1 Arizona Federation of Weavers and Spinners Guilds Presents Federation Day 2018 Connecting Threads Saturday, February 24, 2018 Join us for a wonderful day of sharing, education and fellowship. This year s Federation Day is jam-packed with classes, vendors, and a delightful luncheon. New this year- we are pleased to offer full and half day classes in a variety of fiber mediums. The various guilds throughout the state will be on display providing information about their guilds and members projects along with handmade goods for sale. A distinguished group of vendors have been selected offering a variety of weaving, spinning and crafting treasures for your shopping pleasure. Be sure to stick around for our exciting raffle with a chance to win one a several baskets full of crafting goodies and more! Raffle tickets will be on sale for $1.00 a ticket or six tickets for $5. Sign up for the Soup & Salad Luncheon and hear our guest speaker, world renowned weaver, Rosalie Neilson. Meet and chat with other Arizona Guild Members. Inspire and be inspired by the abundance of creativity our state has to offer. All events this year are 'a la carte', allowing you to tailor your day to make your Federation Day experience as unique as you. There is no charge to shop and peruse the guild displays. 2 Location and Directions The Radisson Phoenix North (soon to be a Hilton DoubleTree Hotel) will once again host Federation Day The hotel has an easy to access location off the I-17 Freeway. The newly remodeled hotel features spacious lobby gathering areas, complimentary parking and free Wi- Fi. The hotel is providing a limited block of rooms for the night of Friday, February 23rd at a special rate. Call the event planner, Evelyn Morales' office to make your reservations. 3 AZ Fed Day Class Schedule Saturday, February 24, 2018 MORNING CLASSES Faux Boucle Spinning with Mohair Locks Class Price $15 Instructor: Ruth Greenspan 8:30 am 11:30 am In this journeyman-level class, those spinners who already know how to operate a spinning wheel will learn to make a boucle-like yarn out of dyed mohair locks and a binder yarn. Expert status on a spinning wheel is not required. The $15 materials fee covers the mohair locks, binder thread, bobbin, and instructions for wetfinishing at home. Spinners should bring their own spinning wheel in good working order, a lazy kate, two bobbins, a hand towel and a large paper grocery bag. Limited to 10 students
4 Card Weaving for the Beginner Class Price $15 Instructor: Winnie Johnson 8:30 am 11:30 am You can learn to do card weaving to make belts, ties, or other long, narrow strips of fabric, even if you can t spell card weaving! This time-honored art is also called tablet weaving. In this class, you will learn to make a simple design and then see how, in the hands of an expert, one can create some fascinating and complex patterns with cards. Bring your enthusiasm and a sense of fun to the class. The $7 materials fee covers the cost of the cards and the yarn. Bring your own cards, if you have them, and the cost will be reduced accordingly. Limited to 12 students.
5 Shawl Pins Class Price $15 Instructor: Michelle Mattingly 8:30 am 11:30 am In this class students will create one of kind shawl pins using beads, ribbons and found objects. They will learn how to use jewelry findings, stringing beads, wrap found objects and attach pieces to shawl pins. Each student will be able to finish at least two shawl pins in class with enough materials to complete two more if they desire. Bring a good attitude and a willingness to learn. The $15 materials fee covers jewelry findings, found objects, beads, and ribbons. Jewelry tools will be provided in class for students to share. (Photo credit: Ro Bruhn) Limited to 10 students.
6 AFTERNOON CLASSES Yarn Feathers and Stick Wrapping Class Price $15 Instructor: Gary Terlisner 1:30 pm 4:30 pm Create awesome yarn feathers to decorate or accent a woven piece, basket or whatever your desire. Using a simple wrapping technique and floral wire you will create unique textural feathers to take home and complete by soaking in liquid starch. In addition, learn to wrap yarn around wire or sticks and to tie bits of buttons, beads or other embellishments on your work in this beginner-level class. This is another great stash-buster to make a totally unique decoration for your house or office. The $5 materials fee covers the yarn and sticks you will be using. Bring a glue stick, scissors, ruler, and any embellishments you may want to use or share. Limited to 10 students.
7 Japanese Boro Technique Class Price $15 Instructor: Debbi Brunner 1:30 pm 4:30 pm Learn the history and the method for creating Japanese Boro, prevalent during the Edo period of Japan. Boro, once a utilitarian necessity and now considered an art form is used to create wall art, home décor and new clothing with the feel of the vintage pieces seen in museums and private collections. Students will work with various fabrics including Japanese kimono and contemporary yardage to stitch the layered fabric mosaic. *Students must know how to do a 'running stitch' with a hand sewing needle. The $10 kit fee will provide all supplies to experience the Boro journey. Limited to 12 students.
