The February meeting (members sale this month) will be held on Friday, February 9th at 7:00 PM. Everyone is welcome, including members, member guests, and visitors. We meet at the Chico Alliance Church Daycare (entrance in the back). Address: 3670 Chico Way NW, Bremerton, Washington. Elected Officers for 2017 President: Shane Schackmann (360) Vice President: Bill Little Secretary: Talena Webb-Klumper (360) Treasurer: Carolyn Richter (360) Club website: Club Facebook page: Mineralandgemsociety/ Club February 2018 Hello my fellow rockhounds! February is the members sale month, and that means bring in your collections to sell, trade, and buy from your neighbors. By the time you read this, I will be back from the Tucson gem and mineral show, which is a real highlight for any collector. The multi-show has awesome fossils, gems and minerals from around the world. I highly recommend it for anyone with interest, so put it on the bucket list for sure! Next month for March, I have ideas that I have discussed with the board which I hope to implement such as a volunteer appreciation month, or start a show and tell theme for example. If you have an idea, please contact either myself or other board members so we can bring it to the board. As often as you can, get out into the field and do some rockhounding so you can bring in your haul for show and tell. I wish everyone a great month, and thank you all for the opportunity to serve as president once again. -Shane Schackmann- KMGS President Check this link for information on the Tucson, AZ shows: The shows go until mid February, so if you are quick, and have a way to get down there fast, you can still catch some shows for this year! It looks like there are some shows in September as well. Additional information here: This year there are over 46 shows in Tucson! Wow!
F E BRU ARY Year s Schedule: G thru H Jan I thru L - Feb M March N thru R April S May T thru Z = June A thru B Sept C thru D Oct E thru F Nov PAGE 2 Program February Refreshment schedule: For the month of February, if your last name starts with I thru L it is your turn to bring refreshments! Finger foods are always best as they can easily be placed on a napkin. Please stay and help out Karen in the kitchen with set-up and clean-up. The program for the month of February is the member s sale! Members who want to sell, should contact one of the officers and reserve a table for sales. There are limited tables, but you can bring your own to sell from, just double check with the Vice or the President before you come, to make sure there s adequate space for everyone. Set up time is 6:30pm. Due to the sale, there is no raffle and no silent auction. There will, however, be a craft for the Juniors! KMGS MEMBERSHIP: YEARLY DUES SHOULD BE PAID! They are due in January of each year. If you have not already paid, please get your dues to Karen Demerick at the meeting or mail them in to: Kitsap Mineral and Gem Society P.O. Box 3342 Silverdale, WA For those that joined at the November Show in 2017, your dues are free for the year BE SURE TO CHECK IN WITH KAREN AT THE MEMBERSHIP TABLE TO ACTIVATE YOUR MEMBERSHIP. Everyone needs to keep their contact information up to date, so Karen (karendwd@msn.com) for any changes to your phone number, address, or , and CC the newsletter editor at kitsapmineralandgem@outlook.com to ensure that you keep receiving your newsletter via ! Rock Club Crafters: The craft room at Michael's Craft's in Silverdale has been scheduled for the Rock Club Crafters to meet on the fourth Wednesday of February and March, from noon to 3pm. It is a great creative place for learning creative skills and learning from the talented mentors in our rock club.
Recap of the January meeting: Our new president Shane Shackman is following in his dad's foot steps. Tony Shackman has been very dedicated serving the club as president for years. We are fortunate that Tony also serves as a representative of the Mineral Council. Volunteers for representatives to the Mineral Council are needed. It is an opportunity to meet a group of leaders from rock clubs across the state that are serious about the advancement and preservation of rockhound privileges. This is an area where an individuals action counts by increasing the active numbers of volunteers that represent our endangered hobby interests. PAGE 3 The Mineral Council field trips are posted on the mineral council website. As members we are encouraged to participate in the Mineral Council field trips. Then you can show off your treasures you find at the rock club display table and tell us about your experience. We still need someone to be our field trip chairman. There are many ways to volunteer in making our rock club more interesting such as bringing in your rocks or projects for the display table. We want to encourage youth to bring in your rocks to show off. Our goal is to increase members active participation at the meeting strutting your stuff and sharing your knowledge as a mentor or offering to do a program in the field of your field of interest. One of the privileges of membership is the opportunity to participate in special workshops, like Vangie Mayton's wirewrap group. The third Tuesday of the month from 10 am to 2 pm., members meet to work on wirewrap projects. It is a well attended event that it is good to call ahead to reserve space. -ViQ Tree Keefer At the Rock Club Crafters meeting on January 24th, AnnieLaurie brought an informational handout she had written on making your own jewery findings. She demonstrated wire work techniques and consulted with ViQ'Tree on ways to finish the necklace incorporating the rose beads that were used in making the necklace ViQ'Tree had brought for the workshop.
