* 4. DATA PRESENTATION 4. Base Map and Fight Path J Photo map bases at /0,000 scae were prepared by enargement of aeria photographs of the areas. " They were used during the course of the survey for visua navigation and preiminary fight path recovery. The recorded MRS III radar positioning data was used to derive the fina fight track position, with an accuracy in the order of 0 meters. fight paths were potted at /0,000 scae and m presented on screened topographic bases. Regis tration was confirmed by a check with manuay potted fiducias and the genera accuracy with The respect to photographic detai is within about 20 meters.

4-2 4 * 2 Eectromagnetic Profie Maps The eectromagnetic data was recorded digitay at a high sampe rate of 0/second with a sma time constant of 0. second. A two stage digita fiter- m j ing process was carried out to reject major sferic events, and to reduce system noise. Loca sferic activity can produce sharp, arge ampitude events that cannot be removed by conven tiona fitering procedures. Smoothing or stacking wi reduce their ampitude but eave a broader residua response that can be confused with a geo- ogica phenomenon. To avoid this possibiity, j a computer agorithm searches out and rejects the major sferic events. The signa to noise ratio was further enhanced by the appication of a ow pass digita fiter. It has zero phase shift which prevents any ag or peak dispacement from occurring, and it suppresses ony m variations with a waveength ess than about 0.25 seconds. This ow effective time constant permits maximum profie shape resoution. Foowing the fitering processes, a base eve correction was made. The correction appied is a

^ 4-3 inear function of time that ensures that the. corrected ampitude of the various in-phase and quadrature components is zero when no conductive or permeabe source is present. The fitered and eveed data were then presented in profie map form. I The in-phase and quadrature responses of the coaxia 4479 Hz and the copanar 434 Hz config- H uration were potted with fight path and presented B as a two coour overay. The in-phase and quad rature responses of the coaxia 954 Hz configur- I ation were potted with eectromagnetic anomay information.

4-4 B 4*3 Magnetic Contour Maps The aeromagnetic data was corrected for diurna variations by subtraction of the digitay recorded base station magnetic profie. No correction for regiona variation was appied. m The corrected profie data was interpoated onto a reguar grid at a 2.5 mm interva using a cubic spine technique. The grid provided the basis for threading the presented contours at a 0 gamma interva. The aeromagnetic data was presented with eectromagnetic anomay information.

VLF-EM Contour Maps The VLF-EM signa from NAA, Cuter, Maine was compied in map form. The mean response eve of the tota fied signa was removed and the data was gridded and contoured at an interva of 2%. The VLF-EM data was presented with eectro magnetic anomay information. As noted on the VLF contour map for area B, a section of the data (ines ) has been indicated as unreiabe. It was found that one of the 3 orthogona receiver antennae was not functioning. This woud sti permit variation in tota fied to be measured but changes in bird orientation woud ead to spurious variations. Major anomay trends can sti be recognized but one ine variations are probaby non-geoogic.

M M 5- ^^^^^^^ 5. INTERPRETATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS The eectromagnetic profie maps were anaysed to identify those responses typica of bedrock conductors, As discussed in Appendix I, the profie shape can indicate the genera geometry of the conductive source, Anomaies that exhibited the characteristics of a horizonta conducting ayer were attributed to conductive overburden. Those with characteristics of a thin steepy g dipping sheet were interpreted to be of bedrock origin. Where the response shape was indufficienty diagnostic to rue out the possibiity of a conductive overburden source the conductor axis was indicated as "possibe". The process of conductor identification was based entirey on profie shape with no imitation paced on the estimated m conductance. However, this parameter was cacuated by appication of the coaxia in-phase and quadrature response to the phasor diagram for the vertica haf-pane mode. This was carried out by computer and the resuts are presented on the interpretation map in symboized form. i The estimated conductance is a measure of the conductive properties of the source. A ow conductance of say, 4 mhos or ess is indicative of eectroytic conduction in fauts or shears or possiby minor disseminated mineraization.

