1 Delaware Valley Scale Modelers / chapter ipms usa Newsletter July 2017 The Winners Circle 2017 Gold-Silver-Bronze Contest Best-in-Show 1/700 HMS Naiad by Bob Cicconi Photo by Paul Tomczak Bob Cicconi captured the Best-in-Show at DVSM s annual judged contest with his build in 1/700th scale of the HMS Naiad, a Royal Navy light cruiser with a short, eventful career. Like all Bob s ships, Naiad featured the clean, precise workmanship and fine detail that invites close inspection, with nary a flaw to be found. Congratulations, Bob! Here are some details of Naiad s career, courtesy of Wikipedia Naiad was a Dido-class light cruiser of the Royal Navy which served in the next meeting July 7 Theme Contest: Fourth-of-July Second World War. She was built by Hawthorn Leslie and Company (Hebburn-on-Tyne, UK), her keel being laid down on 26 August She was launched on 3 February 1939, and commissioned 24 July Naiad initially joined the Home Fleet and was used for ocean trade protection duties. As part of the 15th Cruiser Squadron she took part in operations against German raiders following the sinking of the armed merchant cruiser Visit the DVSM website: 1 Jervis Bay in November In December and January she escorted convoys to Freetown in Sierra Leone, but at the end of January 1941 was back in northern waters where she briefly sighted the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau south of Iceland as they were about to break out into the Atlantic (Operation Berlin). By May 1941 Naiad was with Force H in the Mediterranean on Malta convoy operations, and flagship of the 15th Cruiser Squadron. Naiad participated in the Crete operations, where she was badly damaged by German aircraft. She subsequently operated against Vichy French forces in Syria, where, together with the cruiser Leander, she engaged the French destroyer Guépard. For the remainder of her service, she was in the Mediterranean, mostly connected with the continual attempts to resupply Malta. HMS Naiad fired on enemy aircraft with her fore turrets during operations in the Mediterranean, March That same month she sailed from Alexandria to attack an Italian cruiser that had been reported damaged. This report was false, and on her return, 11 March 1942, Naiad was sunk by U-565 south of Crete. 77 of her ship s company were lost. n

2 President s Corner by Paul Tomczak Wishing everyone a belated but Happy 4th of July! I hope you got to enjoy some good BBQ, some good friends and some good fireworks. I know I enjoyed my extended weekend as I was able to take Monday off as well. We had a nice turnout for our Gold-Silver-Bronze contest in June. Thanks to our judges for helping out at short notice and thanks to everyone for participating. Without our usual themes in place it was great to see the variety in the builds submitted. With my modeling room finally up and running, it is now time for me to put in my shelving for my built collection. I counted when I pulled down my shelves from my old model space. I had 285 built models on the shelves. That did not include the 30 or so models that had migrated up to our den over time due to lack of space on the shelves. I got a few extra shelves to put up since I have more wall space now. However, I do finally have to retire some of my builds. Since I build models per year I want to have room as I build. I am not looking forward to this. Check out my picture showing the models (some double stacked) across the top of my den book cases. Yikes. Our theme is Fourth of July or Red, White & Blue. Your model must have all three colors, and be mostly red, white and blue. Something like an American flag on an olive green airplane doesn t qualify. I have got to admit this was a tough one for me. As I primarily build aircraft, I had to dig deep in the stash to find something for this build. I am happy to say the final parts went on this build 2 weeks ago so I am ready to go. See you all on July 7th. Happy Modeling! n Theme Contests 2017 January Big & Small Winner: USS Kearsarge by Howard Rifkin February What If? 7 Wonderfest 2017 Show Report By Tony Wootson Wonderfest 2017 is now a distant, fond, fuzzy memory. It took place back during the weekend of June 2, 3 and 4, and was once again held at the Crowne Plaza Louisville Airport Hotel, in Louisville, Kentucky. This was the fourteenth time I ve attended Wonderfest, along with this being the eleventh report I ve written on this Wonderful event. Just as was the case with all previous thirteen, this Wonderfest Show was a very enjoyable affair! I drove the just over 700 miles there. I had taken