3 Sweet Dreams l by Scottie Foster Paint Delta Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint Lichen Grey Cadet Blue White Blue Spa Straw Charcoal Leprechaun Gypsy Rose DecoArt American Emperor s Gold Brushes Loew-Cornell Series 7040 no. 4 round Series 7040 no. 2 round Series 7040 no. 6/0 liner Misc. Tracing paper, stylus, pencil, white graphite paper, water bowl, paper towels, palette paper Preparation Basecoat a box with Cadet Blue. Trace the pattern onto transparent tracing paper with a pencil. Then transfer the pattern using white graphite paper and a stylus. Instructions Brush Uses: No. 4 round for painting the larger flowers and heart. No. 2 round for painting the smaller flowers. No. 6/0 liner for stems, outlines and veins. (Thin the paint with water to the consistency of ink.) Optional Border (on lid and box bottom) Paint a 1/8-inch-thick line of Emperor s Gold around the lid and bottom. You can do this freehand with a bit of practice, or use blue painter s tape to help with straight lines. You may need two coats. Mums The left mum is White and the right mum is Yellow. Both have White overstrokes. Paint and finish each flower one at a time because they are painted wet-in-wet. Basecoat the entire circle with Lichen Grey (white mum) and Straw (yellow mum). While the basecoat is still wet, wipe the dirty Scottie Foster 7561 Cannoneer Court Warrenton VA scottie@bavarianfolkart.com Web: brush through White and paint strokes on the circle starting from the outside and working toward the middle. There is no set number of strokes but all strokes end at the center bottom. Then double-load the brush with the same basecoat color + White and apply the four outside strokes making sure that each stroke ends at the center bottom of the flower. To finish, add White dots to the throat and an Emperor s Gold dot in the center bottom. Tulip Basecoat with Blue Spa. While wet, add the two white center strokes using a dirty brush poked into White. Then add one stroke to each outside petal. When dry, outline and vein with Blue Spa. Finish with an Emperor s Gold dot at the base. Droopy Daisies Center is Lichen Grey. Petals are Blue Spa double-loaded with White. When dry, paint tiny veins with Blue Spa. Paint White commas on the center and White dots above. Berry Clusters Using the stick end of a small brush, dot Gypsy Rose in a graduated cluster. When dry, dot here and there with White

4 using a stylus for smaller dots. When dry, dot here and there with Emperor s Gold using the stylus. Rosebud Basecoat Straw for the yellow buds on the left and Lichen Grey for the white buds on the right. Overstroke with White on the dirty brush while still wet. When dry, add Charcoal veins on the side opposite the white strokes. Sweet Dreams l by Scottie Foster Queen Anne s Lace Using a brush-mix of Leprechaun + White + water, make the stems and small branches of each flower. Load the tip of the no. 4 brush with White and pounce it gently on the palette several times to open it up. Then gently pounce it on the flower for an airy look. Try to have some of the stems showing through. Add White dots to finish. Heart Vase Basecoat with two smooth coats of Gypsy Rose, allowing it to dry in between. After the second coat, double-load Gypsy Rose + White and make one long stroke from the top down the side. Then turn the heart around and pull a stroke from the base upward, blending the strokes together. Reload and make two more strokes on the other side. When dry, outline the outside with Emperor s Gold. Outline the inside with Charcoal. Optional: Using a short liner brush, paint words of your choice with Cadet Blue. If you prefer not to have a word, just paint a flower in the center of the heart. Dot Daisies On the heart, using the stick end of a large brush, dot the centers with Cadet Blue and the petals with Blue Spa. When dry, dot White with a stylus around the centers. On the border running along the sides of the box and in the corners of the lid, paint the daisy centers Straw and the petals Blue Spa, applying White dots when dry. Stems Brush-mix Leprechaun + White (1:1) with liner brush, adding enough water to create an inky consistency. Paint all stems and the calyx around the rosebuds. With a liner brush, add a thin line of White to the outside of the calyx and Charcoal next to the bud. Leaves Double-load Leprechaun + White and paint all leaves. Some are wide rose leaves, some are S-stroke tulip leaves and the rest are plain comma-stroke leaves, all double-loaded and pulled toward the

6 Sweet Dreams - by Scottie Foster flowers, from tip to base. Then overstroke the large leaves and S-stroke leaves with White on one side. Outline the same leaves on the other side with Charcoal. Add Charcoal veins on the large leaves. Fillers There are three White dots here and there around the design. Paint a White stroke above each rosebud. Comma-strokes beside and above the tulip and droopy daisies are Emperor s Gold. Add three Emperor s Gold dots at the base of the Heart Vase. Optional Border for Lid Cut a new, flat kitchen sponge into a 1-inch strip. Then press it into Emperor s Gold and pat it against the palette to distribute the paint across the width of the strip. Press and lift it all around the edge of the lid for a beautiful, lacy look. Quick and easy. Border for Box Bottom Trace the design, or put a chalk mark every 1½ inches or so, adjusting the measurement as needed so that the marks are distributed evenly. Paint 1-one-high Emperor s Gold comma strokes between the marks. Add several more strokes to each original stroke, making each one shorter than the one before. Add Dot Daisies Double-load Leprechaun and White strokes for leaves inside each arch. Add graduated Emperor s Gold dots and sets of three White dots above. Finishing Remove all graphite lines and varnish with Right Step Matte Varnish or spray varnish of your choice.
