2 Brushes 1 Wash Brush Liners - #1, #10/0, #18/0 Script Liner - #1 Flat Shader - #6, #8, #12 Other Supplies All Purpose Sealer White Transfer Paper Tracing Paper Pencil or Stylus Matte Interior/Exterior Varnish This design lends itself to many surfaces. The pattern looks charming on a tavern sign or slate, and can even be painted on a canvas. Do the necessary prep work to get your surface ready for painting. If using wood be sure to sand well, then cover with a coat of All Purpose Sealer. Rub lightly with a brown paper bag to smooth the painting surface. Apply two coats of Butter Cream with the 1 wash brush to the entire surface as a basecoat allowing each layer to thoroughly dry between coats. When dry, transfer leaf pattern using white transfer paper. The white graphite lines will be difficult to see but if you hold the surface at an angle to the light you will detect the lines. If we used dark graphite for this the lines would show through the washes of paint that we will be applying and not be as attractive. CORNSTALK BUNDLE Step 1 Using your tracing of the design and white graphite transfer paper, transfer the outside outline of the bundle of the cornstalks, crow and scarecrow, and pumpkins. Load the #8 flat brush with a wash of Territorial Beige and fill in the cornstalk bundle with loose, slip slap strokes. Let dry. Step 2 Load your #1 Script liner with inky Territorial Beige and draw in individual cornstalks.let dry. Step 3 - Load your #1 script liner with inky, Brown Iron Oxide and draw in more individual cornstalks. Load the #1 liner with inky-like Territorial Beige and draw in the tops of the corn stalks. Step 4 - Load the #1 liner with Territorial Beige and draw out the long flowing leaves of the cornstalks. Step 5 - Load the #1 liner with Maple Sugar Tan and highlight the cornstalk leaves and some of the cornstalk stems. Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Step 5

3 SCARECROW Step 1 - Base the scarecrow and crow in the following colors, using the brush you are most comfortable with: Crow = Black, Scarecrow s head = Light Ivory, Hat = Straw, Coat = Trail Tan, and Gloves = Dark Forest Green. Step 2 - Using the #6 flat shader sideloaded with Brown Iron Oxide, float shading around the scarecrows head with the paint edge of the brush to the outside of the head. Using the same brush loaded in the same manner with the same color, float shading on the sides and under the brim of the scarecrow s hat. Sideload the #8 flat shader with Burnt Umber and float shading under each of the arms and down the outside edge of the sides of the scarecrow s coat with the paint side of the brush to the outside of the coat. With the same brush sideloaded with the same color, float shading under the coat collar, around the pockets, and across the bottom of the coat behind the pumpkins. With the same brush and same color, float shading under collar and down the center front opening of the coat. Using #1 liner brush loaded with Dark Forest Green, paint a hatband on the hat. Step 3 - Load the #10/0 Liner with Walnut and draw in the eyes, mouth, and coat buttons. Load the #18/0 liner with Terra Cotta and draw in the carrot nose. Load the #18/0 liner with inky Crocus Yellow. Draw a thin line of Crocus Yellow across the top of the hat and another line across the top of the brim. Using the same brush loaded with the same paint, paint the straw stuffing that sticks out of the neck, sleeves, pockets and front opening of the scarecrow s coat. Sideload the #12 flat brush with thinned Burnt Umber. Loosely float the Burnt Umber in the foreground, under the pumpkins, cornstalks, and scarecrow. Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 PUMPKIN PATCH Step 1 - Base the pumpkins with Terra Cotta. Step 2 - Sideload a #6 flat float with Red Iron Oxide shading across the bottom of the pumpkins and where the pumpkins overlap each other casting a shadow (refer to step by step photo). Step 3 - Using the same brush sideloaded with a 1:1 mixture of Straw and Bittersweet Orange, float highlights on the ribs of the pumpkins. Step 4 - Sideload the #6 flat brush with Red Iron Oxide and float shading along each rib. Place the paint edge of the brush against the crisp paint edge of the rib highlight. Sideload the same brush with undiluted Burnt Umber and intensify the shading under the pumpkins. Using the #1 liner loaded with inky Dark Forest Green, paint stems on the pumpkins.
