1 From the Webmaster, Teresa Coenen This newsletter is sporting a new look. It is simpler and more streamlined, because it is drafted and ed directly from the website. As with any new initiative, I m sure there will be some bugs to overcome. President, Jeni Christensen, and I would love to get your feedback regarding this newsletter. You can either me directly: teresa@stitchintree.com, or simply click the reply button. Of course, members who receive their newsletter in the mail will not be able to use the REPLY feature. We d like your feedback as well. You can either send me an , or give me a call on my cell phone Spring Event Needs Your Registration Program Chair, Charleen Richtsmeier, is getting a little worried. Our wicked winter weather has caused many members to delay registration for the Spring Event in Cedar Rapids. She has a fine program planned with Sit and Sew, presentations from local quilt shops and designers, and a trunk show and workshop delivered by national quilt teacher, Mary Kay Moulton. Call your quilting friends and plan to attend. The registration form for the event can be found on the IQG website; download it today at or use the printed version of the registration form, found on this newsletter, page 3. Spring Event Agenda Friday March 14 Morning Agenda 8:00-8:45 sign in, get settled, meet & greet, etc. 8:30-12:00 Sit & Sew in the Wine Cellar room 8:45-9:15 In the Hideout room Announcements & Information shared by IQG board or members at large 9:30-12:00 Presentations, Demos, and 'Welcomes' by local quilt shops and fabric designer, Melissa Collins Afternoon Agenda 12:00-1:00 lunch on your own 1:00-4:30 Sit & Sew 1:00-4:30 Adventure out to the quilt shops or other points of interest in the Cedar Rapids area. Most likely, the morning presenters will offer some incentives to lure us into their shops. Or for those who prefer to gather back in the Hideout room, we will do a review of English Paper Piecing, or some very basic foundation paper piecing. Evening Agenda 5:00-6:30 evening meal on your own 7:00-9:00 Brief comments and reports from IQG members will be followed by the 'Ever Famous Show & Tell Mary Kay Mouton Lecture & Trunk Show 9:30-12:00 Presentations: Connie's Quilt Shop CONNIESQUILTSHOP@wmconnect.com A full-service quilt shop with over 4000 bolts of fabric. The Cottage Rose Quilt Shop A quilt shop where you can walk among friends, relax and be stimulated. Melissa Collins from Frond Design Studios will share about how the artists go about designing their fabrics and she may give us a sneak peak of their latest upcoming ideas and designs. Mary Kay shares an overview of her piecing system, Flip-flop Paper Piecing, and the story of how it was developed, illustrated by a Trunk Show of quilts or quilted projects. She also tells the unlikely story of how she found a publisher for her technique and became an author. 1

2 Spring Event Agenda (continued) Saturday March 15 8:30-4:30 (with lunch break) Sit & Sew Wine Cellar room 8:30-4:30 (with lunch break) Flip-Flop Paper Piecing Workshop Hideout room This class introduces a new single-foundation piecing system entitled Flip-Flop Paper Piecing. This system enables the quilter to construct a wide range of quilt blocks accurately and easily, each block on a single, undivided paper foundation. Three of 13 techniques in this system will be presented: The Basic Flip-Flop (the key to the system), Say Goodbye to the Y (the construction of a Y-seam style of block with the Y-seam eliminated), and Ring Around the Circle with Partial Seam Piecing. Each student will construct a minimum of three 6" blocks (Birds in the Air, Attic Window, and Twist) and a maximum of five (the extras being The Four Knaves and Big O). About Mary Kay Mouton Mary Kay has long loved the accuracy and speed of foundation piecing, but has been discouraged by how few blocks can be constructed on a single, undivided foundation: basically Log Cabins, Pineapples, and New York Beauties. Yearning for a new technique that would enlarge this range, she one day fumbled her way into an entirely new approach that enabled her to foundation-piece hundreds, even thousands, of different blocks, each on its own single paper foundation. She has since published a book describing that approach, a new paper-piecing system in which a quilter works on not one, but both sides of every foundation. The book, entitled Flip-Flop Paper Piecing and published by C&T Publishing ( outlines 13 techniques. One of the 13 eliminates the Y-seam (painless Attic Windows), another allows partial seam piecing on a paper foundation, and yet another presents the secret to a perfectly stitched, classic Ohio Star. The system was developed on full-sized blocks but is a dreamcometrue for miniature piecing. Check out her website at Our Location for the Spring Event is Best Western Plus Longbranch Hotel and Convention Center 90 Twixt Town Rd. N.E. 6 Ricky Tims, Alex Anderson, and Pam Holland A message from Ricky Tims Hey everybody! I'm very excited about the opportunity to bring the Ricky Tims Super Quilt Seminar to quilters in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding region. The seminar is like quilting on steroids. I've turned up the excitement by including renown quilt celebrities and quilting experts Alex Anderson