1 Sedona Red Rocking News Sedona Gem and Mineral Club PO Box 3284, Sedona, AZ General SGMC meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Sedona Library, 3250 White Bear Road October 7, 2016 Volume 63, Issue 2 Member: American Federation of Mineralogical Societies Member: Arizona Coalition of Rock Hound Clubs Newsletter Editor: Mark Moorehead fifthestate23@gmail.com Don t miss fabulous Sedona Gem & Mineral Show! Spectacular mineral specimens, rare fossils, sparkling crystals, striking custom jewelry and so much more has been gathered from around the World for your personal treasure hunt at the 17th Annual Sedona Gem and Mineral Show. The event, which hosts over 40 vendors, is held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at Sedona Red Rock High School on Upper Red Rock Loop Road in West Sedona. Rock hounds will appreciate the show s wide variety of rough and polished gem stones, dazzling jewelry designs and materials available to make their own jewelry. Plus, a new trademarked mineral called Sedona Sunrise will be on display. This local deposit of pastel picture stone has been made into finished pieces by a local jeweler and is ready to wear. If you prefer to do it yourself, you can purchase rough rock that is ready for cutting and polishing. See Show, Page 2 October field trip FYI Due to the annual Sedona Gem and Mineral Show, as well as conflicts with other events, Field Trip Leader Dave Maple says the October field trip may be postponed. However, depending on membership interest, there is a possibility of an Oct. 22 or 29 outing. Please come to the Oct. 18 General Meeting to discuss the option. Marge Schwartz Autumn is finally here, so rock hounds are ready to get back in the field. Dave Maple is busy planning some great fieldtrips. More details for signing up will be available soon. As you know, our big Sedona Gem and Mineral Show is just before our Oct. 18 General meeting. Give me a call if you See President s Message, Page 6 Sedona Gem & Mineral Club Newsletter - Page 1
2 October meeting offers gemstone cutting, polishing by Evelina Dunton Prescott s Keith Horst will present a slide show on his lapidary talents at the Sedona Gem and Mineral Club s Oct. 18 meeting, held at 7 p.m. at the Sedona Public Library, 3250 White Bear Road in West Sedona. His presentation includes rock cutting and polishing of gemstones, as well as illustrating techniques used in making cabochons and other unique specimens. Horst became interested in rocks as a youngster when he and his father would find petrified wood in Colorado s Black Forest area. He is a founding member of the Prescott Gem and Mineral Society and has over 40 years experience as a professional lapidary. Horst and his son, Alex, own A&K Gems and Minerals in Prescott, where they feature their jewelry and gemstones. Their gemstones have sold and been used in jewelry across the globe. Horst shares his extensive knowledge of lapidary by teaching lapidary art classes at Yavapai College. In his 16 years of teaching, he has introduced many new students to the art of lapidary. Horst and his son will have a booth at the Sedona Gem and Mineral Show on Oct. 15 and 16, where you can see their displays and get more insight on their special techniques. The meeting will feature member displays and close with the monthly raffle of fine rock and mineral specimens. The money raised by the raffle goes toward student scholarships. Show from Page 1 Attendees have a chance to win valuable gem and mineral specimen prizes during the hourly raffle held both days. The spectacular grand prizes will make some lucky ticketholders very happy at the end of the show on Sunday. Winners do not need to be present for a grand-prize win. However, they do need to be at the show for the hourly drawings. All hourly drawing tickets not chosen are entered in the grand prize drawings. Proceeds from the show provide scholarships offered to deserving Sedona Red Rock High School seniors. Visit the club s membership table to see showcases of specimens displayed by club members, many of which were found on club field trips. Members are encouraged to have their friends and neighbors pick up applications to join the club so they, too, can enjoy club excursions. Children in attendance will love The Kids Adventure, a free activity where kids receive a rock collection of 12 interesting minerals as part of a handson experience. The show is open to the public, and parking is free. Admission is $3 for adults; children younger than 12 and club members wearing their badges get in free. Food and beverages are available for purchase. Sedona Gem & Mineral Club Newsletter - Page 2
