5 7 Tips to Help You Weave, Wrap & Coil Your Way to Pretty Wire Jewelry For 50% Off! Source: 13 Jun 2011 by TammyJones I love our Hurt Book and Overstock Sale; it allows me to rediscover some of my favorite jewelry-making books and to share them with you. Today's special find is Weave, Wrap, Coil: Creating Artisan Wire Jewelry, by Jodi Bombardier. As you might have discovered while reading previous Jewelry Making Daily posts, I'd never been a fan of wire wrapping and wire jewelry making until I saw this book. I love the flourishes, spirals, and curlicues! Wire-wrapping always seemed to produce wire jewelry that was more contemporary and modern than I like (I'm such an old-fashioned girl), but the designs in Weave, Wrap, Coil are contemporary while also being classic and pretty. Weave Wrap Coil not only opened my eyes to a softer, more feminine side of wire jewelry making it was conveniently there to teach me how to do it. Here are seven tips and ideas I found enlightening as I ventured into wire wrapping and wire jewelry-making with Weave Wrap Coil: 1. Have you ever wondered why wire gauges are numbered backwards, so that larger wires have smaller numbers, and vice versa? Jodi shares why, and I was so happy to learn! Now I never forget. She explains that a wire's gauge "relates to the number of times the wire is pulled through holes in steel plates. Each time the wire gets pulled, it goes through a smaller hole to reach the desired gauge. Theoretically, that means 28-gauge wire is pulled through steel plates 28 times to get that small." Aha! Did you know that? 2. You probably know that wire comes in different tensile strengths: dead-soft or soft (very malleable and easy to work with), half-hard (a little stiffer), and hard (very rigid and firm) wire. Something you might not have discovered is that even when you're using dead-soft wire, a larger wire gauge will be somewhat stiffer, just because of its thickness. 3. Some wires are naturally stiffer or harder than others, just because of the nature of the metal they are made of; for example, dead-soft sterling silver wire is a little stiffer than copper wire or craft wire, and dead-soft brass wire is even stiffer than all of them. 4. Dead-soft fine silver wire is very, very soft and must be worked carefully to avoid breaking. It isn't recommended for most jewelry, except perhaps in a pendant or earrings that won't get much wear. 5. Brass wire can be more difficult to work with than silver, copper, or craft wires because brass wire is generally stiffer than other wires. Jodi points out that brass wire's stiffness makes it "more springy," and springy wire "tends to curl more and curls lead to kinks." The only thing more heartbreaking than kinks when making wire jewelry is a full-on break (see fine silver wire in #4 above).

6 7 Tips cont. 6. Top tip for beginner wire-wrappers and wire jewelry makers: Use craft wire for making "mock ups" and first attempts of wire jewelry designs. It's less expensive than sterling and even copper wire, so if you make a mistake, it will cost pennies instead of bucks. 7. This one is so logical, but if I hadn't read it, I would have struggled with the issue: When you're weaving on an angled frame, start at the narrowest end or point of the frame and weave toward the widest point. If you weave from the widest to the narrowest point, the wire will slip down the angle. As my friend would say, well duh! But it wouldn't have occurred to me until I was pretty flustered from struggling with keeping the wire from slipping down the frame. For more of Jodi's great information about working with wire and 25 very special wire-jewelry designs, grab your copy of Weave Wrap Coil; it's included in our Hurt Book Sale (even though many of them aren't "hurt" at all, actually, but some have minor wear), so you can save 50% on Weave Wrap Coil and enjoy the pretty wire-wrapping designs that inspired me to make wire jewelry. P.S. Jodi shares in her introduction that it was Mark Lareau's book All Wired Up that helped her to start wire jewelry-making, just like it was her book that inspired me. Bonus: All Wired Up is on sale for 75% off in our Hurt Book and Overstock Sale! Filed under: chain maille, jewelry design, silver jewelry making, jewelry making, jewelry artist, Wire Jewelry Making, Jewelry Supplies Note: I have this book if you want to look at it. Mike Andrews editor of the RokTok Octobers Cabbing Tip: source: MATERIAL SELECTION Today there is a wide variety of pre-slabbed rocks available from which you can create beautiful cabochons. You want to: Select slabs that are free of fractures, cracks, and pits that could potentially cause the piece to come apart in the process. Make sure to check both sides of the material. Inclusions may enhance or detract from the finished project. Pick a slab size and thickness that suits the size of the cabochons you want to create. You will find most cabs are made from 1/8 " to 1/4" slabs. Larger cabs may be made from material closer 3/8" thick. Look for pieces with interesting colors, patterns or design that you can bring out in the cabbing process. If the material is translucent, look at it through a strong light. Hold it up to the sun to look for colors and interesting banding. It is important to remember that your finished cab will be significantly thinner and even more translucent than the original slab. Wet the material to see what it may look like when polished. Gemstones come in varying 'hardness s' which will effect how you grind and polish them. In general, harder materials (like agates) take a nice polish easier than softer stones (like opal). Initially you will have more success and better results if you use harder stones such as Brazilian Agates. Knowing the hardness of the material you are working will help you obtain the best results in the sanding and polishing steps.