and Pam Holland! I promise, this educational event for quilters is not like any other quilting experience. You can expect to come away with more ideas and techniques than you can imagine. There is no sewing, no supply list, and no UFOs to take home. Everyone attends all sessions so you do not have to pick and choose your teachers or classes. Expect to leave the seminar with renewed confidence and enthusiasm. Over the two and a half days of the seminar you will learn lessons suited for experienced quilters, novice quilters, traditional quilters and contemporary quilters. You will learn simple, efficient techniques and explore the principles for successful original designs. If that were notenough, the seminar is loaded with projects that will allow you to try the various techniques when you get back to your sewing studio. Prepare to have your head spinning with excitement. All of the sessions are enlightening and insightful and we all do our best to keep you laughing and entertained while bringing you the best we have to offer. I'm so confident you will find this seminar to be worth it to you that I offer a full money back guarantee if you are not satisfied! Come with members of your guild or create your own mini-group. Register early and save!! I look forward to seeing you there! - Ricky July 18 & 19, 2014 Hampton Inn & Suites Cedar Rapids North 1130 Park Place NE, Cedar Rapids, IA index.html Mention Iowa Quilters Guild to take advantage of the rate for our block of rooms (as explained below, motels in this area are already filling fast for this weekend, so reserve early) Iowa Quilters Guild, along with many other guilds and quilt shops in Iowa has been invited to co-sponsor the Ricky Tims Super Quilt Seminar in Cedar Rapids July 17-19, Along with Ricky, Alex Anderson and Pam Holland will be at the Cedar Rapids Marriott (just a few blocks away from the Hampton Inn & Suites) conducting sessions at this event. 8 Fifth Annual Garden Quilt Show Returns Bigger & Better Than Ever Reiman Gardens and the Iowa Quilters Guild will be hosting the annual Garden Quilt Show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September , 2014 at Reiman Gardens on Iowa State University Campus. The three-day show will encourage the art of quilting through beautiful displays of garden-themed quilts created by talented Midwesterners as part of the show with prizes awarded by central Iowa sponsors. Guests will be inspired by the quilts as well as the living beauty through the Gardens, in the Conservatory, and within the Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing. The theme for this year s show is Garden Odyssey. Quilts hanging in the show will fall into four categories: Odyssey Quilts, Garden Quilts, Modern Quilts and UFO Quilts. The UFO Quilts category is open to IQG members only....official Quilt Contest Categories for Odyssey Quilts In 2014, Reiman Gardens will boldly go where no garden has gone before, showing the link between space, science fiction and the Gardens. Learn about the sun and stars and all the amazing stories associated with them while enjoying beautiful plants, colorful butterflies, and quirky sculptures only outer space and science fiction could inspire. To learn more about the 2014 theme year, please visit Quilts for this category will be OUT OF THIS WORLD must exhibit a space theme. This could include, but is not limited to the following: stars and planets, meteors and comets, science fiction, robots, rockets, aliens and UFOs, and time travel. Traditional quilt blocks based on space or travel (star quilts, mariner s compass, etc.) would be included in this category. Garden Quilts Quilts in this category should exhibit a garden or nature theme. Quilts must include a nature-themed design either by including fabrics which display a nature pattern (flowers, fruits, leaves, wood or trees, insects, animals, birds, rocks, water, clouds, etc.) or by creating a nature image in the quilt pattern. Quilt blocks with garden names such as: Butterfly, Lily, Flower Basket, Nosegay, Maple Leaf, Pine Tree, Tree of Life, and Pineapple would also be included in this category. Modern Quilts Quilts in this category should exhibit characteristic of the modern quilt movement. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. "Modern traditionalism" or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting. 8

9 2014 Garden Quilt Show Categories, continued The fourth and final category of quilts at this year s show are the UFO Quilts UFO Quilts Just ask a quilter about UFOs and you ll receive a lot of sighs and probably a few laughs. UFOs to a quilter is not an Unidentified Flying Object, but rather an Un-Finished Object. One of those things you started at a class and never finished perhaps? Maybe a quilt your grandmother or mother started and never finished? Well the IQG members-only category this year is UFOs of the unfinished kind. Dig out those projects and get them finished for a chance to win a great prize! To enter you will need to 1) be a member of IQG, 2) send a picture of the current state of your UFO project and the pattern you re following (can be a sketch if it s a original design) to Jennifer Bernard or Joan Gelder, and 3) include the approximate date the project was started and why it was set aside.
