1 Sedona Red Rocking News Sedona Gem and Mineral Club PO Box 3284, Sedona, AZ General SGMC meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Sedona Library, 3250 White Bear Road January 7, 2018 Volume 65, Issue 1 Member: American Federation of Mineralogical Societies Member: Arizona Coalition of Rock Hound Clubs Newsletter Editor: Galen Worthington gaviator47@yahoo.com President s Message Mark Moorehead I hope you enjoyed the holidays with family and close friends. Welcome back to a new year full of exciting opportunities to surround yourself with like-minded rock hounds in the pursuit of your passion. We will venture out together to two of the best Gem and Mineral shows in the country, and treasure hunt for that special rock specimen you ve been looking for on field trips and enjoy monthly meetings where we learn what the experts have known for decades. Along the way, do yourself a favor, seize the moment and take one of our classes to acquire the basic skills that will assist you in expanding a hobby you love. January offers you a chance to travel to the Gem Show in Quartsite with fellow club members or by yourself whichever you prefer. There are bargains galore. February is our annual club trip to the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. Experienced club members will save you a lot of time and money by directing you to specific show venues and trusted vendors you ll appreciate. See additional information about these two shows in the rest of this edition of the Sedona Red Rocking News! While I m excited about our new year and working with our wonderful, dedicated board members I have one bittersweet news flash to report. Our extraordinary Newsletter Editor Galen Worthington has accepted a position as Director of the Winslow Public Library. He has graciously agreed to continue producing the newsletter for the time being. We wish Galen all the success he deserves in his new endeavor. We will miss him dearly. Please wish Galen all best when you see him. Thought for the Day from the Editor, who just returned from the Wintry Midwest: Ice can meet the definition requirements to be called a mineral, especially if it forms naturally (but probably not the ice cubes from your refrigerator)!

2 January Field Trip Information By Dave Maple & Pat McMahan The January Field trip is to the Quartzsite Pow Pow, held January 17 through January 22. In many ways this is the best rock show in the world for rockhounds. This show has hundreds of dealers that bring a wide range of rocks, fossils, minerals, lapidary equipment and more from all over the world. Our Club s Pat McMahan will have a booth set up at the QIA POW WOW. Actually Pat will have 3 booths, 418, 419 and 420. For Club Members, Pat will have an ice chest stocked with cold drinks, some chairs to rest your weary feet, and a safe place to drop off your treasures until you finish your shopping. There is an eating facility, mess hall style, food is served by the sweetest little old ladies around. As Club Members, we will drive there individually. Hotel accommodations, restaurants, parking information and more is all available by googling QIA POW WOW or Quartzsite Chamber of Commerce. Hotels should be available in Blythe, California which is a half hour drive west. Call Pat at if you have any questions. See you in Quartzsite!!! There will be a coalition field trip the second Saturday of January. See info below with all the details! Dave TRIP LEADER: Ed Lindsey CONTACT INFORMATION: sealindsey@comcast.net Cell: WHEN: Saturday, Jan 13 th, 2018 WHERE: Sycamore Canyon, off Hwy 87 MEETING LOCATION: Exit 223, off of highway 87 to Payson. MEETING TIME: 9:00 AM, leave 9:30 AM MATERIAL: Primarily Red, Orange, Yellow Jaspers. Some Jaspers and Serpentines will have Quartz veins. Serpentine and Agates have been found at this site, but are rarer. Some Cinnabar has been found here as well. There was a mercury mine up canyon from this location. This is an area with a good selection of rocks up to and larger than one-man size. It pays to be selective when collecting at Sycamore Creek. COLLECTING METHOD: Float VEHICLE TYPE: Most any car, high ground clearance is a plus. TERRAIN TYPE: Moderate Difficulty, Rocky Wash TOOLS NEEDED: Bucket(s), small digging tool, rock hammer optional DIRECTIONS: Exit Hwy 87 at Pine Mountain Rd (exit 223). Move into the left lane at about exit 221 and be ready to turn left at exit 223. If you miss this exit the next turn-around is 10 miles further on Hwy 87. COMMENTS: This is an easily accessed wash with nice material for slabbing and cabochons. We will stay until about 2:00PM so bring lunch, water and sunscreen. Coalition Member: Please wear, or have your club identification with you. You are responsible for the safety of your guests. AJR&G Members: Participants will have to complete the club orientation beforehand, wear their badges and have their membership cards punched for verification. Level parking is next to the low-bank creek, so hauling and loading rock into vehicles is relatively easy. There is a $2.00 fee for each participant.