off the Thursday and Friday prior to the show, along with the Monday afterwards from school to attend. Site of Wonderfest: Crowne Plaza Louisville Airport Hotel, Thursday & Friday After driving straight through Thursday night into Friday morning I finally arrived (at a bit after 7 am). I promptly checked into the Rodeway Inn, (where I had made reservations for the weekend). This has been my home-away-from-home for most of the previous W-Fest shows I ve attended. It s located just down the road from the Crowne Plaza, and the rate is cheaper than the Crowne. (I justify my hotel choice by telling myself that I can use the money saved to treat myself to an additional model, or two, or three, or???). After grabbing only around five hours of sleep I was up. Later, my partner-in-crime, Jay Chladek, for the weekend showed up. Jay s from Omaha, Nebraska, and also makes the W-fest trek by car. Jay has been a regular at Wonderfest going waay back, (before my own first show in 2001). I originally met Jay at that particular Wonderfest Show, after previously stumbling upon his Science Fiction website and sharing some messages. I ve been sharing a room with Jay for quite some Jay Chladek s Rebel Shuttle time now. We decided to go out to a local Pizzeria eatery, Hometown Pizza, to grab a bite to eat, followed by dropping by the Crowne Plaza, to purchase our weekend show passes, avoiding the long line which is a norm there. After hanging out at several of the suites set up by show attendees, the Resin Illuminati and UGH! Models, I decided to call it quits for the evening. Several things I like about this show are the numerous, after-hour activities which take place. You can drop by a number of suites after the show officially ends for the day and just shoot-the-stuff with fellow modelers. It doesn t make any difference if you re a newbee and you re dropping by for Paul Keefe s TACC Contest Entry 7

8 the very first time. There s a really friendly vibe going on at the show during the entire weekend. CultTVMan, aka Steve Iverson, along with Resin Illuminati host informal after-hours get togethers at their suites. This year, added to the mix was a group of guys who have formed a brand-spanking-new modeling company, UGH! Models. After making the rounds, I decided to head back over to my hotel room. Jay was there, and we chatted for a bit, catching up on things and sharing what each of us had brought for the show. A bit before one am we finally decided to call it quits, and crashed for the nigh uhhh, morning. Ghost in the Shell Diorama Contest Entry Saturday Morning s Show Bright-n-early at 7:30 am I was up. Since I had some time to kill before the official start of the show (at 10:00, when the vendor rooms opened) I decided to squeeze in a quick morning walk, followed by getting some cereal, milk and fresh fruit at Rodeway s Continental breakfast. Arriving back at the room I took a quick shower and headed over to the show. I had brought with me three pieces for the contest which I had obtained, (begged, borrowed, bought and inherited, from a couple modeling buddies. I had two of Paul Keefe s pieces, his Crashed Alien Attacker from the Mad Max Contest Entry ID4 Movie, along with an original sculpt he had done, his T. A. C. C. - Titan Amphibious Calvary Corps figures. In addition, I had a Spaceborne 2010 figure (also sculpted by Paul), which the late Vince Buonfiglio had done. I brought the pieces with me to have something to enter in the contest, since Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Scratch Built Diorama Contest Entry alas, I hadn t quite completed anything additional since last year s show. So after arriving back at the Crowne I entered these pieces into the contest. Then, I was off to take in an in-progress Modeling How-To program, which had started 25 minutes prior. Making Friends & Making Models Jason Eaton and Mike Salzo were talking about Making Friend and Making Models for their program. They ve been doing modeling projects professionally over the past number of years for different companies in the industry. During their program they discussed different ways they conduct business, some helpful hints, and listed some pitfalls they try to avoid. They also showcased some of the projects they ve completed in a slide-show presentation. Directly afterward I visited the Vendors rooms. The Vendors Room #1 I didn t make a whole lot of purchases on my first day at the show. I picked up an E-Wing resin space fighter, (which is a variation of the X-Wing), along with some Vallejo Metallic paints. I also purchased two tools designed for precise CA glue and liquid cement applications. Finally, I stumbled upon some aluminumtooled engine thrusters. (They d be perfect for several scratch-built spacecraft I d been working on). Afterward I spent the rest of the day in the Contest room. After-hours activities At 5 pm we were all shooed out of the contest room. I decided to once again grab something to eat at 8

