Terry Clarke, bass of the 1980 champs, THE BOSTON COMMON, was with us to share some laughs and offer some excellent impromptu coaching. We even got him to sing in a pick-up quartet. Two quartets entertained the riser guys. THE PINE CHORDS from the Hernando chapter shared an upcoming contest set and even took a cell phone call during one of their songs. And HoH s own SONGFELLOWS (with Dan McFarlane subbing on tenor) sang a couple of real old barbershop standards. 3 Page 3 The HERALDS are still looking for a FEW GOOD MEN. Attendance Reporter Russ Powell's move to Ticket Manager opens another key post -- reporting attendance for posting in the members-only section of the Heralds' website. It's a great way to get to know everybody in the chorus. Please see Russ or Bob to volunteer. Valentines Program Manager With the awful prospect that Bryan Kleske will be moving away later this year, the chapter needs a new manager for this key program. Duties include scheduling delivery of the best product our chapter has to offer -- our music -- during one of the year's happiest times. Please see Bryan or Bob for some further information. Program Advertising Manager This person is needed to help the chapter follow Ev Nau's recommendations and help us develop greater advertising revenue for the June show. Please see Steve Matheson or Bob with any questions. Other Openings The chapter needs helpers in a variety of areas. Please think about what area interests you and contact the person responsible: Advertising sales (see Steve Matheson), Membership (see Ed Burt), Show planning and backstage work (see Pat Bauer or Nick Schwob) to name just a few. ANNUAL SHOW TICKETS Terry Clarke has donated a copy of the classic recording of THE BOSTON COMMON Collective Works. It s to be awarded to the Herald who sells the most Annual Show tickets. It s a great CD set and a wonderful incentive to do your part for HoH! There may be some other prizes...too! The Annual Show on June 3 got a big boost with a very successful opening night for consignment ticket sales. Twenty-seven members participated for a volume of $12,050 ticket sales. These tickets can be picked up between 6-6:58 p.m. on April 4. An award program is already being put in place for outstanding ticket sales. Look to your LEFT! With such incentives in place, each guy ought to be cranking up his customer list and checking it twice. There are plenty of excellent tickets left for those members who have not yet made their reservations. Ticket business will be conducted every Tuesday through June 3, one hour prior to rehearsal. Ticket questions? Contact Russ Powell: russ5000@hotmail.com

4 Page 4 Here is something worth knowing if you have a cell phone... Have you ever wondered why phone companies don't seem interested in trying to prevent the theft of cell phones? If you have ever lost, or had one stolen, and if you are on a plan, you still have to pay the plan approximately up to 24 months and you have to buy another handset and enter into another contract. This is more revenue for the phone company. There is a simple way of making lost or stolen cells useless to thieves and the phone companies know about it, but keep it quiet. To check your cell phone's serial number, key in the following on your phone: star-pound-zero-six-pound ( * # 0 6 # ) and a fifteen digit code will appear on the screen. This is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it safe. Should your cell phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block that handset, so even if the thief changes the SIM (memory) card, that phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody did this, there would then be no point in stealing cell phones. Man! Wish I d said that. Reality is just an illusion, albeit a very persistent one. I'm very responsible. Whenever something goes wrong they always say I'm responsible. A king's castle is his home. A self-addressed envelope would be addressed 'envelope'. A seminar on time travel will be held in two weeks ago. If a cow laughs hard, does milk come out its nose? Anarchy is better than no government at all. Half the people you know are below average. I know it sounds like I'm in denial, but I'm not. I went to school to become a wit, only got halfway through. This gift comes through Allstate Foundation s Agency Hands in the Community fund. Thanks Tim! HoH also received a $300 donation from a new source; new but not unknown. It came via a new fundraising endeavor of The Harmony Foundation. Members of The Barbershop Harmony Society can make tax deductible donations and designate up to 30% of the gift to the district or chapter of their choice. Just like any worthy project, being organized always produces better results. How do you go about setting up your own sales campaign? Just tell your friends. Tell neighbors. Basically, tell everyone that June 3 is a special day and you re doing them a great favor by helping them get this event on their calendar early. Get help from your wife or friends or anybody who is willing to share with others how much fun they will have at the show. Last Tuesday, we heard many good ideas regarding ticket sales. Marty Port talked about the importance of keeping records, making address lists, and sending out notes to his potential customers. He drafts a cover letter to go with our flyer about the show. Pat Bauer talked about people raving about our shows. Our performances are truly exciting and people enjoy them. They re eager to hear about our next show. The audience will not be disappointed. You just have to get out there and tell them what a great entertaining evening they ll have. Thanks for working hard to sell out the house! Ticket needs or questions? 8 Page 4 AS IF YOU DON T HAVE ENOUGH TO THINK ABOUT ALREADY QUESTIONS: (No fair peeking below!) 