2 G SAFETY WARNINGS Safety warigs ad precautios must be read ad uderstood before the OTS100AF/OTS80AF/OTS60AF is used. They must be observed durig use. The OTS100AF/80AF/60AF must oly be used i the way iteded ad for the stated purposes described by Megger. The OTS100AF/80AF/60AF must ot be used if ay part of it is damaged. The OTS100AF/80AF/60AF must be properly earthed. A supplemetary earth termial is provided. Positio the OTS100AF/80AF/60AF so that power ca be easily removed. The OTS100AF/80AF/60AF must ot be used i wet locatios or with rai fallig o the istrumet. The OTS100AF/80AF/60AF must oly be used for testig electrical grades of isulatig liquids. No other objects or substaces should be placed i the test chamber. The OTS100AF/80AF/60AF must oly be used with oe of Megger s precisio test vessels or VCM100D/VCM80D correctly fitted o the support hors i the test chamber. Replacemet fuses must be of the correct type ad ratig. Calibratio or repair must oly be carried out by a Megger qualified repair facility. The test chamber must be kept clea ad free from lit or other fibres. The OTS100AF/80AF/60AF weigh 30 kg. Care should be take whe liftig the istrumet. It is prohibited to isert foreig objects ito ay gap o the istrumet before or durig a test. Uit must be used i a well vetilated locatio. Small quatities of Ozoe may be created after prologed testig. NOTE THE OTS100AF/OTS80AF/OTS60AF MUST ONLY BE USED BY SUITABLY TRAINED AND COMPETENT PERSONS. IF THESE INSTRUMENTS ARE NOT USED IN THE MANNER SPECIFIED PROTECTION MAY BE IMPAIRED 2

5 Geeral descriptio Megger s OTS100AF/80AF/60AF Oil test sets are laboratory liquid dielectric breakdow testers. They are fully automatic, lie powered ad facilitate accurate breakdow voltage tests o mieral, ester ad silico isulatig oils. The precisio test vessel sets the accuracy stadard for the liquid isulatio test idustry. For ease of use the istrumets come preprogrammed with a library of iteratioal breakdow test stadards ad the ability to create custom tests. The istrumet is housed i a metal case with moulded ed caps that accommodate hadles. The test chamber is desiged with a easy-clea surface ad provides a drai for spilt oil through a iteral pipe routed to the rear of the istrumet. A beaker or similar ca be used for spillage collectio. The test area is covered by a trasparet lid with a electrically coductive scree which, with the metal case, provides a safe equipotetial eclosure for high voltage testig. The lid allows i plety of ambiet light eablig users to cofirm stirrig ad the witess breakdow. The chamber lid is dual redudat safety protected with micro-switches to prevet accidetal electrificatio. A zero volt touch bar at the etrace to the chamber ehaces safety to for the user. The precisio test vessel desig yields highly accurate ad repeatable results. Two stirrig optios are available; a iteral magetic bea stirrer which is dropped ito the oil ad a optioal lid mouted impeller that coforms to ASTM D 1816 requiremet. Stirrig durig breakdow testig is used to produce a homogeeous distributio of cotamiats withi the oil ad to free ay carbo geerated betwee electrodes durig testig. Electrode gap is set by precisio adjustmet wheels that lock i positio esurig that the electrodes do ot move durig a busy day. It is, however, advisable to check the electrode coditio ad gap daily because it is the most critical parameter i breakdow voltage testig. Flat aodised Alumiium gap settig gauges are supplied i popular sizes to facilitate electrode gap settig. Electrodes are detachable ad are available i shapes that meet all iteratioal stadards, i.e. disk, spherical ad mushroom (VDE) electrodes. A selectio of iteratioal breakdow tests are chose from a library of stadard sequeces ad started from the user friedly meu o the LCD display. The top level test scree displays all pertiet test iformatio to esure the correct electrodes are used with the specified electrode gap settig. Results are viewed o scree ad prited o either a exteral USB priter or the iteral priter followig a test result. I the evet of a breakdow ot occurrig before reachig the maximum voltage, the istrumet will retur maximum voltage result. This is a safety measure to esure the istrumet is ot drive over its desiged maximum voltage. The istrumet automatically turs off the display 15 miutes after completio of a test sequece or last use. The dielectric breakdow voltage is a measure of the isulatig ability of a liquid to withstad electrical stress. Cotamiats such as cellulosic fibres, coductig particles, dirt, ad water reduce breakdow voltage of a isulatig liquid. A low result idicates the presece of oe or more of these cotamiats. The test set is fully automatic. The operator has simply to prepare the test vessel, load it with sample oil, place it i the test chamber, select the appropriate specificatio for the tests ad the start the test sequece. The test set automatically carries out the sequece of tests as defied by the pre-selected atioal specificatios. Oil testig specificatios, for which the sets are pre-programmed, are as follows: ASTM D ASTM D 877 A & B BS EN CEI EN IEC IRAM JIS C (M) & (S) PA SEV EN UNE EN NF EN SABS EN VDE 0370 Part 5 AS A critical factor with respect to field testig of oil is its temperature, because samples from a trasformer take shortly after switch off ca be may degrees hotter tha equivalet room temperature laboratory tests performed at 20 ºC to 23 ºC. The OTS100AF/80AF/60AF istrumets measure the oil temperature durig the test so that temperature correctio ca be applied to results. NB: Certai stadards require field tests to be performed betwee 20 ºC ad 30 ºC. 6

