember this month s holiday special meeting, please feel free to bring along some food and/or drink to share. This month s theme is Favourite Five and also Pearl Harbour special interest theme set by Paul last year. See you all Friday. RichT 2

4 MarauderCon 2018 By Mike Turco A few intrepid DVSM members and I traveled down to Havre de Grace, MD and attended the eagerly awaited biennial MarauderCon model show and contest. This year s edition did not disappoint. The Level Volunteer Fire Company hall was loaded with models and modeling enthusiasts. It was reported that 572 models graced the tables, and they were good ones. Aircraft and armor were the most populated categories, but all were well represented. The host clubs, IPMS Baltimore and Washington D.C., did a great job, and the fire company personnel did a fine job supporting the event. This year the hosts made a valiant effort at photographing each of the award-winning models, so they could project a photo of the winner on a large screen as each award announcement was made. This is done at the Nationals and enables visitors and fellow modelers to recognize exactly which model is getting the associated award. Unfortunately, they could not pull this off in the time allotted. The judging ran well past the planned time, primarily due to the number of models entered. I can state unequivocally as a member of a team judging armor and, subsequently, a few aircraft categories, that the judging was quite time consuming. This was necessary to be fair to the entrants, who displayed some great work. Not being able to show the photographs was a shame because a lot of good effort went into the photography and organization of the photos in advance of the award ceremony. I hope that, with the knowledge gained this year, they try this again. It will be very well received if they can pull it off, and as far as I know, will be a first for a local show in our region. Bob Cicconi s USS Arkansas won the Best Ship Award. The DVSM made a good showing and took home quite a few awards (See contest results and more photos on the following page.) These are listed below, the most remarkable being that DVSM members swept the Collections category, taking first, second and third. Congratulations to all DVSM members and especially to the MarauderCon host clubs for a great day. n 4