3 Meet Sedona G&M Club member Pedro Jimenez III by Marge Schwartz Pedro Jimenez III and I have visited on many occasions, so I thought I would share some of his stories. Pedro Jimenez III, left, shown with Tom Helgeson at the 2015 Sedona Gem and Mineral Show. Jimenez and his family moved to Sedona a few years ago from New Mexico. After joining the Sedona Gem and Mineral Club, he showed me his amazing mineral carvings and intricate inlay work in which he uses a variety of colorful minerals to produce beautiful Kachina statues. He began collecting rocks and coins at a young age. At 13, he started carving broomsticks to make Tikis carvings, not unlike the Moai heads found on Easter Island. When asked what his first cherished rock find was, I was surprised to learn it was deep blue lapis. While growing up in Peru, Jimenez started carving minerals, but preferred to polish stones rather than lacquering them, as is the tradition in Peru. He loved carving and polishing aragonite, blue opal and sugilite, much to the surprise of other local carvers. Never one to shy away from new challenges, Jimenez and a friend carved eagle statues with wingspans over 3 feet! Jimenez has many Native American friends in the United States and was welcomed to participate in their ceremonies. A great honor was bestowed on him in an Apache ceremony, where he was given the name Blue Elk. As a Brother of these wonderful people, he found his inspiration to carve the Kachina figures seen in ceremonies. He sold his creations at Indian Markets and continues to do so today. The Jimenez family joined our club after meeting member John Brown and talking to him about minerals. Pedro and his lovely wife, Edith, are parents to our youngest member, 6-year-old Pedrito. Enjoy the work of our very talented member by searching Blue Elk Designs and take time to appreciate his beautiful works of art. Kachina figures carved by Pedro Jimenez III Rodeo Flats outing fun for all Last month the Sedona Gem and Mineral Club returned to Rodeo Flats, the popular club mine located just outside Camp Verde where beautiful agates can be had. (See photo gallery on Page 4.) Dave Maples led the field trip and photo documented the event. Club members confirmed our claim marker was still in place, and many fine specimens were found. Sedona Gem & Mineral Club Newsletter - Page 3 Amy Koba had some especially impressive finds. Also, participating in the agate treasure hunt was Joe and Betty Hauk, Regina Acuna and Jen Luca. During the dig, the group was visited by horseback riders, who had to wait their turn at the horse trough, as it was occupied by Dave Maples. You never know who you'll bump into during one of our adventures.

6 Rocks are people too! by Evelina Dunton Rocks are a true phenomenon They don t need food or water, They can replace a plant inside or out And you don t even need a potter. Rocks make great companions And for friends you ll never lack, You can talk to rocks forever And they never will talk back. President s Message from Page 1 want to help, but have not yet signed up. I know we can use more volunteers. Come to the show and enjoy the weekend. If you wear your club badge, admission is free. Rocks have feelings too With smiley faces and flagrant flowers. Some are just plain petrified And some have healing powers. Rocks can make such wonderful pets Great rock hounds one might say. They don t growl or bite and stay when told No leash needed and they never run away. Rocks come in every color, shape and size To enhance your home décor. When you see the fantastic results You ll rush out to look for more. Some rocks are very rich Their wealth proclaimed in lore. And some are really loded With platinum, gold and silver ore. You don t need a gun to hunt for rocks And you need not search in vein. Just sign up for the club s field trips An awesome rocker you ll remain. Don t forget to buy a few raffle tickets to enter the drawings at the Sedona Gem and Mineral show for a chance to win incredible rock specimens. Money raised at the show goes toward scholarships. Spread the word to friends and family about the show. Our proceeds determine what scholarships we can offer in I am proud of our efforts and the $3,000 we gave in scholarships this year. The response from student candidates was impressive, and the recipients were appreciative, sending kind words of thanks. It is one of the best feelings a retired teacher, like myself, can experience. We also need to plan for our November elections. Your input is essential, so please come to the General Meeting where we will discuss open positions. The Sedona Gem and Mineral Club is only as good as its member leaders. Barb Schultz will handle nominations and answer any questions you may have about how club administration works. None of it is difficult. I am also available to answer any questions you may have about serving on the board. See you at the show, and rest up for the General Meeting that follows. Our program will be interesting and fun, and some surprises will be revealed. Hope to see you several times in the near future. Until then, Rock On! Sedona Gem & Mineral Club Newsletter - Page 6
