1 Sedona Red Rocking News Sedona Gem and Mineral Club PO Box 3284, Sedona, AZ General SGMC meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Sedona Library, 3250 White Bear Road February 7, 2017 Volume 64, Issue 2 Member: American Federation of Mineralogical Societies Member: Arizona Coalition of Rock Hound Clubs Newsletter Editor: Galen Worthington gaviator47@yahoo.com President s Message February is one of our most enjoyable rock shopping months of the year. Tucson hosts what is billed as the World s Greatest Treasure Hunt, with the mammoth Tucson Gem and Mineral Show in progress through Feb. 12. Our club makes its annual pilgrimage to this fabulous show Feb. 8 through 10. As he s done is previous years, author and agate authority Pat McMahon graciously offered to be our guide. Prior to meeting club members on Feb. 8, Pat spends many days at the Tucson Show, scouting dealers and specimens, and narrowing down the best dealers and prices for your shopping pleasure. He s also secured economically priced hotel accommodations close to the show and identified a few good restaurants for those attending. It s a great social affair for everyone who participates. Thanks Pat! Even if you re not planning to buy anything you should still come. It s fun, visually stimulating and educational to tour the vast venues at the greatest gem See President s Message, Page 2 TUCSON GEM AND MINERAL SHOW FIELD TRIP! 2 President s message continued from page 1 show on Earth. If you can t go Feb. 8 through 10 and wish to see the show before the 8 th or after the 10 th, check with me, and I ll look at my list of those wanting to car pool down for a day trip. We ll make every effort to help if we can. As I noted in January s message, I m interested in improving our meetings and asked for your input. Last month a few of you told me you wanted healthier snacks and beverages. However, I did not receive any specifics. Please let me know what type of items you would like to see. Also, if others could chime in and offer suggestions, we ll have more of a consensus. I m not promising any dramatic changes to our small refreshment offerings, but if we can we will make improvements. Keep in mind, too, if suggested items are perishable, we may require more volunteers and would appreciate your assistance. As a reminder, our next meeting is on Tuesday, Feb. 21. We need more of you to bring your cool rocks to display at our meeting. You receive three raffle tickets for doing so what a deal! Finally, we still need a social chair. I know there s someone out there willing to take on this task. Don t be shy, we need you and appreciate your willingness to help. And, it s a great way to connect with other club members and get to know them better. Call, text, or see me at the meeting. Thank you all. Mark Moorehead SG&M Club President Meet Member and 1 st Vice President: Evelina Dunton by Marge Schwartz I have been working with Evelina on the Board for several years and I am impressed with the quality of speakers she is able to have speak to us. She came to Sedona in March of 2006 after the death of her husband. They had visited Sedona a few times and fell in love with the beautiful red rock mountains. Looking for some relief from the ever-increasing congestion in the Bay Area, she went house hunting and bought a newly constructed home. The moving van was a half block long packed with furniture, a vintage T-Bird auto, books, plants, two cats and a lot of rocks. Since moving companies charge by weight, the books and rocks were precious cargo. She first learned of SG&MC through the newspaper and the club was described in a packet given to her by the Title company. She decided to check it out. Says Evelina, I have been a member nine years and enjoy all the comradery and, of course, the opportunity to pursue my passion for rocks. I love the field trips and going to the shows but have only gone to a few of them for lack of transportation. See Meet a Member on Page 4 Sedona Gem & Mineral Club Newsletter - Page 2

3 Tucson Field Trip, Continued from page 1 This will be a great opportunity to see highlights of the Tucson Shows. What to collect: This is the biggest and best rock, mineral and fossil show in the world. People travel many thousands of miles to come to this event. It s almost in our backyard (about 3 ½ hour drive from Sedona). Guaranteed lots of fun. About 20 club members went last year and had a great time. Last year there were 43 shows. There should be enough rocks and jewelry for all of us. If buying, bring lots of money and a spending limit if you are good. also a good time to borrow extra money from your kids! There are lots of places to spend it. Additional information: Hotel accommodations can be made at the Best Value Inn, 818 E. Benson Highway, Tuscon. Call Reserve a room for Wednesday night, February 8, and Thursday night, February 9. Cost per room is $59.99 plus tax for a 2 double queen bed or 1 king bed room. Please tell the hotel staff you are from the Sedona Gem and Mineral Club to receive the negotiated discount rate. Pat McMahan will furnish free directories and other free guide books which give information about the shows. These directories will be available for you to pick up at Amy Koba s house at 85 Ross Rd, Sedona (Hwy 89A to Northview south one block to Ross then west on Ross). They will be outside by her front door, Friday, Feb 3rd. Take one of each of the different guides. A general will go out when they are at her house. If you have questions, contact Pat McMahan at or Dave Maple at Sedona Gem & Mineral Club Newsletter - Page 3

4 Meet a Member continued from page 2 I especially look forward to the Tucson show the greatest show on earth. I made a beautiful turquoise ring under the guidance of George Nielson. I grew up in the deserts of Las Vegas (NV) where we had miles of hunting grounds. I looked for pretty rocks most of which were flint fragments. I found arrowheads, scrapers and even a hatchet head. My first rock was a very colorful piece of flint. I also found fossil rocks; that area of the continent was totally underwater at one time. I love to collect crystals and minerals the showier the better. I incorporate rocks as part of home décor where I can admire them. I took geology classes at University of Nevada, Reno where I learned more of fossil collecting than rocks. At Moss Beach in northern California, I found many fossils including the socket portion of a radius bone of a prehistoric walrus of the Pleistocene epoch, four million years old, and quite a few bi-valve mollusks (clams) and other fossils. I took the radial bone to the USGS in Menlo Park where they urged me to donate it to the Smithsonian - which I did. They did make me a replica of the bone for my personal collection. Moss Beach was protected as the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve and I donated some fossils to the ranger station there and was cited in the book Natural History of the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. This area was wonderful for fossil and rock collecting. I have been honored to visit with Evelina to see all her treasures. Evelina has a green thumb as well and her back yard is full of fruit trees and roses. Some of you have had preserves I made from her fruit as thank you gifts for being on the Board. Evelina has renewed her commitment to find interesting speakers for our meetings so be sure to check out the notice in the newspaper and newsletter to see what is coming up next. 7 January Quartzite Field Trip Was Awesome! Above: Nancy Maple teases the local T-Rex, tsk, tsk. January's field trip was in Quartzite, where the town was hosting a large rock and gem show. This was a nice warm up for the big one in Tucson. Clouds and occasional rain kept the sun from showing off all the colors that my camera and I were hoping to capture, so I'll just add these to my Tucson pictures and will have a very interesting slide show for everyone at February's meeting. Quartzite has a greater amount of small vendors, along with a strong mix of non-rock and mineral vendors. The cloudy weather aside it was an enjoyable day for Nancy and me. It was nice coming across some SG&MC members, Mike Read and George Nielson, and we found Pat McMahan having a successful sell day for his wonderful agate book. February's outing will be the Tucson Show, and we hope to see lots of our members there. Remember that if you do go, be sure to wear your Club pin.
