1 White Mountain Gem & Mineral Club P.O. Box 3504 Show Low, Arizona Vol. 21, Issue started off extremely well as our January meeting was well attended. Welcome to new members: Ronnie and Kaylinn Rogers, Yvonne and Michael Gisonno, Debra Trimble, and Jon (Loren) and Maria Bills and family. We also had several guests. Many of you renewed your memberships. You are all appreciated! Anyone wishing to renew should do so by March. We look forward to our monthly outings to new areas as well as some of our old standbys and to exciting educational programs. Your Board will be meeting this month to work on the 2017 budget and it will be presented during the February meeting. Our May show announcement is already appearing on the Rock and Gem Magazine show schedule on-line. Thanks to Loren Wright, the show announcement will appear in the GPAA publication. Show information also appears on our own website and we are working on the possibility of promoting our show on more websites. Outgoing Auctioneer Bill and our new Auctioneer John are planning a trip to Quartzite soon in order to purchase new material for silent auctions. Our auctions are a huge hit as we offer outstanding specimens at low prices. As a reminder that dues are due we are enclosing a blank membership application in Rock Talk again this month. As always, if any of you have a new place for an outing or wish to offer an educational program, please contact me, Rick Olson (education) or Rick Palmer (field trips). 2 Page 2 Our newsletter is published monthly by the White Mountain Gem & Mineral Club, Inc. Any information or comments members wish to include in the monthly newsletter must be given to the editor at the general membership meeting or call the editor prior to the following weekend after the meeting. Membership dues are $15 for a single membership and $20 for a couple/family. Dues are paid the first of January each year along with a completed application form. Memberships initiated in November or later in a given year are also good for the following year. We meet the first Sunday of the month (unless it falls on a holiday) at the VFW Post 9907, 381 North Central Avenue in Show Low. Turn north off the Deuce of Clubs at Burger King. Social half hour at 1:00 pm, meeting starts at 1:30 pm. 3 Page 3 The meeting was called to order by President Rose Fowers at 1:30 PM. Members and guests were welcomed. There being no additions or corrections to the December 2016 minutes, a motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes as published. The motion carried. Treasurer Suzanne reported no income for December. Expenses were $33. Vice President Rick Olson gave a brief announcement regarding our guest speaker from the Petrified Forest National Park. Field Trip Chair Rick Palmer announced plans for the outing on January 21. We will be going east into the New Mexico border to collect invertebrate fossils and perhaps other minerals. We will meet in Springerville between McDonalds and the Dinosaur Center at 9 AM. Please dress for the weather and bring lunch and drinks. Rick Olson introduced our guest speaker Park Ranger Kip Woolford from the Petrified Forest National Park. Kip presented a program on the various wood species in the park, how they were deposited, and a geologic overview. Kip brought several brochures on the park s resources for members to take home. Announcements: January 14 field trip by the Apache Junction club. The club Board meeting on January 15, 2 PM, Show Low Café. Donation of several minerals from the club to the White Mountain Dinosaur Museum for outreach work with the Boys and Girls Club of Round Valley. Members are needed to man a booth at the Round Valley Science Expo on May 5. Flagstaff Gem and Mineral Club are sponsoring a show in early June and are looking for vendors. New member Ronnie Rogers volunteered to refurbish some of the display cabinets that were given to us by the Apache Junction club. Thank you, Ronnie! Recent club donations to the American Federation (in memory of Ruth King) and to Hidden Cove Petroglyph Park in Holbrook were acknowledged. Those letters were given to Historians Stan and Jeannie for placement in the activities binder. Rick Olson announced the Regional STEM Fair will take place on March 4 at Blue Ridge Middle School. If you are interested in judging, please contact Rick Olson. The organizers will provide training. Sandra Angelo reported on the proposed BLM collecting laws and how they could affect our ability to collect in the future. Members present unanimously agreed to support the Rocky Mountain and American Federations in their effort to object to the legislation. Sandra will submit our letter to the RMF. Show Chairman Gary Alves presented a brief report on our upcoming show publicity. Gary needs volunteers and would appreciate your call. After a short break, some great prizes were given away. Skye and Stan won door prizes Sandra won the 50/50 of $36. B.G. won a Michigan copper slab and Yvonne Gisonno (new member) won a puffy heart. 4 Page 4 Article by Rose Fowers Photos by Stan Arneklev Did you know garnets can be found in Arizona? Most garnets are a result of metamorphic activity that causes heat and pressure within other rocks. Arizona certainly has an abundance of volcanic areas. Some garnet varieties are formed in granite pegmatites. This mineral was first identified in 1868 and was named after the Portuguese mineralogist d Andrada. Five prominent types of garnets are common in Arizona. The three most common are Almandine (brown or deep red colors), Andradite (green or brown), and Spessartine (deep rich purple). The crystal structure of the Andradite Garnet is cubic and generally found as small, well-formed crystals. Andradite is a calcium iron silicate and is the most naturally lustrous of the garnets. On the MOHS hardness scale, it is 6.5 to 7. There is one locality in Arizona in which the Andradite Garnet (such as the ones in the photos) can be found - on the San Carlos Reservation in an area called Stanley Butte. However, this locality is offlimits to collecting. Some can be found in a small area in the far northwest corner of Arizona, but the most abundant and beautiful Andradites have come from Stanley Butte. Most of the current specimens for sale on the internet may have come from old collections. Anyone interested in collecting on Stanley Butte should contact the San Carlos Reservation to find out if permits may be obtained. Article by Sandra Ann Angelo, 2nd Vice President On Dec 7, 2016 the BLM released proposed regulations governing the collecting of fossils on the public lands they manage. The regulations were required to comply with the Paleontological Resources Preservation Act of These regulations impact nearly 258 million surface acres under management by the BLM, including much of ALL public land in many Western States. The text of the proposed changes may be found in the Federal Register at documents/2016/12/07/ /paleontological-resources-preservation Of the proposed rule changes, The Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies identified five issues that directly impact casual collecting. [aka Rockhounding] 1) Aligning the mission and values concerning fossil collecting between the paleontology community and PRPA. 2) Semantic clarification of invertebrate and vertebrate fossils/fossil collecting. 3) Definition of terms: Casual Collector/ing, common, reasonable amount and negligible disturbance. 4) Access to federal lands for casual collecting: permits and prohibitions. 5) Protective designations. We (all member clubs) have been asked to send a letter expressing our concerns and identifying the advantages of casual collecting. 5 Page 5 Saturday January 21 This month s outing will be to an area northeast of Springerville, just over the New Mexico border. This will provide a once-only opportunity to collect invertebrate fossils on a private ranch. We will meet in the parking lot between McDonald s and the Dinosaur Museum on US60 in Springerville at 8:45 AM and depart at 9:00 AM. From there we will caravan to the site. The rancher has requested that we do not remove any Native American artifacts that we may find. The road in may be a bit rutted and high clearance vehicles are needed. Bring lunch, chairs, chisels, rock hammers and collecting bags. Please RSVP if possible to Rick Palmer at (evenings only). We don t want to leave you behind! Saturday February 25 Petrified Forest special tour. Rose Fowers will be leading the trip for an opportunity to join a Park Paleontologist who will take us where tourists cannot go. Details at the February meeting and in the February Rock Talk. This adventure will require reservations and the payment of the park entrance fee. Saturday March 18 Long day trip to the Safford area to collect fire agates/chalcedony. Saturday April 22 Private tour to Hidden Cove Petroglyph Park, Holbrook. We may proceed to Dobell s for anyone wishing to purchase colorful petrified wood. If you know of any new collection areas for future trips please contact Rick Palmer.