7 Istrumet cotrols ad idicators Keypad priter pael The cotrol pael, illustrated below, is located to the frot right side of the istrumet ad cotais a QVGA colour scree (1), avigatio keypad with OK (6) butto ad a TEST (4) butto. The operatio is user friedly ad drive from six top level widows. A start-up LED (2) is used durig istrumet iitialisatio. A flat pael replaces the priter if ot ordered. The priter is a dot matrix impact priter with 57.5 mm wide paper roll. Paper results prited o this priter will ot blacke i high temperatures. The pael has two lockig studs ad a cetral prit advace butto. 7

It is madatory for safe operatio that a earth groud cable is attached to this istrumet before performig tests. The groud coectio is idetified as item 1 i the illustratio. Attetio must be paid to product warigs ad markigs. Two USB iterface coectors, oe type A (4) ad oe type B (5), offer USB host ad device iterfaces. A secod USB type A (host) iterface is located o the frot of the istrumet for user coveiece. The USB type A iterface (4) is used to drive a priter or flash/hard disk drive. 8

9 Preparatios for use Gettig started It is importat to read the user guide thoroughly before operatig the OTS100AF/80AF/60AF for the first time. The safety warigs are particularly importat. Supply voltage Before coectig lie power to the istrumet the groud coector should be coected to a suitable earth poit. The OTS100AF/80AF/60AF are desiged to operate o 50/60 Hz AC lie power i the rage 90 to 265 V. Assembly Upack istrumet ad cotets of the packig box. Esure that the istrumet is placed o a solid surface or table with sufficiet workig space. Coect groud to a suitable earth coector. Fit selected electrodes to the threaded shafts i the test vessel takig care ot to scratch electrode surfaces. Electrodes should be had tighteed oto the shafts to prevet ay movemet durig use. Adjustmet of the electrode gap should be doe with the feeler gauges provided, adjustmet wheels locked ad the gap rechecked. Fit test vessel ito istrumet chamber. Coect lie power. Tur o the istrumet. Follow the istrumet setup procedure detailed below. Istrumet setup procedure The required laguage optio is selected from the top level tabbed widow. The flag symbol is used as a ico represetig laguage optio. Simply use the up/dow arrow buttos to use the right arrow key to avigate across the tabs to the laguage scree, select the required laguage ad press OK. The followig actios, accessed from the Settigs tab widow, should be take before ruig a test for the first time: 1. Set date ad time Time/Date optio. 2. Adjust the display backlight for optimum legibility Display Setup optio. 3. Select uits - metric or imperial. 4. Set priter optios. A library of iteratioal oil test stadards is preloaded itot hte istrumet. It is importat to select the test stadards that will actually be used to prevet havig to avigate through the complete list. Navigate across the top level tabs usig left/right arrow buttos to the Tools widow ad use the up/dow arrow buttos to go to Select Favourite Tests. Navigate to a required test ad press OK to select or deselect a stadard test. Fuctios like, SELECT ALL ad RETURN whe all required stadard tests have bee selected. Calibratio The OTS100AF/80AF/60AF are calibrated i the factory prior to delivery so there is o eed to calibrate o iitial setup. The VCM100D/VCM80D voltage check devices ca be used to cofirm the output voltage of the istrumet by readig the voltage directly at the electrode before ruig tests. Periodic checkig of actual test voltage usig the VCM100D/ VCM80D is recommeded. The voltage check test is accessed from the Tools tab widow. Test vessel mortised stirrer Upack the optioal motorised stirrer assembly from its box ad fit the stirrer shaft to the uderside of the stirrer assembly. The uit is ready for use. The oil test vessel lid is removed ad the stirrer assembly used as a lid for tests that require stirrig. Whe ot i use care should be take to store the stirrer shaft ad stirrer lid assembly i the carry bag provided with the istrumet. Trasportatio ad storage The OTS100AF/80AF/60AF are precisio istrumets that geerates HV up to 100 kv depedig o model ad eeds to be trasported ad stored carefully. The uit should be stored i a room or area where the eviromet is withi the temperature rage of -30 ºC to 65 ºC ad maximum humidity of 95% at 45 ºC. 9