9 Hometown Pizza. This go round I ended up attending with several fellow Gundam/Anime aficionados, Floyd Bazin and Matt Mrozek. After dining there for an hour or so we headed back to the Crowne. I dropped by the Resin Illuminati and UGH! Models suites, hanging out until well after midnight, (at which point I decided to return to our hotel room and crash for the morning). Sunday s Activities Sunday morning came waaaay too early. (I think I only got four or five hours of sleep). I pulled myself out of bed, got ready and was on my way for the FINAL DAY OF THE SHOW! Upon arriving back at the Crowne I preceded back to the Contest room, taking the rest of my pictures of entries which had caught my eye the previous day. When finally done I decided to head back to the Vendors room, for some final, last minute deals - Ya know? Those deals vendors make, when wheelin -n-dealin, trying to get last-minute sales in? JMC Productions, Sam Greenwell & Amazing Figure Modeler Upon re-entering the first Vendors room I made my way back over to JMC Productions, and purchased an additional E-Wing fighter, along with three Zed-95 Fighters, which is also a variation of the X-Wing. Then, I headed over to the Amazing Figure Modeler area to pick up a copy of their latest magazine. Finally, I finished my purchases by picking up a really, r-e-a-l-l-y nice 1:6 scale figure. It had been assembled and painted by sculptor extraordinaire Sam Greenwell (Greenwell Studios), and was one of his personal pieces. At his $75 asking price I couldn t pass it up. The bewitching hour of five pm quickly approached, and I decided to head up to the Award s Ceremony. Awards Ceremony As it turned out, all three pieces I entered in the contest received an award. Paul s T. A. C. C. figures received a Bronze and his Crashed Alien Attacker actually got a SILVER! The Spaceborne figure received a Bronze as well. In addition, I had previously received a little note from the Fine Scale Modeler representatives. They had placed a card next to the T. A. C. C. scene asking permission to take pictures of it for their magazine. At the end of the ceremony I headed down to retrieve my entries. Hanging out with the Starship Modeler Crew at the Smokey Bones Restaurant Sunday evening, at the end of the show a group of us went out to dine at a local steak restaurant (Smokey HUGE Scratch Built Space 1999 Eagle Transport Bones). With there being a total of 25 of us, it took a while for a table long enough to accommodate all of us to free up. The food was good, the company was enjoyable, and the atmosphere was very festive. After we finished eating we headed back to the Crowne. I hung out at several of the suites once again until the early morning hours, at which point I finally decided to call it quits and head back to the hotel room. Monday Morning - Heading Home Monday morning came waaaay too quickly (once again). After trying to get those last few, precious minutes of sleep in, I finally decided to jump on the road for my return trip. I packed up the car, filled it up with gas and was on my way. Some Final Show Thoughts It s been just over four weeks since this year s Wonderfest Show took place, and by far, this is my quickest turn-around with respect to writing and completing my associated report! The show, was once again a very enjoyable affair. I ALWAYS enjoy myself when attending! I got a chance to hang out with some ole W-Fest friends, picked up some really nice models along with some unique tools and accessories, viewed some really spectacular models, and even have some awards to pass along for the models I entered in the contest. The associated trip out there by car, along with the show itself always comes at a perfect time for me personally - at the end of a grueling school year, when the stress and energy-sapping task of teaching mathematics to middle school students has me TOTALLY DRAINED! This year s Wonderfest Show was just what the doctor ordered. I can t wait for next year s show. Postscript You can read a more detailed report which I ve written and posted on the web by going to: www. scififantmodmadrealm.com/wonderfest html. God s Blessings and keep the glue and paint flowing. - Tony n 9
