2 I hope everyone had a good 4th of July! I m sorry I missed the June meeting and the presentation on Tumbling by Spencer Pattison. I heard it was well received. We have much to look forward to this coming Fall. First, our Fall Rock Swap will be held in September and, hopefully, it will be a little cooler by then. In November, we host our Annual Gem & Mineral Show. We always need volunteers to make the show a success. We will need help to prepare for it, fill roles during the show, and to load out at the end. Sign up sheets are posted on the shop bulletin board. Please commit to volunteering, even if for an hour or two. It is a fun time for all and our annual money maker to keep the shop and club going. See you all soon! Jay Taylor Bench Tips MAKING JUMP RINGS By Brad Smith The difficult part of making jump rings for me has always been holding the coil while cutting off the individual rings. I use a saw to get the best fit when closing the rings later. I've seen all sorts of suggestions for ways to hold the coil, but the one that works best for me is this little jig made from scrap wood. It's about 2 inches wide and 4-5 inches long with a groove cut down its length to cradle the coil of wire and a thin stop attached to the front end. To cut the rings, thread your saw blade through the coil, hold the coil down in the groove and against the front stop, and saw through the bottom of the coil at about a 40 degree angle. Don't forget to use some wax or cutting lube. It really does make a difference. It's the best way I've ever found to hold the coils easily and securely. If the coil doesn't move, you break fewer blades. And it is safer than some other techniques because you are cutting away from the fingers. 7 Source: BIRTHSTONE COLOR Rubies are known for their beautiful red color. In fact, ruby is derived from the Latin rubeus, which means red. Their color may range from deep blood red to paler rose red. Symbolically, the ruby s deep-red color means love and passion. This gem is a red form of corundum; all other colors are sapphires. The ruby s color is due to the presence of chromium, which also makes the gem subject to cracks. Highquality rubies are a transparent, vibrant, purplish red; cloudier samples, or ones containing brown, orange, or pink tones, are less valuable. Many rubies nowadays are heat-treated to improve color saturation and transparency. FACTS & FOLKLORE The birthstone for July was believed to protect its wearer from evil, whether worn as a necklace, ring, or other jewelry. One of the largest rubies in the world is called the Peace ruby because it was found in 1919 shortly after World War I ended. If you own a ruby, you will live in harmony with all people and be protected from danger. If you dream of a ruby, you will have good luck. The ruby, along with the related sapphire, are the second hardest natural gemstones, with only the diamond being harder. The gem was once thought to protect warriors if worn on their armor or embedded in their skin. Considered the king of gems, the ruby symbolizes love, passion, energy, and success. RokTok July
