1 A Letter From the President, Jeni Christensen Hello quilters! After a very long winter, we have finally returned to the land of sunshine and thunderstorms my favorite time of year. My quilting activities always suffer as I am drawn outdoors, or at the very least to household renovation projects, but it is also the time of year where I begin to panic about getting the quilt show together! We always need help with the booth (working in the booth and providing items for sale), answering questions for visitors, food for the annual meeting, and hosting our instructor and other special guests. If you are interested in helping with any facet of the show, please contact Libby Steinfeldt or me. This year is one of goals for me. Goal #1 learn how to hand quilt, Goal #2 take an online quilting class, and Goal #3 determine how, as president of IQG, I can get more member participation. Goal #1 will be accomplished sometime this fall and Goal#2 was accomplished when I took a couple of classes on piecing on Craftsy.com. For Goal #3, I plan to get another survey out to the guild members. This survey will be used to help guide the guild through the next few years by providing us with input on event preferences. I hope to have the survey ready by the quilt show. The last survey was very eye opening and I look forward to seeing what all of you have to say this time. Happy Summer! Welcome to Quilting Pathways... offering interesting places & things to see and do for people who enjoy scenic travel... and for the travel-minded quilter and companions. IQG Board Elections coming in September Open Positions Parliamentarian, Val Bonk, reports that we have four open Board positions. Elections will take place during our annual meeting in September. It s easy to look at the list and ASSUME that someone will step forward to help. What if that someone is YOU??? 1. President Elect. The duties of the President-Elect shall be, in the absence of the President or at the President s request, to perform presidential duties. 2. Program Chair Elect. The duties of the Program Chair Elect shall be to recommend dates, locations, and programs for general membership meeting once year in advance. 3. Secretary. The duties of the Secretary shall be to record and be custodian of the minutes of the meetings. 4. Parliamentarian. The duties of the Parliamentarian shall be to oversee the policy of the organization. Please consider helping us out! Contact Val Bonk, Parliamentarian, if you are interested in becoming a Board Member, lifesastitchholland@yahoo.com. 1

2 In Case You Missed It Iowa Quilter s Guild recently brought TWO national teachers to the state, with workshops in Cedar Rapids and Marshalltown. Participating in the IQG workshops is a very affordable way to take a class from a national teacher/presenter. We d love to share pictures with you from these Mary Kay s class, but everyone was so busy learning new skills, they forgot to take pictures for us! March 15 Mary Kay Mouton in Cedar Rapids Mary Kay Mouton hales from Milledgeville, Georgia. She learned to quilt at the tender age of 12. she one day fumbled her way into an entirely new approach that enabled her to foundation-piece hundreds, even thousands, of different blocks, each on its own single paper foundation. She has since published a book describing that approach, a new paper-piecing system in which a quilter works on not one, but both sides of every foundation. The book, entitled Flip- Flop Paper Piecing and published by C&T Publishing ( outlines 13 techniques. The system was developed on full-sized blocks but is a dream-cometrue for miniature piecing. Check out her website at June 28 Cindy Walter in Marshalltown Cindy Walter is originally from Traer, Iowa. She moved to California in her teens, but never forgot her roots. Now living in Honolulu, Cindy is a teacher, presenter and television show host. Most recently, she had been asked to produce several classes for Craftsy.com. Snippet Sensations, a book introducing an innovative technique developed by Cindy, was presented a 1996 PRIME- DIA book award. This contemporary quilting technique brought international awareness to Cindy, giving her the opportunity to share her ideas and techniques to quilters in Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, France, and Germany. For more information about Cindy, her books, gallery, supplies, and other offerings, visit her website at 2