5-2 Higher conductances indicate that eectronic conduction is a factor and that significant suphide or graphite mineraization is present. God, as a resut of its ow concentration, and certain base meta suphides due to poor eectrica conduction, " cannot be expected to produce a high conductance anomay. B Accessory conductive mineraization may produce a recog nizabe response, and indirecty provide an eectromag- I netic signature. Simiary, a faut or shear zone, favourabe to minera empacement, may be identified by eectroytic, as opposed to minera, conductivity. M H I The overa survey in the Terrace Bay area has identified a arge number of conductors interpreted to be of bedrock origin. The conductivity anomaies may be associated with magnetic features and this reationship may provide an indication as to the nature of the conductive source. It is for this reason that the interpreted bedrock eectromagnetic conductor axes have been coded to indicate the nature of magnetic association. VLF-EM conductor axes have been outined to indicate zones of possibe bedrock conductivity. They have not been incuded where the conductive source was fet to be overburden, nor where coincident with chosen HEM conductors.

5-3 The eectromagnetic anomaies identified by the survey B are interpreted to be of cutura origin. The magnetic * map indicates severa, reativey intense magnetic anomaies that are ikey associated with mafic vocanic rocks. The geophysica survey has provided no direct target for m foow-up investigation but it is recommended that those most famiiar with the detaied geoogy of the area review the data for possibe indirect indication of zones potentiay favourabe to further investigation. 19 m 4 APPENDIX I - GENERAL INTERPRETIVE CONSIDERATIONS Eectromagnetic The Aerodat 3 frequency system utiizes 2 different transmitter-receiver coi geometries. The traditiona coaxia coi configuration is operated at 2 widey separated frequencies and the horizonta copanar coi pair is operated at a frequency approximatey aigned with one of the coaxia frequencies. The eectromagnetic response measured by the heicopter system is a function of the "eectrica" and "geometrica" properties of the conductor. The "eectrica" property of a conductor is determined argey by its conductivity m and its size and shape; the "geometrica" property of the response is argey a function of the conductors shape and orientation with respect to the measuring transmitter and receiver. Eectrica Considerations m For a given conductive body the measure of its conductivity or conductance is cosey reated to the measured phase shift between the received and transmitted eectromagnetic fied. A sma phase shift indicates a reativey high conductance, a arge phase shift ower conductance. A sma phase shift resuts in a arge in-phase to quadrature

H 4fc APPENDIX I ratio and a arge phase shift a ow ratio. This reation- I ship is shown quantitativey for a vertica haf-pane mode on the accompanying phasor diagram. Other physica modes wi show the same trend but different quantitative. reationships. m B m U The phasor diagram for the vertica haf-pane mode, as presented, is for the coaxia coi configuration with the ampitudes in ppm as measured at the response peak over the conductor. To assist the interpretation of the survey resuts the computer is used to identify the apparent conductance and depth at seected anomaies. The resuts o f this cacuation are presented in tabe form in Appendix II and the conductance and in-phase ampitude are presented in symboized form on the map presentation. The conductance and depth vaues as presented are correct ony as far as the mode approximates the rea geoogica situation. The actua geoogica source may be of imited ength, have significant dip, its conductivity and thickness H may vary with depth and/or strike and adjacent bodies and overburden may have modified the response. In genera the conductance estimate is ess affected by these imitations than is the depth estimate, but both shoud be considered as reative rather than absoute guides to the anomay's M properties.

* APPENDIX I m Conductance in mhos is the reciproca of resistance in ohms and in the case of narrow sab-ike bodies is the product of eectrica conductivity and thickness. Most overburden wi have an indicated conductance of ess M than 2 mhos; however, more conductive cays may have an apparent conductance of say 2 to 4 mhos. Aso in the ow conductance range wi be eectroytic conductors in fauts and shears. The higher ranges of conductance, greater than 4 mhos, indicate that a significant fraction of the eectrica conduction is eectronic rather than eectroytic in nature. Materias that conduct eectronicay are imited m to certain metaic suphides and to graphite. High conductance anomaies, roughy 0 mhos or greater, are generay imited to suphide or graphite bearing rocks. Suphide mineras with the exception of sphaerite, cinnabar and stibnite are good conductors; however, they may occur g in a disseminated manner that inhibits eectrica conduction through the rock mass. In this case the apparent conductance " can seriousy underrate the quaity of the conductor in geoogica terms. In a simiar sense the reativey non- conducting suphide mineras noted above may be present in significant concentration in association with minor conductive

