\ Gateway Treasure Hunters Club sadfasdf THE SCOOP Volume 26, Issue 4 Monthly Newsletter April/May 2014 April Showers & May flowers! President: Brian R. V. Pres: Kent B. Treasurer : Roy G. Secretary: Jen N. Huntmaster: Tom S. Wednesday May 28, 2014 Last monthly meeting before the summer break Message From the President Gateway Treasure Hunters Club Code of Ethics Respect the rights and property of others. Never destroy historical or archeological artifacts. Observe all laws, whether national, state, or local. Aid law enforcement officials whenever possible. Leave the land and vegetation as it was. FILL IN ALL HOLES. Remove all trash and litter, take it with you when you leave. Remember that all Treasure Hunters may be judged by the example YOU set. Always conduct yourself with courtesy and consideration toward others. Hello all, Spring is well underway and we kicked it off with our annual hunt at Onset Beach on May 3rd. The year 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the striking of the Kennedy half dollar. In 1964, the coin was intended as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated on November 22nd 1963 in Dallas, Texas. Congress authorized the issuance of that coin just over a month later. Those first coins were produced by the U.S. Mint beginning in January To commemorate the anniversary of those first coins, and in honor of our state s native son, we mixed hundreds of Kennedy Half Dollars into our 3 hunts. The weather that day was amazing, and we had a good turnout with attendees coming from all parts of New England. I am so grateful and want to say thank you for the many donations we received, and to the many members of our club who contributed their time and worked so hard to make the day a successful event for everyone. Finally, I hope by now you re getting out and back into the swing of things, as so many areas are coming alive with places to go and treasure to seek. Good Luck and have a good time. Best Regards, Brian Rountree, President

April Meeting We did not have a guest speaker at our April meeting. What movie you ask? Video of a past hunt. Thanks to Brian Rountree for bringing in the projector and laptop to show the video to the group. It was entertaining and gave light to some history. In The News GTHC 22 nd Annual Open Hunt Photos provided by: Leighton Harrington of Under The Radar, Karin Smith (member), and Jennifer Nicholas (member) to see more go to

Our 22nd annual open hunt has come and gone. All the planning and preparation helped us have a great event this year. It went off without a hitch. There were some changes made from the previous year, we added a lot more prizes, seeded with more fun tokens, contacted a bunch of people and places for donations. We received a lot of great prizes, bought a lot of great prizes, and had a lot of fun planning and executing the event. The Hunt Committee met many times during the last couple months leading up to the hunt. Deciding who to contact, what to purchase, and trying to keep within budget was a fun task. We spent many nights at the Dunkin Donuts at the Sagamore Bridge rotary planning for our big day. There were a few times when the staff told us they were closing up the inside and that we would need to think about heading out. How s it go? You don t have to go home but you can t stay here We had help from club members contacting companies, people, and vendors. Big Kudos go out to club member Mark Parrish, Mark was instrumental with getting in contact with Tesoro out in Arizona, who we purchased a detector from, and received a bunch of prizes to plant tokens for, the guys from the National Geographic Channel TV show Diggers sent us some cool tokens which we planted and used for prizes, some wearables, and autographed items. Mark also asked GPAA, who made a donation of wearables. Tom Smith, our Huntmaster contacted MetalDetector.com who donated gift certificates that became token prizes. Kent Blethen, our Vice President, contacted Gary Drayton who sent us 3 of his books which he autographed! Kent did a lot of running around as did our President, Brian Rountree, without all their efforts the hunt would not have been the event that it was! Jenn Nicholas contacted Detect America who sent us a box full of items from water bottles to hats to shirts and pouches. Roy Gouge our Treasurer contacted Outdoor Outfitters, a metal detecting gear distributor, who sent us a nice variety of prizes from detectors to hats and shirts. Western Eastern Magazine sent us two boxes chock full of magazines to pass out. We handed them out at registration. Tony Brogna of White s came and set up a display, he answered questions people had about gear and showed people new items. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you to all who helped out at the event. Many to list, forgive me if I leave anyone out. Members: Rick B, Bob St. O, Bill L, Harry K, Joe Q, Paul C, and Sandi G. Non-Member: Stephen M. Steve Zak Zakszewski helped contact the food vendor, set up and seeded the fields. Karin Smith, GTHC member for taking so many great photos, as well as Leighton Harrington of Under The Radar for sharing his photos. Some of the prizes at the 2014 event were: Garrett Metal Detectors (3), TRX White s Pin Pointer (3), Lesche diggers (3), Treasure boxes with presidential proof sets and coins, hats, shirts, pouches, travel cases, water bottles, books, commemorative Kennedy coins (3), knee pads, gold panning items, and much, much more.

What Members are finding Dan W. after 8 hours of swinging quarter, 2 silver rings, MTBA token, and a mystery object the size of a quarter with a square cut-out in the middle-and a little over 10 bucks in clad (left & right) Bob St O. found a shoe buckle out with the Six Pack! (left) Bill L indian head penny, 1907 barber dime, 1853 seated liberty dime. (right) Harry K. Demonstrating the one handed hunting while enjoying his java!

Helpful Tip Be cautious of needles, there is an epidemic out there needles are being spotted out in dig areas. Be sure to keep your feet protected and use your scoops and digging tools when pushing dirt/sand around. Next meeting September 24 th Good luck finding the items on the Scavenger hunt list! The scavenger hunt runs from May 28 th to October 22 nd. If you need to print one you can do some from the Facebook Group page, request one via , or print it from Have a wonderful summer!!! *~Happy Hunting~* Please Contact us by gthcsecretary@yahoo.com if there is something you would like to see added to this newsletter. I welcome all suggestions and contributions.