10 Operatig istructios Top level tabs The user is preseted with a set of six tabbed, top level widows as depicted below which facilitate istrumet cotrol. Left ad right arrow keys avigate betwee tabs. Home Setup File Iformatio Tools Laguage The home tab cotais summary iformatio for each showig the selected automatic test stadard, ID of the asset the isulatig liquid comes from, the type of isulator, electrode gap ad the stirrer if required. This is the mai scree from which tests are ru. Setup widow offers istrumet settigs of laguage (ca also be set from laguage widow overcomes difficulty whe istrumet is set to ukow laguages), time/date, display, uits, priter ad a settig to select fast detectio of breakdow. Users ca prit, save, recall, delete ad dowload results to a USB drive from the file widow. The Iformatio widow offers details about the istrumet software cofiguratio/versio as well as a help fuctio that serves as a idexed user guide. The Tools widow offers the ability to maage test stadards icludig the ability to defie custom tests, favourite tests ad add ad remove ew stadards ad stadard upgrades via USB disk. A automatic electrode clea fuctio is icluded as a meas of removig deposits from electrode surfaces. This widow also rus a test usig the VCM100D/VCM80D voltage testers to check output voltage at the electrode barrier. The flag symbol is used as a ico represetig laguage optio. 11 Navigatio ad Character Etry The keypad cosists of arrow keys surroudig a OK butto used for avigatig the screes ad selectig fuctios ad optios. These six buttos fully cotrol the istrumet. Withi each user iterface widow the up ad dow arrow buttos are used to avigate up ad dow the fuctios listed o the left side of the scree. Left ad right arrow buttos avigate betwee tabs o the top level widow for optimum speed. Users ca avigate ito lower level widows usig the up/dow arrow buttos ad the OK butto to reach, for example, the Display Setup fuctio. The user avigates to Display Setup ad presses OK to get to the display setup widow. The up/dow or the left/right buttos adjust brightess with a bar idicator showig brightess percetage. The OK butto is used to set brightess after adjustmet ad subsequet retur to the settigs widow. The followig images illustrate this fuctioality. Keypad etry is via the 12 butto keypad. If a alpha character is required the relevat key is pressed util the character appears i the scree etry field. Uppercase alpha characters are default ad lower case mode is etered by pressig the shift ( ) key before eterig the desired character. Pressig shift agai will eter umeric digit etry mode. 11

12 Favourite test stadards It is importat to setup favourite test stadards from the stadards library to avoid avigatig thorough the etire list each time you wat to chage to a differet test. To do this avigate to the Tools top level widow ad select Maage test stadards. The move dow to Select favourite tests ad choose oly those tests which you require, makig sure you have the most recet versio of each test, uless you specifically wat to use a old test stadard. Tests are greyed out whe selected. Simply retur to the previous screes to save your selectio. The screes below illustrate this process. Performig a breakdow test Select the Home tab widow usig the arrow keys ad OK butto. This widow offers a summary of iformatio required for a measuremet. The followig image shows a typical setup with the selected stadard test, the test ID comprised of a asset umber or a serial umber, the type of oil, required electrode gap, electrode shape ad fially the stirrer. Whe the user selects a particular stadard oly valid optios are preseted with respect to gap settig, electrodes ad stirrer optios. Navigatio is simple; up ad dow arrow buttos move up ad dow the left side of the widow whilst optios for each lie ca be scrolled through usig the OK key, or iformatio etered i the case of Test ID. Test i progress Durig a test the scree flashes red warig HV symbols to remid the user that a high voltage test is i progress. As a safety measure, ay key press will immediately halt the test. The electrode potetial differece is displayed as it ramps up i over-sized digits to emphasise the presece of high voltage. Betwee tests there is a dwell time ad possibly a stirrig actio. A cout dow timer idicates period of dwell or stirrig remaiig. 12