8 October Birthstone Source: October is another month with two birthstone choices Tourmaline and Opal. Tourmaline Tourmaline has become a favorite gemstone among jewelry designer, and gem collectors the world over. Since it is available in a wide variety of colors, it is ideally suited to almost anyone's taste. Tourmaline also is known for displaying several colors in the same gemstone. These bi-color or tri-color gems are formed in many combinations; gemstones with clear color distinctions are highly prized. One multi-color variety is known as watermelon tourmaline, and features green, pink, and white colors bands; to resemble its namesake, the gemstone is cut into thin slices having a pink center, white ring, and green edge. Tourmaline is found in many localities including Brazil, Afghanistan, East Africa, and the USA. Opal The name opal derives from the Greek Opallos, meaning "to see a change (of color)." Opals range in color from milky white to black with flashes of yellow, orange, green, red, and blue. An opal's beauty is the product of contrast between its color play and its background. Opal is a formation of non-crystalline silica gel that seeped into crevices in the sedimentary strata. Through time and nature's heating and molding processes, the gel hardened into the form of opals. The opal is composed of particles closely packed in spherical arrangements. When packed together in a regular pattern, a three-dimensional array of spaces are created that give opal its radiance.

9 October , 2014 Intergem Hello to all. The summer is almost over and it's time to start the planning for our next Intergem. I think you will all agree that we had a blast last Intergem, shared great information and attracted several new members. I hope you will all be available again to participate. Please get back to me if you will be available and what days. Let me also know if you know of any other DGMS member that has some other related talent we could showcase. We again will need volunteers for setup on 10/8/14 the Wednesday before. We did a great job with the setup this last time. I think we were the best represented of all the area clubs. The setup is not restricted to our members only. Feel free to bring your adult family members, friends, neighbors and we'll be glad to give them a ticket to get into the show free. frank.hdis@gmail.com

11 Message about Intergem set up We had received a message from Intergem that they will no longer be draping the tables for the vendors, if they want it they have to do it themselves. What Danny has been able to negotiate with them for the clubs is to have some able body club members available Wednesday afternoon to set up piping and drapes (1-5-ish). Also all day Thursday (9-5) to assist the vendors drape their tables if they want it. The booth DGMS gets rents for $3,000 so we need to show how big a help we can be. Frank See Danny's note below. Kevin and Chuck would like for the combined clubs to have around 12 or so able bodies (a few from each club) at Market Hall after 1pm on Wed. afternoon, Oct 8 to put out bases and put up the piping and drapes for the show. I understand the clubs helped out with that for the spring show. The club people could go ahead and setup their own booths on Wednesday. Intergem is trying to get the dealers to learn how to cut and staple their own plastic, since they usually tear up the booths and rearrange the tables to suit themselves. However it would be nice if each club could have a potential stapling crew of a few bodies on hand in the club booths and lurking around the hall on Thursday to assist dealers who need some help. Intergem is giving up about $3000 of booth rental for each club to participate and I'm trying to maintain the idea that they need the Dallas area clubs to put on the show. Dallas is the only show with that kind of club space. So please get the word out to your club members for anybody who's capable of carrying bases, poles and drapes to please be at Market Hall from around 1pm until 5pm or so on Wed., Oct 8 and all day Thu. 9am to 5pm to staple. Thanks, Dan Baker Fall STEM Fair at Brookhaven Community College, Back by popular demand, BCGI will indeed host our semiannual STEM Fair on October 18-19th, 2014 from 10-5pm on both dates. Our mission for the STEM Fair is to awaken the inquisitiveness of children of all ages and the community at large, while making STEM learning fun. We will accomplish this by allowing children to participate with hands-on-activities, expand our audience, and involve vendors that will strongly encourage students to embrace STEM careers. Our fair will allow the students to explore STEM related topics beyond the classroom and provide the children and the community a new outlook. With our office phone constantly ringing with inquiries regarding the show and our consistency from previous shows, this will surely be the best two-day event yet!