- 4 - APPENDIX I suphides, and the eectromagnetic response ony reate to the minor associated mineraization. Indicated conductance is aso of itte direct significance for the identification m o f god mineraization. Athough god is highy conductive it woud not be expected to exist in sufficient quantity to create a recognizabe anomay, but minor accessory suphide mineraization coud provide a usefu indirect indication. In summary, the estimated conductance of a conductor can provide a reativey positive identification of significant suphide or graphite mineraization; however, a moderate to ow conductance vaue does not rue out the possibiity B of significant economic mineraization. m B B Geometrica Considerations Geometrica information about the geoogic conductor can often be interpreted from the profie shape of the anomay. The change in shape is primariy reated to the change in inductive couping among the transmitter, the target, and the receiver. In the case of a thin, steepy dipping, sheet-ike conductor, the coaxia coi pair wi yied a near symmetric peak over the conductor. On the other hand the copanar coi pair wi g pass through a nu coupe reationship and yied a minimum over the conductor, fanked by positive side obes. As the dip of the conductor decreases from vertica, the coaxia

- 5 - APPENDIX I anomay shape changes ony sighty, but in the case of the copanar coi pair the side obe on the down dip side strengthens reative to that on the up dip side. As the thickness of the conductor increases, induced current fow across the thickness of the conductor becomes reativey significant and compete nu couping with the B copanar cois is no onger possibe. As a resut, the apparent minimum of the copanar response over the conductor diminishes with increasing thickness, and in the imiting case of a fuy 3 dimensiona body or a horizonta ayer or haf-space, the minimum disappears competey. H A horizonta conducting ayer such as overburden wi produce a response in the coaxia and copanar cois that is a function of atitude (and conductivity if not uniform). The profie shape wi be simiar in both coi configurations with an ampitude ratio (copanar/coaxia) of about 4/*. In the case of a spherica conductor, the induced currents are confined to the voume of the sphere, but not reativey restricted to any arbitrary pane as in the case of a sheet- I ike form. The response of the copanar coi pair directy j over the sphere may be up to 8* times greater than that of the coaxia coi pair.

m Q APPENDIX I In summary a steepy dipping, sheet-ike conductor wi dispay a decrease in the copanar response coincident with the peak of the coaxia response. The reative M s trength of this copanar nu is reated inversey to the thickness of the conductor; a pronounced nu indicates a reativey thin conductor. The dip of such a conductor can be inferred from the reative ampitudes of the side-obes. Massive conductors that coud be approximated by a conducting g sphere wi dispay a simpe singe peak profie form on both coaxia and copanar cois, with a ratio between the copanar to coaxia response ampitudes as high as 8.* Overburden anomaies often produce broad poory defined m anomay profies. In most cases the response of the copanar cois cosey foows that of the coaxia cois with a reative ampitude ratio of 4.* B Occasionay if the edge of an overburden zone is sharpy defined with some significant depth extent, an edge effect wi occur in the coaxia cois. In the case of a horizonta conductive ring or ribbon, the coaxia response wi consist of two peaks, one over each edge; whereas the copanar coi wi yied a singe peak.