13 Test results At the ed of ay test results are show o the scree. A typical example is the ASTM D A test. This image shows the complete o-scree iformatio preseted to the user however the scree size is aturally smaller so a slider fuctio eables the user to avigate through the result ad prit it if required. All scree based test results accommodate 10 breakdow tests but tests with less tha 10 breakdows use oly the relevat results to produce statistics i.e. statistics of mea breakdow voltage, data dispersio, rage ad stadard deviatio. Pritig a result ca be selected as default or from the PRINT fuctio withi the results widow. Custom tests Custom tests are tests that ca be defied by a user by givig the user cotrol over the rage of parameters set i a test. Three custom tests have bee pre-programmed for user defiitio; Custom (5) this test cotais five successive breakdow tests Custom (6) this test cotais six successive breakdow tests Custom (10) this test cotais te successive breakdow tests Navigate to the Tools top level scree as illustrated below. Select, Maage Test Stadards by pressig the OK butto. Go dow to, Edit Custom Test Parameters ad press the OK butto. The custom parameters scree shows a set of variables that cotrol a breakdow test. Each variable is user settable, simply avigate dow to the required settig, press the OK butto ad proceed to chage the value as required. For umeric etry o the OTS AF models the decimal poit ca be etered by quickly pressig the digit 1 twice. So to eter 2.5 mm gap settig the user eters the followig sequece: 2 1, 1 5 OK I the customs test parameters scree set max. kv may appear as, set kv (max. xxx) i certai versios of firmware. All etry fields i the custom test parameters scree are rage checked to esure it is valid. Whe all values are set the user avigates back to the Tools scree via the RETURN fuctio. The user should esure that Custom (5) ad Custom (6) are selected as favourite tests before leavig the maage test stadards scree. 13

14 Basic memory fuctios The iteral memory is limited to fifty test records where a record represets a full result of oe of the programmed stadard tests. Best practice is to backup iteral results o a daily basis by savig oto a USB memory device. Whe savig to USB memory device, a fileame i the format of a maximum of eight characters is required ad the fileame etered must oly cotai characters A-Z, a-z ad 0-9. Memory fuctios are accessible from the files meu ad iclude the followig: Save Recall Delete Prit last result The user ca select betwee iteral memory ad a USB memory device for the save, recall ad delete fuctios. After selectio of a memory locatio the relevat files are displayed o scree. Navigatio is via the arrow keys as follows: Up ad dow arrow move up ad dow oe item at a time. Left ad right arrows implemet a page up ad page dow fuctio to assist avigatio where large umbers of file are preset. I the delete fuctio widow the user ca select all, deselect all or select oe file at a time. Select a sigle file by avigatig to the file (blue highlight) ad pressig OK to select (red highlight chagig to grey whe avigatig away from the selected file.) The recall fuctio operates o oe file at a time. Trasfer results to a USB flash drive Users may wat to copy results from iteral memory to a USB memory device as either a ed-of-day procedure or wheever the 50 result file limit is reached. The followig procedure will backup files to a USB memory device: 1. From the file meu, select Save 2. The Select USB 3. Eter a fileame usig oly characters A-Z, a-z ad 0-9 ad retur to save fuctio scree 4. Navigate dow to Select Results a full list of iterally saved results are preseted by TestID. 5. Select required results ad the SAVE to trasfer the results to fileame (as etered) o the memory device. 6. Navigate back to top level fuctios ad remove the memory device (if required) 14