1. A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose between three rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins with loaded guns, and the third is full of lions that haven't eaten in three years. Which room is safest for him? 2. A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him under water for over 5 minutes. Finally, she hangs him. But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together. How can this be? 3. What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and gray when you throw it away? 4. Can you name three consecutive days without using the words Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday? 5. This is an unusual paragraph. I'm curious how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it. It looks so plain you would think nothing is wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is unusual though. Study it, and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out. Try to do so without any coaching! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ANSWERS: 1. The third. Lions that haven't eaten in three years are dead. 2. The woman was a photographer. She shot a picture of her husband, developed it and hung it up to dry. 3. Charcoal 4. Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow 5. The letter "e," which is the most common letter in the English language, does not appear once in the long paragraph. 10 Page 2 AUDIENCE Singing to family and friends is the traditional method of building barbershop audiences. Although it is wonderful to share our hobby with family and friends, this traditional method does not usually accelerate audience expansion. So, a paradigm shift has to occur in order to enlarge our entertainment circle within the listening public. We need to sing to total strangers and those who have never experienced our form of a cappella entertainment. Certainly, advertising helps to get the word out, but there is no substitute for our one-on-one conversations. This, of course, suggests that we release ourselves from our comfort zone in order to introduce barbershop singing to those perfect strangers. It s a methodology that will not be easy, but how else will we infuse our audiences with new blood? Go get em! For tickets and more information concerning the Herald s Annual show on June 3 at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, contact HoH ticket chairman, Russ Powell: tickets@heraldsofharmony.org A great prize awaits the Herald who sells the most Annual Show tickets this year. 11 Page 3 J 4 G No, it s not some new high-caffeine energy drink. And it s CERTAINLY not some top secret military aircraft. J4G is just the lazy man s way of referring to HoH quartet, JUST 4 GRINS. Fresh from their recent tour of contest performances in Salt Lake City, Utah and Sacramento, California, the Heralds own J4G made their chapter show debut Saturday, April 9 in Sun City Center, Florida. The guys opened the second half of Par for the Chorus' Showtime 2:02 and delighted the audience with an expanded song list and their many wacky, tuneful antics. They'll appear with us, too, June 3 at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center if they can possibly fit us into their busy schedule of talk show appearances, presidential audiences and oil changes. J4G happens to be (from left to right) Tenor - Dave Roberts, Lead - Kent Jenkins, Bass - Lou Wurmnest, and Baritone - Ralph Brown. (And we don t even want to know what Roberts is holding in his hands! ) AND, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO. Permit me to bother you all for just a moment to celebrate the 68 th birthday of The Society for the Preservation and Propagation of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, as it was originally known. I sometimes wonder how hard it was to change that to Encouragement? As the Barbershop Harmony Society staff partakes of birthday cake in the break room... I think it appropriate to laud and enjoy all the achievements and progress the Society has enjoyed over those many years. Yes, we can always improve and we re all working hard to do that, but we must not let that enthusiasm for change cloud an appreciation of what we enjoy today. Congratulations to all the members, the quartets and the choruses that have chosen to sing, to enrich lives through singing. They have enjoyed, and continue to enjoy, a hobby that stretches from the Bartlesville Barflies to Realtime; that includes OC Cash, Rupert Hall, Sean Divine, Charlie Metzger and Joe Barbershopper; that involves Dick Van Dyke and Norman Rockwell, Jim Henry and Tom Neal; that requires countless hours of dedication and volunteer work; that brings smiles to faces and joy to hearts; that engages the best aspects of humanity; that increases in complexity the more it is studied; and that will continue as long as people enjoy singing. Happy sixty-eighth, Society, and MANY returns of the day! Sincerely, Ed E. D. Watson Executive Director/CEO

12 Page 4 Invitation To The First Meeting Of The Society Suppose O. C. Cash and Rupert Hall sent this letter to YOU. Would you have been among the 26 men to attend the first meeting of the Society? April 6, 1938 Gentlemen In this age of dictators and government control of everything, about the only privilege guaranteed by the Bill of Rights not in some way supervised and directed, is the art of Barber Shop Quartet singing. Without doubt we still have the right of "peaceable assembly" which I am advised by competent legal authority includes quartet singing. The writers of this letter have for a long time thought that something should be done to encourage the enjoyment of this last remaining source of human liberty. Therefore, we have decided to hold a songfest on the Roof Garden of the Tulsa Club on Monday, April 11, at 6:30 p. m. A Dutch lunch will be served. After several months of research and investigation, we are convinced that your record warrants our tendering you the honor of joining this group. We sincerely trust you will not fail us. As evidence of the work that your Committee has done in this connection, we enclose a compilation of most of the good old fashioned Barber Shop Quartet songs which we trust you will look over