Use of the shop facility and tools is $2, exact change is appreciated. Please call Carol Smith if you are planning to visit the shop to make sure someone will be there to open it. 3 Presidents Message October 2016 I m back and barely upright after a two week tour of Virginia, West Virginia, DC., Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts in September...and only two rock shops that I could find in all those states. (Our November program will be about garnets, hint.ct. State rock is garnet!) Our usual November member gift sale has fallen short of all our expectations the last couple of years, se we have deleted it for our program calendar. Instead there will be a program about garnets. Please, anyone who has garnets from anywhere, rough, in jewelry, whatever ], bring them to the November meeting for a show and tell portion of the program. Labeling them with your name, what, who, and where about your garnets will enhance the presentation. Also a short, extra entertainment talk by Carol Smith, the subject will be Rockhounding the Civil War Battlefields of Manassas, Bull Run, Harpers Ferry and Gettysburg, with interesting artifacts to ponder over. (No, I wasn t arrested or thrown in jail for my souvenirs!) Our October rock auction will be held at our Friday meeting Oct. 21st at the Fire Station. There s a variety of rocks, slabs and specimens that were donated by four different individuals. There was a rock washing party in preparation for the auction, 13 members showed up to help out! David is covering the news about the Saddle Mt. trip and Kirk is covering the Fair news and I m just covering for now.or a better description is recovering. 4 September Minutes Ginkgo Minutes Sept. 16, 2016 The meeting was called to order by Vice President, Kirk Holman. Brenda Jackson was a guest and new member, Pam Lander. The program was show & tell with many interesting finds. Ron Payne showed what he found on a trip to Oregon red & green Jasper and some Tahoma Jasper in western WA. Gunnar McDaniel has a large Ellensburg Blue Agate for sale. Janet Clark showed a couple of Idaho garnets that she had worked on a little. Nathan Clark had a nice piece of petrified wood. Marcia Summers showed what she entered in the fair. The door prize was won by Gunnar and the raffle was won by Gunnar! The minutes from August were read and approved. Treasurer, David Earhart, gave his report. $70.00 was spent on fair passes for hosts. Pat Russell treated us to a nice variety of goodies. Kirk thanked all who participated in the Chelan County Fair and made a suggestion for next year. Have one of the display cases with UV or Black Light on some minerals. Tom Payne had a nice display of the hardness scale with samples that would make a good program. No Old Business New Business: Rock washers are needed to prep for the auction and Saturday, Oct. 1, we will meet at the shop at 10:am with a pizza lunch break about noon. Good of the Order: A trip to the Cashmere Museum was suggested as a possible winter field trip. At the fair, a man gave us a lot of rocks so David E, and the Holman s went to Chelan and loaded up a pickup full. It was suggested that we have some gluten free cookies to offer when we do Nason Creek. A tentative trip to Saddle Mountain was set for Tues., Sept. 27. Someone said that gold claims also cover all gems and minerals. BLM has gem sites on the web. Cheri McMillan and Bob Spurrier thought that a trip to Lake Wenatchee for soapstone would be a good field trip. The meeting was adjourned at 8:45pm. Respectfully submitted by Secretary, Marcia Summers Chelan County Fair Report The fair went well. As usual, the donation of tumbled rock for the children, just barely made it through the weekend. At the end of the fair we only had a handful left. Thanks again to the contributors! Also, thank you all for helping out and especially the hosts that contributed their time. Our exhibit of cab grinding was a hit. We had a lot of people asking questions, adults and children alike. Last but not least was the judging. Unfortunately we only had three exhibits and they were from Marcia Summers. We really need to get more people interested in exhibiting their lapidary crafts. Please plan to attend Friday, Oct. 7pm at the Douglas County fire station on NE 3 rd St. and Eastmont. Welcome to our newest members: Dave & Pam Lander of East Wenatchee; Siri Healy family of Leavenworth and Gary & Rinda Johansen of Astoria, OR. Siri has a jewelry making business at her home. Pam spent many hours cleaning rocks with us and is looking forward to our club field trips. The Johansen s are also gold prospectors, I believe. Thirteen members washed and sorted rocks of all types & sizes for over 6 hours at the shop (Christy s home) on Sat. Oct. 1. Thanks to you all. Treasurer, David Earhart Saddle Mountain Field Trip It was shirtsleeve weather on Saddle Mountain. on Tuesday the 4 th of Oct., when nine of us went looking for Petrified Wood. Seven members, who had never been there before, were shown around by Diana Rhoades and me. Those who put up with the two- hour drive were Roy & Margie Porterfield, brothers Bill & Louis Reynolds, Nathan Clark, Pam Lander and Gunnar McDaniel. Field trips will begin next spring, weather permitting. Don t forget our rock auction during the October meeting and the Christmas Party in December. David J. Earhart Page 5
