The Board of Directors meets the second Tuesday of the month at the home of Greg Capatch in Sedona. Members and guests are always welcome to attend. MINERALOGICAL SOCIETIES MEMBER ROCKY MOUNTAIN FEDERATION OF MINERALOGICAL SOCIETIES Newsletter Editor: Patti Polk rockhound_86326@yahoo.com General Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM at the Sedona Library in West Sedona. For membership inquiries, please contact Marge Schwartz at: bschwar13@msn.com MAY PROGRAM Mineralogy Along Northern Arizona s Route 66 By Anna M. Domitrovic Route 66 s eastern end was in downtown Chicago, with it s western terminus in Los Angeles, completed in This is an unique presentation by Anna Domitrovic on Route 66 s points of interest and the minerals found therein. These points of interest include Monument Valley, the Painted Desert and the uranium minerals of the Navajo Indian Reservation in northeastern Arizona. Anna is a scientist and mineralogist by profession and was the driving force of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson. She is a noted and sought after speaker in the gem and mineral world. Anna Domitrovic was born and raised in southwestern Pennsylvania. She moved to southern Arizona in 1975, shortly after receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She worked at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum Earth Sciences Center in the Mineralogy Division from She retired from the Desert Museum in September, 2005, and was appointed Earth Sciences Curator Emerita, the first emeritus appointment for the Desert Museum. Anna has previously made presentations to Sedona Gem and Mineral Club and was received with great enthusiasm. Don t miss this one-of-a-kind presentation. MAY Field Trip Our May field trip will be to Grapevine Canyon for a very desirable dark banded onyx. The trip will be headed by Garry Kappel. We will be travelling into a very pristine forested area east of Mormon Lake. High clearance vehicles will be a must as the last 8 miles of the 21 miles of dirt road is quit rough. This site is good for surface collecting with large quantities just under the surface. Bring all the tools...rock hammer, pick, sledge hammer, shovel, pry bar. We will meet at the only convenience store/gas station at the Lake Mary Rd. exit off the I-17/89A. as you go north towards Flagstaff. I believe it is a Circle K store. Meeting date: Saturday, May 25th Meeting time: 9AM. Total time to the collecting site from the meeting spot...1 1/2 hours. Should be a fun trip into the back country of Arizona. Hope to see you all there! Darryl Berghorn, Intrepid Field Trip Leader (949) (verizon cell) In addition to member displays, the May meeting will feature a silent auction of a wide variety of crystal and mineral specimens by the box. Each flat box will also have a buy it now price for those who must have it now. The meeting will close with the club raffle of some superb rock and mineral specimens. Visitors are welcome. Reminder - the club will be having a silent auction for a wide variety of crystal and mineral specimens by the box. Each flat box will also have a buy it now price for those that prefer this buying method. Terms are cash or check.

2 Sedona Gem & Mineral Club Page 2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Greetings fellow club members. I am hopeful everyone will attend the May meeting. We are having a club yard sale during the meeting in which we will be auctioning off close to a dozen flats (a flat is a boxful if you are unfamiliar with the term) of mixed mineral specimens. There are lots of unique and interesting specimens interspersed throughout the boxes, and there should be something for everyone. The format will be a silent auction, but there will be a fixed buy it now price that will be more than fair for the entire box of minerals. Ann and I are sweetening the auction by bringing in a lighted crystal display cabinet for the silent auction as well. That way you can have something to display all your newly acquired specimens in. Bring some money along - or your checkbook - so you will be able to participate in the fun. Some of us got together and sorted through most of the rocks we use for our Kid s Corner at the show. We got through most of it, but will be going out to the trailer one final time to finish the rest of the kid s specimens and completing the organization of everything else we have in the trailer. Most of it is done - but it got too hot to finish up this weekend so one more trip will be required. Hopefully you will consider volunteering to help- as many hands make light work. APRIL FIELD TRIP REPORT The DoBell Ranch coalition trip was quite a success. While only 17 members showed up, all came away with what they