2 Mar 2014 DGMS Minutes Monthly Meeting of the Dallas Gem and Mineral Society American Legion Hall - March 18, 2014 Harold Bowers, President, opened the meeting with the announcement that the scheduled program had to re-schedule for a later date, so he would be the program tonight. Harold s topic, Knapping included the tools and techniques needed to sit down and begin knapping. Harold demonstrated the tools necessary and the different techniques for knapping. Tidbits and morsels of history on the development of knapping, and the peoples who used it, were interspersed along with instructions on how to make the different types of arrow heads and tools. We enjoyed his demonstration very much, and appreciate him stepping in and giving such an entertaining and educational program on short notice. After the program, everybody went next door to the Rock Shop where the pot luck dinner spread was being guarded. It is always amazing to see the great variety of foods brought by our members, and how each seems to blend and compliment the other items without any prior planning! Following the meal, the ticket numbers were called for the lucky winners of the items donated for the drawing. Thank you, members, for your generous contributions of slabs, roughs, and other items of interest. Darrell Harrison also donated a big slab of to anyone who could answer the question what event happened in Arizona in 1870 involving the Apaches and the Calvary? 7 April Birthstone Source: Diamond As the April birthstone, diamonds are the ideal gift for a loved one. And now you have more choices than ever. Get creative and give the ultimate gift of beauty: a fancy-color diamond. Fancy-color diamonds are natural, rare and truly exotic gem of the earth. Diamonds in hues of yellow, red, pink, blue, and green range in intensity from faint to vivid and generally the more saturated the color, the higher the value. In fact, diamonds sparkling with intense color are rare and may be priced higher than a colorless diamond of equal size. Because fancy-color diamonds are very desirable, color is sometimes introduced in a laboratory. These are correctly called color-treated diamonds. When purchasing a fancy-color diamond, the shopper should ask if any enhancements or treatments were used to improve its color and/or clarity. Learn about the history of the diamond as the April birthstone. 7 Apr 2014
8 Classes at the Shop New classes are scheduled at this time Qualifying Class. The shop only has 5 Genie's so we can only teach 5 students at a time in the Qualifying Class. There is a waiting list of people who want this class. So please register with Ruth and she will notify you when she has a class opening. Other classes: Wire-wrapping, Metal Clay, Chainmail, Metal Smiting, etc. are taught in the shop classroom. Due to space limitations we also limit the size of these classes to 5 or less. How to Register. If you are interested in taking a class, contact Ruth Rainey at dgms.classes@gmail.com or call Ask to be placed on the Waiting List for the class you are interested in. When Ruth has an opening in a class she will contact you to ask if you can attend on the date of the class. If you cannot she will keep you on the waiting list. Once she has registered you she sends out a confirmation confirming your attendance in class. While you may be on the waiting list that does not mean that you will be in the next class if we have a long waiting list. Thanks for your understanding in this matter! We have a great group of volunteer teachers so please tell them how much you appreciate their willingness to teach! If you are interesting in teaching a class, bring some samples to the next meeting and talk to Ruth about your ideas. 9 What s is an Ideal Lighting and Booth Set-Up? I've just started to hit the show circuit to market my crafts made of recycled goods. I'm completely new to show set-up. What's the ideal way to present my work? What suggestions do you have for booths and lighting? Any tips would be appreciated, as I currently feel more than a bit tentative in this arena. Signage; I give high scores to terms and pricing information The smartest first steps to a better booth are to purchase Bruce Baker's CD, Booth Design and Merchandising, and check out my ideas in my book, making a Living in Crafts, especially the chapter called "Thriving on the Show Circuit." "More is more" thinking. This is where stacks of bowls, cases Filled with jewelry, or racks overflowing with clothing are in Buy the last one of anything. To further sweeten the scene, Show domestic items with food and flowers, for instance That said, here are some of my thoughts gathered over 25 years buying for our shop, not to mention all the personal shopping I do. Since I don't know what you make, these ideas need to be general. When doing a wholesale show, please bear in mind the buyers are working and it's our job to make their work as easy as possible. Making a buyer comfortable in your booth will go a long way to making a sale. I suggest you set up your booth with this in mind. In this display, less is more. Buyers don't need to see multiples of the same object; they do, however, need to see all the available colorways. Most stores use displays to tell a story that will help sell the work. It's important to show your buyers the stories they can tell with your work, so let this drive your displays. Retail shoppers, on the other hand, are shopping for fun, whether they're buying a gift or something for themselves. They are looking for a shopping experience, and it's your job to deliver one if you want the sales. This display will benefit from Grow a Digital Presence I'm just getting into this whole digital marketing side of things for my art. I only have a few names on my customer list currently. How do you suggest growing my list quickly and effectively? These could include offers that will only be available online, giving people exclusive access to special content and first dibs on new items in your line. Put a signup form in an obvious place on your website, maybe more than once. Keep it simple--all you need is a name and an address. Have a clipboard in your booth with the same easy form for signup; there, you'll want to get more information--a name and a snail mail address, as well as an address. (cont.) 9 Apr 2014
10 Another tool you'll want to use is social media sites. These won't directly result in additions to your list, but they will help you get the word out to people who may choose to join your list. You might start by putting up a Facebook page. You can then post news about your new work. You can post a link to your website where visitors can click and become customers. You'll also want to encourage your visitors to click "like," which will bring you more traffic. You can also purchase targeted ads on Facebook that will also help drive traffic your way. My son, a jeweler, has followed this route and now has thousands of friends who see each of his posts, many of whom become customers. How did you like this resource? Your feedback helps us provide resources that matter to you most. This article can be found at: WT.fmg_linksection=23FF0824L62DT&cid= &_rid= &WT.mc_id=NL Are you knappin yet? 10 Apr 2014
