1 Anderson COUNTY Piecemakers Quilt Guild Newsletter VOLUME 11, Issue 9 May 2017 PRESIDENT Evelyn Smith SECRETARY Joan Beard CO-VICE PRESIDENTS Sharon Sims & Mary Lowery TREASURER Betty Jo Moss NEWSLETTER Clara Tingle MEMBERSHIP Clara Tingle LIBRARIAN - Rebekah Roberts & Hannah Roberts REFRESHMENT CHAIR Dixie Willing AROUND THE BLOCK: 1 Evelyn Smith Guild President Hello Quilters, What Beautiful weather we are having. I bet you ve been out in the yard and flower beds working. Now is a busy time. I hope you take a little of it for yourself if nothing else go sit on your porch or patio and relax and maybe read a book or watch the birds. I hope you ve had you sewing machines running. It s Spring Cleaning time so make it time to Spring Clean your sewing machines and Lord help us our sewing rooms. It s about time for another all-nighter or part of a night. We will discuss this at the next meeting. Hope to see you there. P.S. Don t spend too much at the Paducah show. NEXT MEETING: Sharon Sims & Mary Lowery Co- Guild Vice Presidents This month, Sharon Sims will be sharing how to make a small bowl suitable for use at parties and receptions. SECRETARY S REPORT: Joan Beard - Secretary The Guild Board met at 6:00 PM. Upcoming events and ideas were discussed. At 7 PM, President Evelyn Smith called the regular meeting to order. Peggianna Miller provided delicious refreshments for the meeting. Betty Jo reported that several charity items were turned in at Quilters Day Out: 21 Pillow cases, 7 children s quilts, 4 NICU sheets, 5 Lap Quilts. We now have permission to hang a quilt in the large meeting room. We need to puchase a rod to hang it on. A motion was made by Faye Green and seconded by Mary Lowery to purchase the rod. Officer election will be held in August and the new officers will take over in September. There are three offices that need to be filled this year: President, Vice-President and Treasurer. Per our by-laws, a member can serve in office for 2 years before they have to step down. However, they have be elected for a different office. Please consider serving as officer. Discussion was held concerning the block of the month that Clara places in the newsletter. Because most of us don t get the mailed newsletter until the Saturday before the meeting, Therefore, the block in the newsletter will be due the following month. Sharon need ideas to teach (30-40 students) in her sewing class. The ideas must be simple because they are done by hand and not machine. The Burgoo Festival will be September 22, 23 & 24. There will be a quilt block contest again this year. Submit a 12½ block pertaining the the Burgoo Festival Theme. There is a $75 prize. There will be a quilt show again this year at the Presbyterian Church September 23.

3 MAY BIRTHDAY GREETINGS to: Jackie Sims 5/1 Marilyn Prophet 5/9 Roetta Walls 5/22 Kay McDaniel Hayes 5/26 Joyce Cox 5/29 THOUGHTS AND PRAYER LIST: Amelia Sparrow s Husband, Tommy is very ill with cancer. Amelia was a founding member of the Piecemakers Quilt Guild. Miss Polly Stamper does not have cancer. She feels tired a lot. Opal Phillips (from the Senior Center) is also very ill. Connie Pigman s Mother-in-Law recently died. She was well known by some of our Mercer county friends. 4 MORE ABOUT THE FLOWER OF SPRING: I wanted you to see what a full Flower of Spring Quilt looked like. Notice that the flower center and the leaves are same color in all the blocks, but the flowers are different colors. One other quilt I have seen of this pattern had a yellow center and different shades of purple for the flowers from very light to very dark. I have been thinking about making a seasonal wall hanging with light yellow for spring, purple for summer (Althea), orange for fall, and bright red for winter. ~Clara BLOCK OF THE MONTH: I had trouble deciding on a block for June. I thought about what makes June special. It has Father s Day, Flag Day and Summer Solstice. I found the Summer Nights block in a book I have and hope you like it. If you want to want to make it for Father s Day, use his favorite color. Using red, white and blue could also used for Flag Day. Or make it to resemble the North Star. Most of all have fun with it. I am making this block using some night sky fabric for the background with the star a white blender for a Summer Night North Star. This block will be due at the June meeting. ~Clara 4