3 Summer EVENT featuring Ricky Tims, Alex Anderson, and Pam Holland A message from Ricky Tims Hey everybody! I'm very excited about the opportunity to bring the Ricky Tims Super Quilt Seminar to quilters in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding region. The seminar is like quilting on steroids. I've turned up the excitement by including renown quilt celebrities and quilting experts Alex Anderson and Pam Holland! I promise, this educational event for quilters is not like any other quilting experience. You can expect to come away with more ideas and techniques than you can imagine. There is no sewing, no supply list, and no UFOs to take home. Everyone attends all sessions so you do not have to pick and choose your teachers or classes. Expect to leave the seminar with renewed confidence and enthusiasm. Over the two and a half days of the seminar you will learn lessons suited for experienced quilters, novice quilters, traditional quilters and contemporary quilters. You will learn simple, efficient techniques and explore the principles for successful original designs. If that were not enough, the seminar is loaded with projects that will allow you to try the various techniques when you get back to your sewing studio. Prepare to have your head spinning with excitement. All of the sessions are enlightening and insightful and we all do our best to keep you laughing and entertained while bringing you the best we have to offer. I'm so confident you will find this seminar to be worth it to you that I offer a full money back guarantee if you are not satisfied! Come with members of your guild or create your own mini-group. Register early and save!! I look forward to seeing you there! - Ricky July 18 & 19, 2014 Hampton Inn & Suites Cedar Rapids North 1130 Park Place NE, Cedar Rapids, IA index.html Mention Iowa Quilters Guild to take advantage of the rate for our block of rooms (as explained below, motels in this area are already filling fast for this weekend, so reserve early) Iowa Quilters Guild, along with many other guilds and quilt shops in Iowa has been invited to co-sponsor the Ricky Tims Super Quilt Seminar in Cedar Rapids July 17-19, Along with Ricky, Alex Anderson and Pam Holland will be at the Cedar Rapids Marriott (just a few blocks away from the Hampton Inn & Suites) conducting sessions at this event. 5 Fifth Annual Garden Quilt Show Returns Bigger & Better Than Ever Reiman Gardens and the Iowa Quilters Guild will be hosting the annual Garden Quilt Show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September , 2014 at Reiman Gardens on Iowa State University Campus. The three-day show will encourage the art of quilting through beautiful displays of garden-themed quilts created by talented Midwesterners as part of the show with prizes awarded by central Iowa sponsors. Guests will be inspired by the quilts as well as the living beauty through the Gardens, in the Conservatory, and within the Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing. The theme for this year s show is Garden Odyssey. Quilts hanging in the show will fall into four categories: Odyssey Quilts, Garden Quilts, Modern Quilts and UFO Quilts. The UFO Quilts category is open to IQG members only....official Quilt Contest Categories for Odyssey Quilts In 2014, Reiman Gardens will boldly go where no garden has gone before, showing the link between space, science fiction and the Gardens. Learn about the sun and stars and all the amazing stories associated with them while enjoying beautiful plants, colorful butterflies, and quirky sculptures only outer space and science fiction could inspire. To learn more about the 2014 theme year, please visit Quilts for this category will be OUT OF THIS WORLD must exhibit a space theme. This could include, but is not limited to the following: stars and planets, meteors and comets, science fiction, robots, rockets, aliens and UFOs, and time travel. Traditional quilt blocks based on space or travel (star quilts, mariner s compass, etc.) would be included in this category. Garden Quilts Quilts in this category should exhibit a garden or nature theme. Quilts must include a nature-themed design either by including fabrics which display a nature pattern (flowers, fruits, leaves, wood or trees, insects, animals, birds, rocks, water, clouds, etc.) or by creating a nature image in the quilt pattern. Quilt blocks with garden names such as: Butterfly, Lily, Flower Basket, Nosegay, Maple Leaf, Pine Tree, Tree of Life, and Pineapple would also be included in this category. Modern Quilts Quilts in this category should exhibit characteristic of the modern quilt movement. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. "Modern traditionalism" or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting. The Quilting Connection is a proud sponsor of the Garden Quilt Show at Reiman Gardens. Located in downtown Ames, the Quilting Connection has thousands of bolts of fabric, as well as a full line of Husqvana Viking sewing machines and sergers. 238 Main Street Ames, Iowa

6 2014 Garden Quilt Show Categories, continued The fourth and final category of quilts at this year s show are the UFO Quilts UFO Quilts Just ask a quilter about UFOs and you ll receive a lot of sighs and probably a few laughs. Maybe a quilt your grandmother or mother started and never finished? Well the IQG members-only category this year is UFOs of the unfinished kind. Dig out those projects and get them finished for a chance to win a great prize! To enter you will need to 1) be a member of IQG, 2) send a picture of the current state of your UFO project and the pattern you re following (can be a sketch if it s a original design) to Jennifer Bernard or Joan Gelder, and 3) include the approximate date the project was started and why it was set aside.