PAGE 4 The wire wrappers are busy again! Gary Mahan finished a couple of wire wrap pieces and assisted the three new members that attended Vangies wire wrap at January meeting. Sally Nau is one of the founding officers of the Slam Studio, which is in the same plaza as Michael's Crafts in Silverdale. The Slam Studio is an artist coop for artists and musicians. It provides studio space for creative events and does a lot of home school activities. The studio had been closed down for remodeling after a fire that had started from some linseed oil rags that were left in the utility sink. The biggest damage to the artists work was from water damage. This unexpected lesson is an important lesson of how combustible oily rags can be. Dispose of them in a sealed coffee can or jar and put them in the garbage can outside. The Slam Studio will have their grand re-opening on February 3. Check Slam Studio out on facebook, and stop by and check out their studio. meet the artists and inquire about the studio's availability for crafting events. Meet the artists and see what kind of project events they have scheduled. The artists at Slam Studio often have rock painting events for all ages. Elaine and Mary Lou were mentored in beginning wire wrap by Vangie Mayton and Garry Mahan. Something to look forward to at the membership sale are the jewelry pieces that are made by members. Garry Mahan and Mary Lou and Vangie Mayton have signed up for tables for the membership sale. It is good to let former vice president ViQ'Tree Keefer or our current vice president Bill Little know for reserving a table or bring your own table. Notifying one of the vice president will help in a better organized event. Pre-registration would be greatly appreciated. We would also appreciate volunteers to help with the set up of tables. Wire wrapper Sally Nau found these jewelry clamps as a free promotional item at: Wire jewelry.com. This gem tree was made by ViQ'Tree Keefer using a 15 gauge black craft wire to make the stand and tree's structural framework. 26 guage wire and basic gem tree skills learned from our gem tree work shops and the owl ceramic beads I got at Michael's Crafts added last. A special thanks to Bobby Sacs for donating the rocks I used to make this piece and the gem tree I donated for one of January's raffle prize. Vangie's wire wrap workshop will be February 13th, pre-registration would be helpful. Contact Vangie Mayton for a seat (360)
Field Trips - February and Beyond: Beaver Valley - February 10th, 9am - 4pm Meet up at the Visitor s Center Tony Schackmann has volunteered to lead this trip for our club, so if you missed the Mineral Council trip in January, have no fear! Contact Tony for details and to let him know you are coming. (360) PAGE 5 The following is a draft of the Mineral Council Field trips planned for the year. Be sure to contact the hosts as more information comes out so you don t miss these.
PAGE 6 Valley of Balls Mysterious spherical rocks in Kazakhstan October 26, 2016 Read more : Follow on Twitter geologypage on Facebook The Mangystau region of Kazakhstan, near the borders of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, is a huge, empty place. In total, it covers 165,600 square kilometers an area larger than England. The geography of the region varies between tundra, grasslands, epic mountains and dusty, dry barren wilderness. The size of spherical concretions is up to 4 meters in diameter. The time of origin is about million years ago. Concretion from the Latin word concretio fusion, thickening. They are round-shaped mineral formations found in sedimentary rocks, formed, for some not entirely clear reason, around grains of minerals, shells, teeth and bones of fish, plant residues, etc. How concretion occurs: A concretion is a compact mass of mineral matter, usually spherical or disk-shaped, embedded in a host rock of a different composition. This hard, round mass of sedimentary rock cement is carried into place by ground water. Concretions, the most varied-shaped rocks of the sedimentary world, occur when a considerable amount of cementing material precipitates locally around a nucleus, often organic, such as a leaf, tooth, piece of shell or fossil.
PAGE 7 Where to Rock Hunt Gems in Idaho By David Barber; Updated June 07, 2017 Idaho is known as the "Gem State" because it contains 72 different kinds of precious and semi-precious stones. Idaho gems can be found throughout the state, particularly in mining sites and stream beds. The only other location on the planet which has a greater variety of gems is Africa. Idaho's state gem is the star garnet. Throughout the state there are numerous and popular gem-hunting spots where enthusiasts can find deposits of corundum, jasper, agate, opal, garnet, topaz and zircon. Statewide Locations Explore old mine dumps where weathering and erosion expose mineral specimens, as these are good collecting spots. Statewide, the mineral corundum occurs in a variety of colors. These include the transparent red corundum, the gemstone ruby, and the blue variety, the gemstone sapphire. Corundum concentrates in placer deposits and is recovered using a screen in the same way as placer gold. Garnets also occur throughout the state in a variety of rock types. Northern Idaho Outside St. Maries, on the East Fork of Emerald Creek in the Panhandle National Forest, gem-quality almandite garnets are found in the placer gravel of the stream bed. These garnets range from purple to red in color and are significant for their stars, called star garnets. Most collectors will actually dig into the bedrock and use screens to recover these gems. To collect star garnets in the area, you must pay a small permit fee to the U.S. Forest Service. The gravel bars along Rhodes and Orofino Creeks in Clearwater County, near Pierce to the south, also contain deposits of corundum.
PAGE 8 Central Idaho You'll find corundum placer deposits in the Stanley Basin of Custer County, and in the Gold Fork tributary of the Payette River in Valley County. Between McCall and New Meadows on the headwaters of Goose Creek in the east-central part of the state there is also a corundum site, known as Rocky Flat. Look for agate nodules, with colors ranging from white, grey, to bluegrey, along Road Creek, a tributary of the East Fork of the Salmon River between Sawtooth National Recreation Area and Sawtooth National Forest. Southwestern Idaho Fire opals draw rock hounds to Squaw Butte, 50 miles north of the town of Emmett in Gem County, where cherry and salmon pink opals can be found. The best known jasper in Idaho is the "Bruneau jasper," a red and green gem-quality stone found in Bruneau Canyon located 50 miles south of the town of Bruneau in the Owyhee County. Southeastern Idaho The Spencer opal deposit is located 5 miles northeast of the town of Spencer, near the Montana border. Many opal deposits are located on the south side of Opal Mountain, but some are covered under patented or unpatented mining claims. One of the best deposits in the area is the Deer Hunt Mine, which is open for digging by rock hounds for a set price per pound.
Juniors Section PAGE 9 Hello KMGS Junior Rockhounds! The meeting in February will be the "Member Sale". It is always a fun meeting to attend. Juniors Leader, Bobbie Sack, will have a craft table set up at the sale for the junior members. We hope you will come and have a great time! Sincerely, Bobbie Sack, Jill Wetzel and Kathy Reimers, Juniors Leaders At the following site from the international gem society, there are a number of articles related to gems and minerals as well as jewelry making techniques and basics. A great way to get started in a hobby is to read about it! Check out the information and give some of it a try with the help of an adult.