15 Prit quality ad chagig paper The priter cover is removed by turig the two fasteers through a quarter tur ad pullig the pael off. The priter ribbo may eed to be moved o to improve prit quality. To do this, remove the priter cover ad tur the right had rotary wider i directio idicated o the ribbo case. To chage the priter ribbo, simply press the ribbo assembly where it says, PUSH EJECT, to remove the old ribbo ad replace with a ew oe. The part is a Epso ERC-09, Megger part umber Paper is fed ito the housig with the lose paper facig the rear of the istrumet. Esure that the paper is eatly cut ad ot curled up at the ed. Holdig the ed of the paper roll, isert the paper uder the cross bar ad ito the priter slot as show (blue arrows) i the drawig opposite. Press the prit feed key repeatedly util the paper is just visible feedig through the prit mechaism. Replace the priter frot cover by first locatig it at the base of the pael ad secure it with the fasteers which are tured back a quarter tur to secure the pael i place. Fially press the paper feed butto to advace the paper through the frot cover paper slot. Vessel ad Electrodes The oil test vessel ad electrodes require o maiteace other tha cleaig. Electrodes ca be uscrewed ad replaced with aother shape electrode. Electrodes should be examied regularly to esure o pittig has occurred ad the electrodes reewed where pittig is evidet. VCM100D/VCM80D The VCM100D/VCM80D is ot a user serviceable items but may require periodic cleaig usig a clea cloth dampeed with Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA). Test vessel motorised stirrer Megger s motorised stirrer is itegrated ito a modified lid assembly ad simply replaces the vessel lid. Power is coected via a flush mouted rear isert ad is discoected as the stirrer assembly is lifted. This uit is ot user serviceable. 15

16 Prevetive maiteace Geeral The OTS100AF/80AF/60AF are HV istrumets geeratig up to 100 kv ad is ot user serviceable. The user should esure that the lid is ot cracked or distorted before use. The oly iteral part of the istrumet that is accessible to the user is the priter paper housig allowig reewal of paper ad ribbo whe required. Opeig the OTS100AF/80AF/60AF is strictly forbidde ad will costitute a breach of warratee. There is o eed for ay tools to be used with this istrumet other tha the supplied gauges ad magetic bea retriever. Priter cover locks ca be tured usig a suitable coi. Cleaig To clea the outer surfaces of the OTS100AF/80AF/60AF, first discoect from lie power ad the wipe the istrumet usig a clea cloth dampeed with Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA). The user must esure that the test chamber is always kept clea, particularly prior to a test. Wipe away ay spilt oil i the chamber or o the outside of the test vessel with a lit free cloth. Whe a lot of oil is spilt the uit is desiged with a drai facility at the rear. Simply uclip the clear tube ad drai oil ito a beaker or other suitable cotaier. To clea the iside of the test vessel follow the istructios give i the relevat test specificatio or, i the case of o istructios, cleaed with a small volume of the ext sample of oil to be measured. Care for OTS electrodes Brass electrodes supplied with the Megger oil test sets will show sigs of deposits built up from isulatig oil breakdow testig. If left they will oxidise ad appear dull. New electrodes Megger electrodes are supplied i a kit with gap gauges ad magetic stirrer beas ad retrieval stick. the electrodes have differet shapes but are cared for i the same way. If ew electrodes require cleaig, isopropyl alcohol (IPA) may be used to clea them off. It is advisable to immerse the electrodes i clea isulatig oil for a couple of hours prior to use. Cleaig oxidised/dirty electrodes Dirty electrodes may be cleaed with a clea, soft cloth ad brass cleaer but care should be take to use miimal pressure to avoid removal of excessive electrode material. After removig the dirt clea the electrodes with a clea cloth ad IPA. It is advisable to immerse the electrodes i clea isulatig oil for a couple of hours prior to use. If electrodes are pitted or scratched they should be discarded ad ew electrodes fitted. Electrode storage Electrodes may be stored i a suitable cotaier immersed i clea mieral isulatig oil. Electrodes i a test vessel left to stad overight may be left with the last oil sample tested i the vessel. 16

If the protectio of a product has bee impaired it should ot be used, ad be set for repair by suitably traied ad qualified persoel. The protectio is likely to be impaired if, for example, the product shows visible damage, fails to perform the iteded measuremets, has bee subjected to prologed storage uder ufavourable coditios, or has bee exposed to severe trasport stresses. New products are guarateed for 1 year from the date of purchase by the user. Note: Ay uauthorized prior repair or adjustmet will automatically ivalidate the warraty.
