2 President s Note Field Trips Wow, that is all I can say about the last meeting. It was so exciting to see such a good turnout. It was great to see what everyone has been up to all summer. I am equally excited about the meeting coming up, one of our members is going to demonstrate the art of resin and how it can be used for cabbing, followed by a class on Thursday. I cannot wait! Since I have been a member of this club, I have learned so many techniques and so much rock stuff. We have great members who are willing to share and teach the things they know. I think of the club members as facets of a gemstone, each facet sparkles, but altogether we shine. We are lucky to have so many talented members and I cannot wait to see what the newest members will add to the club. Until next time Peace, love & rocks Pam August: 17-Glenda Bradley September: 03-Don Rawls 11 Belinda Woodruff There are no field trips currently on the calendar. We are looking forward to cooler weather so that we can get outside and enjoy some exploration. If you know of anything that might be of interest let CJ Wright know. 4 Using Resins with Gemstones Commercially, resins are used to stabilize and fill porous stones to make them more durable and increase clarity. Composite stones are created by mixing stone powder or fragments with resin. Resins are also important to glue together stone inlay pieces and mosaics. Estella will discuss these techniques and share numerous examples of her gemstone pieces that utilize resin. Estella will teach a workshop the following Thursday, on August 24 th starting at 7PM. Each participant will make and take home their own mosaic pendant. Class size is limited to 10 people. The fee will be $ All materials will be provided. You do not have to be at the Tuesday meeting to take the class, but it would be helpful if you attended on Tuesday to hear the talk before taking the class. Estella Flather is a lifelong artist whose articles on various arts and crafts have appeared in many publications. She has taught classes in many different crafts throughout the years from textiles and leather to making jewelry. Her jewelry designs appear at the Treasure Tree Gift Shop at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden where she also sells bonsai (Japanese style miniature trees), her other major interest. Estella is a founder of the Fort Worth Bonsai Society and is currently their vice-president and newsletter editor. 6 Senior Park Passes Have Big Change Coming! National Parks, Forest Service, BLM and Bureau of Reclamation offices, National Wildlife Refuges, and Army Corps of Engineers recreation sites. Passes can be purchased online at the USGS Store, but online purchases will incur a $10 service charge in addition to the (for now) $10 price of the pass. Your pass is good for the rest of your life unless lost or stolen. Many people buy an extra to keep in a safe place. Doing so at this time is something to consider because buying a replacement in the future could cost you much more. ACT QUICKLY! The price increase is going to take effect on August 28, Prices are increasing! If you do not have one and are 62 or older this is your last chance to get you Senior Pass for just $ August 28 the price is increasing to $80! August birthstone - Periodot BENEFITS The benefits of the Senior Pass include entrance to all National Parks and Wildlife Refuges that charge entrance fees, for the pass holder and everyone accompanying them in the same vehicle. Where an NPS unit or a Refuge charges a per-person fee, the pass holder can bring in three companions age 16 or older. (Those under age 16 are free anyway.) The Senior Pass also covers Standard Amenity Fees at most Forest Service, BLM, Bureau of Reclamation, and Army Corps of Engineers sites. In addition, Senior pass holders are entitled to a 50% discount on campground fees for the site they occupy, including any younger friends and family members who accompany them.