were there for, plenty of colorful petrified wood. Many snowbirds from Canada loaded up their vehicles and headed for our northern border. We had perfect weather for collecting and fantastic people to share the day with. Below, a photo of club member Becky Helgesen helping owner Gordon DoBell load a 300 lb er into her vehicle.. While out there, we took measurements of all the different items we bring to our show, and came up with dimensions for a show trailer. Now that we know exactly what is needed, we can proceed with its purchase. One we have it, we will need some volunteers that are handy with tools to build shelves into the unit so we can properly store our display cases, tables, flats of rocks, and all of the other numerous supplies we take to the show. Please consider lending a hand in this endeavor. We won t have a firm date for this until the trailer is on site, but will bring along a signup sheet so you can indicate your willingness to help. Once the club buys all the necessary materials, we will get together and git er done. Lastly, our club picnic is slated for Saturday, June 8th at the Posse Grounds. I have reserved four pavilions so we will have lots of room and lots of shade. Ann is working on some games for the event, and will need a volunteer to get balloons and fill them with water for the balloon toss. We will bring along mineral specimens for prizes - and are also considering a raffle as well. We have volunteers to pick up most of the food and drinks (which the club provides), and just need one more person to stop and get some fried chicken. A signup sheet will be at the meeting for the picnic, which is a potluck in which our members bring a side or dessert to supplement what is provided by the club. We get started at 10:00 AM- and usually finish up around 2:00 PM, so mark your calendar and plan to join your fellow club members for a fun filled day. See you soon. Greg Capatch MAY COALITION FIELD TRIP Field trip for Zebra agate Sponsored by the Daisy Mountain Rock & Mineral Club, near Phoenix Saturday, May 11th, 2013 Meeting time: 9:30 a.m. Meeting place: Christopher Creek loop Off highway 260, south side between Tall Pines market and Landmark at the Creek restaurant. Collecting site just east of Christopher Creek near Sharp Creek campground. (Approximately 23 miles northeast of Payson) Leaders: Lynne & Terry Dyer The Sunshine Lady If you know of anyone who needs some sunshine in our club, please be sure to contact Marge Schwartz at bschwar13@msn.com

3 Sedona Gem & Mineral Club Page 3 MAY BIRTHSTONES EMERALD Taurus (Apr. 21-May 21) and Gemini (May 22-Jun. 21) There are 15 different stones listed as birthstones for the calendar month of May, or as Sun/Star, Planetary, or Talismanic stones for the Zodiac sign of Taurus or Gemini. Because these two Zodiac signs span part of May, both are listed in this table. Birthstones for the calendar month of May are emerald, sapphire, agate, and carnelian.the Zodiac signs of Taurus and Gemini include 11 additional stones: coral, turquoise, aventurine, garnet, amber, rose quartz, tiger s eye, chrysoprase, citrine, white sapphire, and pearl. Emerald is the Modern and Traditional birthstone for May. It is also listed as a birthstone for the Zodiac signs for Taurus and Cancer, as the Planetary stone for Taurus and the Talismanic stone for Gemini. Emerald is the only stone, besides Topaz, that is listed as in all of the ancient birthstone tables. This gem is suggested as an anniversary gift for the 20th and 35th anniversaries and as an alternate stone for the 55th wedding anniversary. Emerald is the name given the green variety of beryl and ranges between 7.5 and 8 on the Mohs scale. The name Emerald is derived from the French esmeraude and the Greek root smaragdos which means green gemstone. Top quality emeralds are a deep grass green with a slightly bluish cast, but many lesser quality stones are lighter shades of green and can have a more yellowish tone. Emeralds are found in many countries, but Columbia and Brazil are the major producers and Columbia is recognized as the source for the finest stones. They are also found in Pakistan, Russia, Australia, South Africa, India, Norway, and the United States. Emeralds are brittle stones and care should be taken when wearing or cleaning them. They should never be immersed in an ultrasonic or subjected to steam cleaning. Emeralds were used as amulets to ward off epilepsy in children and thought to cure diseases of the eye. Folklore suggests that these stones will improve memory, intelligence, and enhance clairvoyance thus helping to predict future events. They are also worn to enhance love and contentment. Cleopatra prized emeralds above all other gems. ANNUAL CLUB PICNIC!