and familiarize yourself with. Bring this list with you. It is our purpose to start right in at the first, sing every song, in numerical order, plow right down the middle, and let the chips fall where they will. What could be sweeter than ten or twelve perfectly synchronized male voices singing "Dear Old Girl!" Just thinking about it brought back to your Committee fond memories of a moonlight night, a hay ride and the soft young blonde visitor from Kansas City we dated on that occasion years ago. Do not forget the date, and make every effort to be present, telephone us if convenient. We will have a private room and so will not be embarrassed by the curiosity of the vulgar public. You may bring a fellow singer if you desire. Harmoniously yours, Rupert Hall, Royal Keeper of the Minor Keys & O. C. Cash, Third Assistant Temporary Vice Chairman Did you get the word? The Christmas performance at McDill on Dec. 16 is a GO! Be sure to mark your calendar RIGHT NOW so you ll be ready for this outstanding performance opportunity! This week, HoH launched our one-month ad sales blitz. Bruce Yeager will be collecting returns starting next Tuesday night. Our goal is to reach $3,500 in sales by the May 16th deadline. REWARD? Person who sells the highest dollar amount of ads will receive two Diamond Box-level tickets to the Rays - Red Sox game July 4th at The Trop! Get in the game and help the chorus. When you do, we all win! Faithful Herald, and District Board Member, Fred Bjork, recently underwent surgery. Reports are good and it looks like we can t stop him from being back on the risers very soon. GET WELL SOON FRED! Not all surprises are this nice (or noisy). But, last Tuesday LAST CALL walked into the rehearsal hall. We had to actually force them to sing to us which they bashfully did THREE TIMES! The chords rang. The rafters vibrated. The applause roared. They truly proved why they deserve to be our District Champs. Thanks again guys!

16 Page 3 HoH MAKES AN INNOVATIVE OUTREACH TO YOUNG SINGERS - In response to a motion by board member Dr. John Solak, this week the Heralds are inviting all Hillsborough County public and private high school students who sing in their schools choral groups, to attend Encore 06 at no charge. By unanimous vote of the Chapter Board, students may also bring their parents. Music teachers also have been invited to attend, accompanied by a guest -- all free! In a letter to schools and an HoH news release distributed this week, Bob Morrissey said we know that kids who sing stay in school. We want to support that and the teachers who help them do it. In the Board discussion, Dr. John added that this might help kids arrange a family night out, built around singing in a magnificent hall and maybe a Dad who attends would be interested in singing, too (with us!). The Board also considered the possibility of inviting music students and teachers from other nearby counties, a step it might employ for future shows, pending the outcome of the Hillsborough outreach. Students and teachers must request tickets in advance by contacting Russ Powell ( ) to identify themselves and school. They may also request tickets online by visiting the Heralds website ( ) and following the instructions there. The reserved seats will be in Morsani Hall s Balcony and Gallery areas. Seats are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Complimentary tickets must be obtained in advance. No complimentary tickets will be available through the TBPAC Box Office or on the night of the show. Deadline for requesting these special tickets is Monday, May 22. Legendary singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot will accept honorary membership in the Barbershop Harmony Society Saturday, April 22, in Toronto. Lightfoot is being honored by the Society for his support of barbershop harmony and the impact he s had on the world of music. A native Canadian, Lightfoot will receive his award during the Champions Show, immediately following an Ontario regional barbershop competition at 7:30 p.m. at the Sir John A. MacDonald Collegiate Institute. Drayton Justus, president of the Society, will bestow the honor. It is our great pleasure to honor Gordon Lightfoot in this way, Justus said. His music already has etched an indelible mark on modern culture. We like to think his early experience in barbershop harmony encouraged him in some way. Lightfoot was a member of the Orillia, Ontario, chapter of the Society. His first barbershop quartet, The Collegiate Four, was formed in late 1952 prior to Lightfoot entering high school. They won first prize on the CBC television talent contest Pick the Stars in the fall of His second quartet, Teen-Timers, competed in regional barbershop contests and placed second in November of The group s performance schedule is said to have rivaled that of groups performing more contemporary music. The quartet disbanded as its members pursued university education. Lightfoot volunteered his time to perform during a barbershop chapter s charity auction in As part of that event, he sang with the award-winning Toronto Northern Lights chorus. The singer/songwriter has five Grammy nominations, 17 Juno awards and the Governor General s Award, the highest official Canadian honor, among many other honors. He joins artists such as Dick Van Dyke, Irving Berlin, Meredith Willson, Victor Borge, the Osmond Brothers, Sherrill Milnes and Gene Puerling in an elite group who also have been honored by the Barbershop Harmony Society. (News provided by BHS s LIVE WIRE ) HoH sales blitz Bruce Yeager will be collecting returns next Tuesday night. Our goal is to reach $3,500 in sales by the May 16th deadline. REWARD? The HERALD who sells the highest dollar amount of ads will receive two Diamond Box-level tickets to the Rays - Red Sox game July 4th at The Trop! AND it includes a reserved parking pass! Thanks to Don Messler, Bob Morrissey and others who have already sold some ads. Get in the game and help the chorus. When you do, we all win!