8 Colorful Spring Basket Class Price $15 Instructor: Wendy Webster 1:30 pm 4:30 pm In this beginner-level class, students will learn to weave a small basket using flat and round reeds. The reed will be both natural colored and dyed. The $10 materials fee will include a pan to soak the reed, the reed itself and the instructions. Bring a small towel, a ruler or tape measure, pencil, heavy duty scissors, spray bottle, slotted screw driver, clothes pins, and any other basket-making supplies you may have. Don t go out and buy any other tools until you see if you want to continue with this hobby. We will all share, if need be. (Photo credit: Montessori services) Limited to 10 students.
9 ALL-DAY CLASSES Coiled Pendant Necklace Class Price $35 Instructor: Lucy Jennings 8:30 am 4:30 pm Learn the techniques of coiled basketry to make a pendant that s fun and easy to wear because it s so lightweight! Pendants are a great way to use up those odds and ends in your fabric stash. You will learn to begin the coil, as well as the lazy, figure eight and lace stitches and how to end the coil. In the afternoon, students will add beads to the pendant. The $15 materials cost will cover a tapestry needle, macramé cord, beads and embroidery floss. Bring your own scissors. Limited to 15 students.
10 Creating a Scrumble Bag Class Price $35 Instructor: Barbara Ellis 8:30 am 4:30 pm In this class, students will build on their basic knowledge of knitting or crochet to create a scrumble free-form bag with various fibers, yarn, and ribbons. They will also learn to make flowers, domes, boullions, ruffles, and a variety of stitches to create these one-of-a-kind items. Bring your own knitting needles or crochet hooks and scissors. The $10 materials fee covers the base form for the purse, novelty yarns, ribbons and other appropriate fibers. Limited to 15 students.
11 Colcha Embroidery Class Price $35 Instructor: Ric Rao 8:30 am 4:30 pm Students will learn the Colcha stitch, a couched down technique that makes a very thrifty use of wool. The wool will be used for stitching on Osnaburg cloth as the background for the embroidery. In the morning session, students will use pre-drawn designs to embroider, while the afternoon session will be more creative. The embroidery is done without the use of a hoop or stretcher bars, but such devices may be used if desired. The $10 materials fee covers everything to get started on this embroidery technique such as tapestry needles, Osnaburg cloth, woolen yarns and handouts showing how to create various stitches and some of the history of the art form. You only need bring a hoop or stretcher bars, if desired, and the expectation of having a great time in the class. Limited to 10 students.
12 Ancient Ways of Preparing and Spinning Cotton Class Price $35 Instructor: Jill Holbrook 8:30 am 4:30 pm Travel back in time to experience ancient techniques like fluffing cotton with bows in Asia and beating cotton with sticks in the American Southwest. We will discover how to spin off the seed, finger gin cotton and spin our prepared cotton with ancient-styled spindles, all while learning a bit of history and having fun on the way. No experience as a spinner is required. The $15 materials fee covers the cotton fiber and an ancient-styled spindle. Limited to 15 students.
13 Federation Day 2018 Guest Speaker Rosalie Neilson We are pleased to have as our guest speaker this year, world renowned weaver, Rosalie Neilson. An Oregon native with a Scandinavian heritage, Rosalie loves using color and geometric design in her weavings and kumihimo braiding. As both designer and teacher, she was featured in a 2-hour DVD by Interweave Press called Rep Weave. She publishes regularly in weaving and braiding journals and maintains an active teaching schedule throughout the United States, Canada, and England. Her curiosity about unique patterns lead her to develop the 1,024 4-block symmetric motifs, in addition to the 1,157 unique 2-color patterns for the kumihimo braid structure Kongō Gumi. She recently published her kumihimo designs in the book Kongō Gumi: A Cacophony of Spots Coils Zags Lines. And her most recent book, An Exaltation of Blocks, with a toolkit of design pages and transparent overlays for exploring symmetric block design, is now available in its 2nd printing. ******************** Enjoy our wonderful guest speaker by registering for the luncheon. The Soup & Salad Luncheon menu will consist of tomato bisque and homemade chicken soup. The mixed greens come with a variety of delicious toppings and a choice of balsamic vinaigrette or buttermilk ranch dressing. Grilled chicken with rosemary, garlic and thyme, along with tuna and egg salads, seasonal fruit and berries are also included. Top off your lunch with pound cake paired with fresh strawberries and whipped topping.
