1 BOULDER BIRD CLUB NEWS Dedicated to the Field Observation of Birds Since 1947 BBC Officers And Coordinators President Presidents Letter Where have all the birds gone? Well, it is Fall after all and that means a dearth of birds. The summer visitors have gone south and the year-round residents are busy getting ready for winter and not very visible. We ll still see juncos, kinglets, jays, flickers, nuthatches, chickadees and more down here in the Front Range. And we ve only to go as far as Allen s Park to see Evening Grosbeaks, Pine Grosbeaks and rosy finches. The birds are still there, just a little more work to find. Vice President And never fear, the ducks will be arriving soon! Not excited by ducks? They are beautiful and fun to watch and there are fewer species so they are pretty easy to learn. We ll see a lot of them for the next couple of months and then they ll be back in February for a couple of months. And the males are beginning to put on their regular plumage so identification will be getting easier. Photos The other option for winter birding is raptors. The Ferruginous Hawks have already been spotted in the area and maybe some Rough-legged Hawks will pay us a visit this year. What could be more fun than going to Barr Lake in January to see 20 or 30 Bald Eagles sitting on the ice (well I think it s fun)?
