1 New President s Letter Karen Willis The 2017 Quilt Show at Reiman Gardens was a brilliant success. Thank you to all who helped everything run so smoothly. I am so impressed by the generosity of our members who volunteer their time to collaborate with Iowa State University, hang the quilts, staff the IQG booth, provide security for the quilts, and manage the annual meeting. I also want to recognize the contributions of those who enter their quilts in the show! Your work provides new ideas for our work in the coming year. Your excellent workmanship provides standards for judging our efforts. Overall, the Iowa State University IQG Collaborative Quilt Show showcases some of the best talent in the state! As president of Iowa Quilters Guild for the coming year, I want to emphasize our purposes: gathering, showing and learning. Our friendships keep the guild cohesive and our activities help us grow. Join us at the Fall Retreat November 17, 18, and 19, 2017, at the Ames Holiday Inn Conference Center. There will be opportunities to work on those projects inspired by the quilt show, for talking and shopping, and for show-and-tell. See the website at iowaquiltersguild.com for details. Karen Willis Musings from the Past President Marti Klatt Many people think of January 1 as a fresh beginning... a time to start over... to make resolutions to be a better person in the new year. To me, however, that just seems like a rather arbitrary date. After all, we are just turning the page on the calendar much as we do for all the other months of the year. The real changes in our lives arrive with autumn. Vacations are over, children go back to school, swimming pools close, and we go back to more regular routines. Many of the groups and organizations I am involved with are now experiencing a rebirth with new officers and fresh agendas. It's a time when we look back at what was successful last year and what we can do to improve this year's outcomes. Personally, I've been inspecting my vast inventory of UFO's, kits, patterns, fabrics, ideas, etc. etc. Even I can see that there is no way I am going to live long enough to complete every project I currently possess... and I'm sure there are many more that are going to come home with me in the future. I obviously need to focus, set some priorities and become more productive in this next year. The Iowa Quilters Guild is starting a new year also. The new (and renewed) officers have some great plans for the coming year. I hope all of you will make an effort to be involved in as many of our activities as possible. Our shared passion for quilting is the heart and soul of our guild. Our retreats, classes, quilt show and other events are such splendid opportunities to form new friendships or rekindle and strengthen old relationships. I always come away having learned a few new things, being inspired by what others are doing, and with a renewed determination to complete some of those aforementioned projects. Hope to see you soon! 2 8th Annual Reiman Gardens Quilt Show Another Great Success Sept 15th-17th, 2017 Ames, IA The quilt show this year was down a bit in numbers of quilts, but the block challenge more than made up the difference. We had a great response to the challenge and even gained a new member (Chris Yana) just so she could participate and she won 2nd place! We will be deciding what to do with the blocks at the November retreat. We gained two other new members at the annual meeting, including Mims Henstorf, a friend of Star Ann, and Judy Proksa, a friend of Marlene s who will serve as the Program Chair Elect next year. The IQG Boutique took in $923.20, that s an increase of nearly $200 over last year. We are down to just a few items left in the boutique so this next year we will need everyone s help to restock the store for the 2018 show. If you have any books, magazines, patterns, fabric, projects, etc. that you no longer want and would like to donate them to the guild, please bring them with you to an event and drop them off with a board member. And as always, we will take new items as well. Things that go over very well are pincushions, purses/bags, unfinished quilt tops, and pot holders. Vintage/ antique items also go very well. The big event of the show was the offer by Stephen Coon to shoot a short film about IQG for viewing on YouTube. Marti and Marlene graciously accepted the challenge of being interviewed and did a fabulous job. The video is now available and it is wonderful. Please look for it on our Facebook page or on Stephen Coon s YouTube channel. The Gardens had a fabulous turn out over the weekend. The quilt show continues to be their most successful event and they are grateful to have IQG as a partner. This relationship continues to pay off for IQG and is becoming easier and easier to put on each year as we gain knowledge and develop best practices for the hanging of the show and coordination of the booth and annual meeting. I personally would like to thank everyone for their help with hanging and taking down the show, working the booth, and donating items. I hate to even start to mention names for fear of forgetting someone! You ladies are top notch! Next year s theme at the Gardens will be Movement. We re looking for ideas for another guild member-only challenge like the block challenge. If you have ideas, please submit them to Jeni. Thanks for another great show! 2

4 Iowa Quilters Guild 2017 Annual Meeting The Iowa Quilters Guild held it s annual meeting at Reiman Garden s on September 16, Old and new business was discussed, membership and treasurer s reports were presented and the minutes of the previous meeting were read. Outgoing officers were thanked and the new board was approved. Jennifer Bernard filled us in with information about classes for the next year. 5 Quilts of Valor Presentations The Quilts of Valor ceremonies were well attended and 8 quilts were presented; 4 on Friday night and 4 on Sunday afternoon. Ann Rehbien, the out-going National Director of QOV, and Ann Crawford, the QOV Coordinator for Western Iowa, emceed the event on Sunday, while Jeni and Libby winged it for the Friday night ceremony.
