4 4 JULY MEETING MINUTES Dallas Gem & Mineral Society General Meeting Plano Rd. Suite 104 Dallas, TX July 18, 2017 Called to order by Jonnie Goodwin because club president, Steven Beuhler, was absent at 7:10 pm. Darrell Harrison spoke about the show, and Harold Bowers talked about the club s annual Colorado trip. I passed around signup sheets for different committees in the club. Presentation: Nona Batiste from TCU took the floor at 7:30 pm. Ms. Batiste did a fascinating presentation about meteorites. She passed around iron meteorites, tektites with glass centers, and more. We discovered that Texas is ripe with meteorite specimens. Nona gave us all flyers to the museum where she works and her business cards as well. The presentation ended at 8:10 pm. Then the members broke for the potluck supper. We reconvened at 8:45. Then we voted in new members Jordan Fayo and Chris Zirtman. Nancy won the door prize a quartz cluster then we did the raffles for rocks. Announcements: 1. The next faceting class will be on Thursdays in September. Meeting was adjourned at 9:00 PM. Attendance: 18 members signed in 4 visitors Raffle income: $86 Minutes submitted by Sean Neeley

9 9 Silver comes from the Anglo-Saxon word seolfor. It was one of the first metals that ancients discovered, going back as far as 5,000 BC. Silver is a significantly shiny metal, making it ideal for making mirrors and telescopes. It s also germicidal, killing harmful bacteria. Mexico is the world s leading silver exporter; Peru comes next. Silver s symbol on the periodic table is Ag.

14 14 August s birthstone is peridot. Leos and Virgos share this bright, olive-green mineral that s the national gem of Egypt. Ancients mined this stone as early as 1500 BC. Areas near Topazo Island (now Zabargad or St. John s Island) in the Egyptian Red Sea were the ancient people s main peridot source. It was once thought that some of Cleopatra s gems were emeralds, but they were peridot. The Roman authority Pliny the Elder believed that wearing peridot on the right arm protected the wearer from nightmares and the evil eye. Other schools of thought credit the mineral with evoking a cheerful mood and attracting love. Europeans returned from The Crusades with peridot to decorate church plates and robes.
