4 Instructions Post Office - Summary Requires 1 FSL Post Office Entry Front Wall with Requires 1 FSL Post Office American Flag Requires 1 FSL Post Office Entry Front Roof with Requires 1 FSL Post Office Front Wall with Requires 2 FSL Post Office Side Wall with Requires 1 FSL Post Office Back Wall with Requires 1 FSL Post Office Sign with Requires 1 FSL Post Office Roof with Requires 1 FSL Post Office Floor with Requires 1 FSL Post Office Mailbox Instructions for Post Office and Mailbox Construction Handy tips: A pair of tweezers, hemostats, stiletto or a tiny crochet hook can be extremely helpful when inserting the buttonettes into the eyelets. (Please see Photo 01 for explanation of buttonette and eyelet.) Insert the tip of the tweezers, hemostats or crochet hook into the eyelet, grasp the buttonette and pull through the eyelet. A Stiletto could be used to push the buttonette through the eyelet. The lace looks best when left fairly stiff. When the design is finished stitching, wash the design lightly so that some of the water-soluble stabilizer stays in the design. It is better to hold the lace gently and allow the water to flow through rather than working at it or scrubbing the lace. If item becomes too limp to work with, dissolve scrap pieces of water-soluble stabilizer in warm water and apply to the item to re-stiffen. Alternatively you can iron the appliqué pieces on the wrong side while applying spray starch. After ironing, spray again with starch and allow to dry completely. This will stiffen the lace pieces nicely and aid in construction. Supplies Embroidery Thread Fabric for (we used white satin for the snowy areas and ivory satin for the Post Office walls, roof and sign) Embroidery Machine Optional - tweezers, hemostats, stiletto or a tiny crochet hook PHOTO 01 Note that the base of the building has a hole meant to contain a battery operated tea light candle. Alternatively there is a hole left in the back of the building so that a standard wired Christmas light can be inserted. POST OFFICE Follow the General Free Standing Lace Guidelines (page 6) and Cut In Place Instructions (page 6) and stitch the eleven pieces required as listed in the summary above. Fold the flaps of the front entry ( ) toward the back to create a shallow U shape.to create an extended entry, attach the front entry ( ) to the front wall ( ) by inserting the four buttonettes on the front entry flaps into the four eyelets on the front wall as shown in Photo 02 (page 5). Attach the roof of the extended entry ( ) by inserting the three buttonettes on the roof into the three eyelets on the front wall just above the already attached front entry. Complete the entry roof by inserting the two buttonettes on the extended entry into the two eyelets at the front of the entry roof. 4

5 Instructions Attach one side wall ( ) to one side of the front wall (with extended entry) by inserting the three buttonettes of the front wall into the eyelets on the side wall. Attach the floor of the post office ( ) to the side wall ( ) by inserting one buttonette of the floor to the one eyelet in the center bottom of the side wall. Attach the floor of the post office ( ) to the front wall (with extended entry) by inserting one buttonette of the floor to the one eyelet in the center bottom of the front wall. Attach the second side wall ( ) to the other side of the front wall (with extended entry) by inserting the three buttonettes of the front wall into the eyelets on the side wall. Attach the floor of the post office ( ) to the second side wall ( ) by inserting one buttonette of the floor to the one eyelet in the center bottom of the side wall. Attach the American Flag ( ) to the front wall (with extended entry) by inserting the two buttonettes on the flag into the two eyelets on either side of extended entry. The flag can be placed on either side Fold side flaps back here of the entry way or you can stitch two flags and put one on each side if you wish. Attach the Post Office sign ( ) to the main roof ( ) by inserting the five buttonettes along the sign into the five eyelets located around a square of lace in the roof. The sides of the sign will need to be folded back to form a shallow U shape as was done to the extended entry. Making sure that the sign faces the same direction as the extended entry, attach the roof to the front wall by inserting the two buttonettes from the front wall into the two eyelets along the front edge of the roof. Attach the roof to the side walls by inserting the four buttonettes along the tops of each side wall into the four eyelets along the side edges of the roof. Attach the back wall to the side walls by inserting the three buttonettes of each side of the back wall into the eyelets of each side wall. Attach the back wall to the roof by inserting the two buttonettes into the remaining eyelets on the back edge of the roof. Finally, insert the final buttonette from the floor into the remaining eyelet located at the bottom center of the back wall. Your Free Standing Lace Post Office is complete! MAILBOX To understand the mailbox ( ) refer to Photo 03. The four pieces along the bottom will fold up into a square to create the base of the mailbox. The rectangle will gently curve to create the top of the mailbox. Referring to Photo 03, insert the two buttonettes on either side of the mailbox top into the corresponding eyelets. Complete the bottom square of the mailbox by folding the remaining bottom piece to complete the square and fastening the buttonette. Curve the rectangular piece down and insert its buttonettes into the remaining eyelet to create the top of the mailbox. Your Free Standing Lace Mailbox is complete! HINT: You will achieve the best look if you insert the buttonettes into the eyelets so that the buttonettes end up INSIDE the mailbox. 5

6 GENERAL FREESTANDING LACE GUIDELINES Instructions SUPPLIES: Embroidery Thread: Use the same embroidery thread in the bobbin as the needle. Needles: Use an Organ 80/12 Titanium needle for extended needle life. Stablilizer: Use water-soluable stabilizer or film water-soluble stabilizer. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS 1. Hoop two layers of water-soluble stabilizer. 2. Attach the hoop to the machine and select the design of your choice. 3. Stitch the design. 4. Remove the hoop from the machine and the design from the hoop. Trim excess stabilizer from the design. 5. Rinse away remaining stabilizer and allow it to dry. HANDY HINTS: For Stiffer Lace: DO NOT RINSE away all of the stabilizer for a stiffer lace. However, do note that the thread may appear a shade darker if stabilizer is not removed completely. If you happen to wash too much out, easily re-stiffen by diluting some stabilizer scraps in water and dipping the item in the solution. For Very Soft Lace: Cut away excess stabilizer. Remove remaining stabilizer by rinsing under warm running water until all traces of the stabilizer are gone. Note: If lace should become too limp to work with, dissolve stabilizer scraps in warm water and apply to the lace. Drying Lace: Lay lace piece with right side down to dry. This will minimize the tendancy for the lace to curl. NOTE: To stabilize your appliqué fabric and aid in stiffening the building we recommend that you back your appliqué fabric with either a fusible interfacing or a sticky backed cutaway stabilizer. Attach to the wrong side of your appliqué fabric and leave it in place as if the two layers were one while appliquéing. CUT IN PLACE APPLIQUÉ INSTRUCTIONS 1. Hoop your fabric and backing. 2. Sew the pattern/placement. PHOTO 1 3. Place a piece of appliqué fabric over the pattern/placement so that it is completely covered. 4. Sew the trim stitch/tackdown. 5. Carefully cut away the excess appliqué fabric.photo 2 6. Sew the remainder of the design and repeat for any remaining pieces. PHOTO
