1 A Message From Our President... Summer is here! The flowers are blooming, mulch has been spread, first crop of weeds has been sprayed (yes I'm too lazy to pull them all), and my poor sewing machine is lonely. With the short window of pleasant weather we experience in Iowa it is so hard to spend me indoors in May and June. The house projects have slowed a er a whirlwind of ac vity this winter, including upda ng my son's former bedroom into my much improved sewing room. But soon the heat will be here and we'll long to be in the air condi oning back at our machines. And that always works right into the IQG July event! This year Cindy has Glad Crea ons coming in to teach two of their great tradi onal quilt pa erns at the fabulous Hotel Patee in Perry. Info is on the website and this newsle er. Don't miss out! Then next on the agenda is the annual quilt show at Reiman Gardens. Something that is just near and dear to my heart. We've seen this show go from a few dozen quilts hanging where they couldn't be enjoyed, to an event which consistently a racts 100+ quilts hung in a pleasing manner. We're always looking for help with the event. Folks to donate snacks for the business mee ng, people to assist with the booth and white gloving, people to donate items for the booth, and people to submit quilts. Informa on on quilt categories can be found in this newsle er and on the website. This year we're going to have a scrap dive so if you have scraps to donate please let me know and we'll find a way to get them from you. If you'd like to volunteer for the show, please contact me. And once again, we need will need to fill some board posi ons this fall. The guild cannot func on without its volunteers and serving on the board is one of the most important ways you can volunteer. Most posi ons take very li le me, but the role they serve in the guild is essen al. Jill Conry has been serving as our Membership Chair a er serving as Secretary the term prior. She's elected to step down due to commitments at home and we need to fill this role asap. Membership Chair is one of the most important offices on the board and we will be lost without someone to fill this role. If you are interested, please contact me or President- Elect Deb Kirby. We will also need to fill the President-Elect role as Deb moves into the role of President. And as always, we need to find the Program Chair. Libby & Jeni Construct Quilt for Little Giants Foundation Libby & Jeni constructed this quilt for a great cause. For ckets people can contact Libby or Jeni directly. Suggested dona on is $5/ cket or 5 for $20. Drawing will be Oct. 11th. Learn more about Li le Giants: h p:// li legiantsfounda on.blogspot.com/ 1

2 A Chance To Keep Janet s Legacy Alive! Janice Eifling, 68, of Ames, passed away January 16, 2015 at Israel Family Hospice House. A memorial gathering for Janice was held in April in Ames. Janice was a very active member of the Iowa Quilters Guild. She was an integral part of the IQG serving as newsletter editor for thirteen years and enjoyed participating in IQG retreats, classes, and the bi-annual quilt show. Her husband has donated some of Janice s better books & tools to IQG. Marlene Armbrecht has worked diligently pricing the items which will be on sale during our July event. The sale will be held 12-4pm on Friday and 8:30am-1pm on Saturday. Any remaining items will be sold at the Garden Quilt Show in Ames. Thanks Marlene for your effort! And thanks Janice for your treasures! We miss you. IQG Board Opening Due to some unexpected circumstances that will require more of her time and attention, Membership Chair, Jill Conry has had to resign her position effective immediately. We need someone to fill her position for the remainder of the year. A new membership chair will be elected at our Fall General Meeting. If interested in helping us out, please contact President Jeni Christensen at iqgasap@yahoo.com. Summer Event Features Glad Creations Iowa Quilters Guild invites you to our summer quilting event at historic Hotel Pattee in Perry. A sit and sew room will also be available for those not taking the workshop(s). GLAD CREATIONS WILL BE PRESENTING WORKSHOPS AND A TRUNK SHOW/LECTURE Glad Creations Where it all began. Our story began even before we had a brick and mortar quilt shop. Gladys Raschka started a cottage business called Glad Creations making custom appliqué purses in Her basement was a busy place making purses and greeting customers. As the years went on, all this activity began to outgrow her home. Meanwhile, Gladys daughter, Nancy Raschka graduated from college and developed an interest in quilting. In 1976 Gladys & Nancy decided to combine their interests and opened a quilt shop that could also handle taking orders and delivering Gladys' handmade purses and so Glad Creations, Inc. Quilt Block came into being. In 1980, Susan Dyer (daughter of Gladys, sister of Nancy) joined the team. Today Glad Creations is a thriving quilt shop still in its original location. We offer many classes on traditional quilting techniques as well as newer innovations. We take pride in our customer service and strive to help quilters of all levels achieve their goals. 2

Located in downtown Ames, the Quilting Connection has thousands of bolts of fabric, as well as a full line of Husqvana Viking sewing machines and sergers. 238 Main Street Ames, Iowa In 2015, Reiman Gardens celebrates its 20 th anniversary. All year, the Gardens will celebrate the amazing achievements of the past and look towards our future goals. Visit the Gardens throughout the year to see our festive displays featuring fireworks, punch, parties, and more. Learn about Reiman Gardens past and be inspired by what the future will bring. Interact with the Gardens in eight treehouses all honoring the Gardens, and of course the trees! To learn more about the 2015 theme year, please visit Celebrations! Quilts are often used to celebrate a milestone in our lives. Help us celebrate Reiman Garden s anniversary with a quilt made for a celebration. Quilts in this category must have been made to mark a milestone in the life of the quilter such as a birth or birthday, big win, graduation, wedding, anniversary, memorial, etc. Tell us about the celebration your quilt was made for on your registration form. *NOTE To keep the show from being inundated with t-shirt quilts the show committee wishes to limit t-shirt quilts to those which include unique piecing and custom quilting. All t-shirt quilts will be juried into the show by photograph. Please submit a photograph of your t-shirt quilt to iqgasap@yahoo.com prior to submitting registration to Reiman Gardens. You will receive prompt confirmation of acceptance or denial via shortly thereafter. The Big 2-0 The first 20 years have been amazing for Reiman Gardens and the next 20 will be even better. Celebrating the gardens and all of the creatures and plants within will never get old. Quilts in this category must include a garden theme in the design either by including fabrics which display a garden theme in the pattern or by creating a garden theme in the quilt pattern. Traditional quilt blocks with garden names such as: Lily, Flower Basket, Nosegay, Maple Leaf, Bear Paw, etc. would also be included in this category. And there s no better way for art quilters to show off their amazing talents than with a lovely garden-themed quilt! Celebrating the Past, Looking to the Future Quilts in this category will celebrate our past (Antiques) or help us look to the future (Moderns). Antique quilts will be judged against one another and Modern quilts will be judged against one another. This category will not include the typical break-outs for traditional and art quilts.
