They ikey have seen the process of purchasing goods and/or services in such paces as a grocery store, post office, etc. They may earn money by heping with chores around the home. They may aready have experience with purchasing items themseves. As they are earning the vaue of coins, they may ask about bis aso. You may decide to show chidren bis such as a doar, five doars, ten doars and twenty doars. Encourage them to examine the bis and discuss how coins and bis are simiar and different. Have chidren use actions and words to respond. What woud you do first to find the tota vaue of this group of coins? Start with 25 since that is the vaue of the quarter. What woud you do next? Possibe answer: A dime is 10. Count on 10 to get 35. Then what woud you do? Possibe answer: Count on 5 more for the nicke to get 40. Repeat the activity with other groups of coins and have chidren describe how they woud find the vaue of each group of coins. Have them put the pennies in ten frames to aid in counting. Suppose that I have another quarter. How can I show the vaue of 2 quarters with pennies? Trade the second quarter for 25 more pennies. Have chidren make the trade and add the pennies to the ten frames. 5 c On Your Own Independent Practice If chidren answered Exercises 2 and 3 correcty, assign Exercises 4 8. They can use their MathBoards to continue to write vaues as they count if they need to. Probem Exercise 8 requires higher order thinking as chidren count 4 quarters. Go Deeper To extend thinking, have chidren write a two-digit number on each of three index cards. Have partners exchange the cards and use coins to find combinations that make each tota vaue. Chaenge chidren to find combinations that use the fewest coins. It can cook food, warm our bodies, and hep pants grow. Te chidren you are going to do an activity that uses energy from the sun. Each chid gets a piece of back construction paper and some pennies. Have them write their names on the paper using chak or crayon. Find a sunny spot outside, set papers on the ground, and have chidren pace pennies in a design on their piece of paper. Coins shoud not overap. Leave the designs in the sun for a few minutes, or onger. Papers shoud be kept in a safe pace if you are going to eave them. Bring papers in and remove the coins. The energy from the sun shoud have faded the paper that was not covered by the coins. Materias severa exampes of state-specific quarters Provide exampes of severa state quarters. Hep chidren notice that the fronts are the same, but the backs are specific to a state. Discuss different images seen on the backs of the quarters and discuss that states chose their designs to represent things about their state. If chidren have difficuty getting started, you might suggest they use a pattern, or think about trading coins. Point out that there are more combinations than wi fit in the tabe.
