3 3 Share your Dallas Gem and Mineral Society Share your Knowledge, write Articles, take Classes, Teach Classes, and Give Presentations Cut and polish rocks and support your shop Teach Children, they are our future Knapping Class and Fun Flaking experience The six participants in Harold Bower s knapping class had fun learning about flats, tables, flakes, ridges and flint cuts. The 3 1/2 hour course was interesting but did not yield very many Clovis points. It did point out the problems and techniques faced by those who did make these artifacts. A lard pile of very sharp little rocks did mark efforts of the armatures. We all walked away with a much greater appreciation for those who do follow and practice the flint knapper s art.

4 4 The DGMS offers several craft and learning opportunities for members and guests. Among the classes and presentation are the following KNAPPING ARROWHEADS, STONE KNIFES AND STONE AXES: BEGINNING METAL SMITHING: Learn basic silver solder using relatively cheaper metals METAL SILVER CLAY CLASSES: Working with metal clays BEADING: Basic bead making and display. 7 7 June Birthstones Source: June counts three gems as birthstones, pearl, Alexandrite, and moonstone. Pearl: Historically, pearls have been used as an adornment for centuries. They were one of the favorite gem materials of the Roman Empire; later in Tudor England, the 1500s were known as the pearl age. Pearls are unique as they are the only gems from living sea creatures and require no faceting or polishing to reveal their natural beauty. In the early 1900s, the first successful commercial culturing of round saltwater pearls began. Since the 1920s, cultured pearls have almost completely replaced natural pearls in the market. Alexandrite: A relatively modern gem, Alexandrite, was first discovered in Russia in 1831 during the reign of its namesake, Czar Alexander II, and is an extremely rare chrysoberyl with chameleon-like qualities. Its color is a lovely green in both daylight and fluorescent light; it changes color to a purplish red in incandescent light. Due to its rarity, some jewelers stock synthetic versions of this enchanting gemstone. (Synthetic gemstones are man-made alternatives to the natural material, possessing the same physical, optical, and chemical properties as the natural gemstone.) Moonstone: from Sri Lanka; The third birthstone for June is the Moonstone. It was given its name by the Roman natural historian Pliny, who wrote that moonstone's appearance altered with the phases of the moon a belief that held until well after the sixteenth century. A phenomenal gemstone, moonstones show a floating play of light (called adularescence) and sometimes show either a multirayed star or a cat's eye. Considered a sacred stone in India, moonstones often are displayed on a background of yellow (a sacred color) and are believed to encapsulate within the stone a spirit whose purpose is to bring good fortune. Part of the family of minerals called feldspar, moonstone occurs in many igneous and metamorphic rocks and comes in a variety of colors such as green, blue, peach, and champagne. The most prized moonstones are India, Australia. The United States, Mayanmar, and Madagascar are also sources.

9 9 There seems to be some confusion on our part and the purpose of DGMS participation at the InterGem Show. Here are the original rules as of August 20, 2014 Any clarification Needs to be directed to Gerald Pennington Dallas Gem & Mineral Society Rules for demonstrating at the InterGem Show In order to qualify to participate in the DGMS booth at InterGem, members must: Be a member in good standing. Have attended at least 2 monthly meetings in the past 12 months. Help setup at InterGem on the Wednesday or Thursday before the InterGem Show. Demonstrate a skill learned or taught at DGMS. Members have the privilege to sell items made with the skills learned or taught at the club. InterGem for DGMS is not a swap meet, is not an opportunity to buy and resell goods. InterGem is a time for DGMS members to demonstrate the skills they learned and practice at DGMS, greet the public, explain our club operations, and invite the public to come look at our operations and join the Club. Melting Points Melting Points Metal Fahrenheit (f) Celsius (c) Aluminum Brass Bronze Cast Iron Copper Gold Lead Magnesium Nickel Silver Steel Tungsten Wrought Iron We will accept collections, single rocks, groups of rocks and anything related to rocks, anything of value related to rocks and rock hounding or jewelry.