- 7 - APPENDIX I *It shoud be noted at this point that Aerodat's definition of the measured ppm unit is reated to the primary fied sensed in the receiving coi without normaization to the maximum couped (coaxia configuration). If such normaization were appied to the Aerodat units, the ampitude of the copanar coi pair woud be haved.

m A APPENDIX I Magnetics The Tota Fied Magnetic Map shows contours of the tota magnetic fied, uncorrected for regiona varia- I tion. Whether an EM anomay with a magnetic correm ation is more ikey to be caused by a suphide deposit than one without depends on the type of mineraization. An apparent coincidence between an EM and a magnetic anomay may be caused by a conductor which is aso magnetic, or by a conductor which ies m in cose proximity to a magnetic body. The majority of conductors which are aso magnetic are suphides containing pyrrhotite and/or magnetite. Conductive and magnetic bodies in cose association can be, and often are, graphite and magnetite. It is often very mm d ifficut to distinguish between these cases. If the conductor is aso magnetic, it wi usuay produce an EM anomay whose genera pattern resembes that of the magnetics. Depending on the magnetic permeabiity of the conducting body, the ampitude of mm the inphase EM anomay wi be weakened, and if the conductivity is aso weak, the inphase EM anomay may even be reversed in sign.

- 9 - APPENDIX U "VLF Eectromagnetics The VLF-EM method empoys the radiation from powerfu miitary radio transmitters as the primary signas. The magnetic fied associated with the primary fied is eipticay poarized in the vicinity of eectrica conductors. The Herz Totem uses three cois in the X, M Y, Z configuration to measure the tota fied and vertica quadrature component of the poarization eipse. The reativey high frequency of VLF 5-25 khz provides high response factors for bodies of ow conductance. Reativey "disconnected" suphide ores have been found B to produce measurabe VLF signas. For the same reason, poor conductors such as sheared contacts, breccia zones, narrow fauts, ateration zones and porous fow tops normay produce VLF anomaies. The method can therefore be used effectivey for geoogica mapping. The ony reative disadvantage of the method ies in its sensitivity * to conductive overburden. In conductive ground the depth of exporation is severey imited. m The effect of strike direction is important in the sense of the reation of the conductor axis reative to the energizing eectromagnetic fied. A conductor aigned aong a radius drawn from a transmitting station wi be

m APPENDIX in a maximum couped orientation and thereby produce a stronger response than a simiar conductor at a different strike ange. Theoreticay it woud be possibe for a conductor, oriented tangentiay to the transmitter to produce no signa. The most obvious effect of the strike m ange consideration is that conductors favouraby oriented with respect to the transmitter ocation and aso near perpendicuar to the fight direction are most ceary rendered and usuay dominate the map presentation. The tota fied response is an indicator of the existence and position of a conductivity anomay. The response wi be a maximum over the conductor, without any specia fitering, and strongy favour the upper edge of the conductor even in M the case of a reativey shaow dip. H B The vertica quadrature component over steepy dipping sheet ike conductor wi be a cross-over type response with the cross-over cosey associated with the upper edge of the conductor. The response is a cross-over type due to the fact that it is the vertica rather than tota fied quadrature component that is measured. The response shape is due argey to geometrica rather than conductivity considerations and the distance between the maximum and minimum on either side of the cross-over is reated to target depth. For a given target geometry, the arger this distance the greater the

m A - - APPENDIX I depth. The ampitude of the quadrature response, as opposed to shape is function of target conductance and depth as we as the conductivity of the overburden and host rock. As the primary fied traves down to the conductor * through conductive materia it is both attenuated and j phase shifted in a negative sense. The secondary fied produced by this atered fied at the target aso has an associated phase shift. This phase shift is positive and is arger for reativey poor conductors. This secondary " fied is attenuated and phase shifted in a negative sense M during return trave to the surface. The net effect of these 3 phase shifts determine the phase of the secondary fied sensed at the receiver. A reativey poor conductor in resistive ground wi yied a net positive phase shift. A reativey good conductor in more conductive ground wi yied a net negative phase j shift. A combination is possibe whereby the net phase shift is zero and the response is purey in-phase with no quadrature component. A net positive phase shift combined with the geometrica cross-over shape wi ead to a positive quadrature response on the side of approach and a negative on the side of departure. A net negative phase shift woud produce the reverse. A further sign reversa occurs with a 80 degree

- 2 - APPENDIX change in instrument orientation as occurs on reciproca ine headings. During digita processing of the quad- I rature data for map presentation this is corrected for by normaizing the sign to one of the fight ine headings
