2 President s Message Harold Bowers, club President Can you believe it? January of the New Year is already gone. Did you make any New Year s Resolutions? Have you kept them? The officers at DGMS have made some resolutions to try and find more interesting field trips and rock hounding adventures for As stated by Darrell Harrison last month, we do need your input on what you would like to see happen this year. He challenged everyone to go home and think about it and come to the February meeting with your ideas. Electricity was restored in a limited capacity, so the meeting for January started late. The electricity has been completely restored and the shop is once more up and running. See you at the meeting. You re President, Harold Bowers JAN 2014 DGMS Minutes Monthly Meeting of the Dallas Gem and Mineral Society American Legion Hall - January 21, 2014 We were in the dark when we arrived at the Hall about 6:30 literally! It seems some nice guys decided to take the wire from the electrical boxes supplying the buildings. At first, it didn t seem like we would be able to hold the meeting, but the Oncor people and our guys were able to get the lights working, and, since the food was there, we forged ahead! Harold Bowers, President opened the meeting, giving a short explanation of the electrical situation, and described the layout of the Legion Hall, and the decision to continue to hold future meetings there. He then called for reports: Darrell Harrison 1 st V.P. (Programs) shared information on Intergem Show, estimate of $7,000 damage to building. David Pirnie 2 nd V.P. More information as received. David Pirnie asked for suggestions on ideas to raise money - some suggestions were: *sell rocks on E-Bay (will need a knowledgeable, dedicated person to head this up *charge per table ($10.00-?) to participate at the parking lot rock swaps (fee schedule for members and non-members *charge a small fee for lunches ($5.00?) *slabs are furnished for qualifying classes after the class offer slabs for sale to students. *Advertising: post cards for Thanksgiving show Stephanie Bair (former Secretary) some members who do not have computers are not receiving announcements, etc. send via u.s.mail. 5 Sunshine and Rain Mike Andrews Editor On Jan. 11 th Bobby Thornton had a stroke. He is out of ICU, and was moved to rehab at the Presbyterian Hospital. Everyone please keep Bobby, Vickie and family in your thoughts and prayers. Cephis M. Hall Saturday May 10, Tuesday December 24, 2013 Cephis M. Hall, age 72, of Broken Bow, Oklahoma died Tuesday, December 24, 2013, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was born May 10, 1941 near Dierks, Arkansas, to the late Robert and Elsie (Perrin) Hall. He graduated from Horatio High School in He was a member of the Church of Christ. Cephis worked with his family throughout his younger years as a logger and construction worker. In 1990 Cephis and his family moved to Hochatown where they owned and operated a rock shop until his health failed. He was an active member of the McCurtain Gem and Mineral Club in Idabel, OK where he previously served as president and vice president. He was currently show chairman. He loved to do school programs all over the state of Oklahoma and field trips to hunt quartz crystals to help study Gods creation in earth science. Cephis and his special friend Sid Love discovered and excavated the rarest find in McCurtain County, the Acrocanthosarus. A mounted cast became the center piece of the Museum of the Red River in Idabel, OK, later to become the State Fossil of Oklahoma. Source: 5 Feb 2014

7 FEBUARY. BIRTHSTONES Source: Amethyst, the gemstone believed by ancient Greeks and Romans to ward off the intoxicating powers of Bacchus, also is said to keep the wearer clear-headed and quick-witted. Throughout history, the gemstone has been associated with many myths, legends, religions, and numerous cultures. English regalia were even decorated with amethysts during the middle Ages to symbolize royalty. It has been associated with many myths, legends, religions, and numerous cultures. Amethyst is purple quartz, a beautiful blend of violet and red that can found in every corner of the earth. Historically, the finest amethyst were found in Russia and were featured in much royal European jewelry. Today, while Brazil is the primary source of this gemstone, fine material can be found elsewhere, especially in Zambia. 8 Trade Secrets, tip and neat stuff This is new feature for the RokTok. It is for tricks of the trade or tip for doing something related to the hobby. I would like it to come from the membership but the source could be from anywhere just so long as the source is given credit. It could be tips from photograph to rock cutting to rock hounding. I will get this started with tips for tumbling. Whether we keep this up or not depends on you. It can be neat things to do. Make it clear the advantage or problem it avoids. Remember we are all NEWBEES to something about this hobby. Even it is the 100 th time you have told someone, it may be the first time they listen. 10 TIPS FOR ROCK TUMBLEING: Source: 1. Add a table spoon of sugar to the final polish stage for that extra gleam to your finished stones. 2. Do not under fill a barrel with water, you will end up with such a thick slurry that the stones will stick together as the waste in the barrel gets denser and denser. 3. Dip your stones in super glue and allow to set solid before starting out - this will fill any cracks or crevices and help prevent grits from passing onto the next phase. 4. Make a note of each tumble you do - how long each phase took, what rock type was involved etc. Experiment with the amount of grit you use at each phase and take note of the results. This can save a lot of time in the future. Why not try recording your efforts with something like a movie camera? 5. Add some washing powder to the final polish phase, this helps the polish to glide more smoothly over the surface of the stones. 6. A syringe is useful for oiling the bushes on the tumbler - you can avoid applying too much and having oil splash all over the place when you restart. 7. To prevent the stones from slipping during phase 2 and 3, stick small pieces of tough rubber to the inside of the barrel, this helps to trip them as they turn and prevents flats from forming. 8. Begin your tumble with rocks as near to round as possible, this is difficult to achieve but reduces the amount of wastage as you try to get that last long piece into shape! 9. If you are tumbling more than one barrel, make a note of the start date of each newly charged barrel, they quickly become out of step with each other and you need to know how many days have passed at each phase for each barrel. 10. For softer rocks, check on them on a daily basis, as they can quickly disintegrate into mud - especially during the 80 Grit phase. 8 Feb 2014