17 Page 4 Well - THE PUSH Contest is soon here, AND so is our ANNUAL SHOW. This means that all new IS music ON! needs to be taped and adjudicated ASAP. You may do it on the risers with your recorders or (the easiest way) do it at home, singing along with a downloaded learning track. You re on your honor to do it from memory! ALL riser guys must qualify on the following: - Miss You/Lost You Medley - Old Cape Cod - Ghost Riders - Kazoo Koncerto (from measure 92 to the end) NOTE: newer singers will also need to be sure they have qualified on both It s You and Thanks for the Memory. If you have questions about the songs or the process, please see either your section leader or Pat Bauer. That must have been some Easter Parade! The MYSTERY quartet photo on this week s front page (taken in the 70 s) features none other than Dan Deignan singing bari (on the far left) and Russ Powell singing tenor (on the far right). And, yes, we know they haven t changed a bit. By the way, Russ, nice zebra-print on those pants! Be sure to visit the SHARED RESOURCES page in the Members area of the HoH site each week. 18 Weekly E-Newsletter April 30, 2006 Yep! She was there yet again. Cathie Billings, our choreo coach and all-round Heralds performance advisor (or as she is known, THE PUNISHER) was once again on site for our rehearsal to help us refine the moves and take big strides forward in making both of our contest songs come to life. Her insights are just what the Heralds need to make music reach beyond the footlights and into the hearts of all our audiences. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP, CATHIE. NEXT REHEARSAL: May 2 Early Bird CHOREO at 6 PM Regular Rehearsal at 7 PM SPECIAL PRE-CONTEST AFTERGLOW A big celebration before going to contest will be held in the dining room of our hall after the next rehearsal. We ll have plenty of pizza and drinks for all our hungry singers, wives, special ladies, and guests. Men, please bring your wives and significant others to this special event. No one will have to bring any food; everything will be provided. Just come, enjoy the singing, the camaraderie, and the food. Heralds Alumnae come and celebrate with us and see what you re missing on Tuesdays. Our Heralds are singing better and better each week. Ladies and friends come over on May 2 nd to cheer the Heralds on to another victory. FROM THE HoH TICKET-MASTER It may be difficult to sell tickets if you re new to the Tampa area not having the opportunity to establish a lot of contacts yet. Certainly, contacts are important, but what s most important is that you be convinced the show is a worthy event people should attend. Once you are sure of that, you ll be apt to share the enthusiasm with others. Your passion for singing is the only credential you really need. Your love for the hobby gives you the impact that makes you believable and makes others want to hear more from you. People are willing to listen to those who are really excited about something they love. Your barbershop passion can be contagious and may cause others to make sure they don t miss the show opportunity. You don t really need to convince anyone of anything. Just present the show enthusiastically and watch them decide to attend. For ticket info, see Russ Powell, Ticket Chairman, or call the HOH Ticket Hotline or tickets@heraldsofharmony.org ALSO: Please turn in all ticket money you collect AS YOU GET IT. Deposits made into the HoH treasury continue to bear interest. So every day and every dollar helps the chorus. Don t hold it. Bring it in. 20 Page 3 - CONTEST STUFF - As we all know, Spring Contest is the weekend of May 5, in Jacksonville. Here are a handful of items to keep in mind. 1) Uniform issues: Be sure to take your full FORMAL and INFORMAL HoH outfits with you to Jax. We will wear our informal ones prior to the contest events on Saturday. Listen and watch for detailed instructions. Take time to inspect your tux and all the accessories, including make-up. Don t wait till the last minute. If you have questions or are missing something, contact Dick Sipple ASAP. Phone: wsipple372@aol.com 2) If you will be in Jax by NOON on Friday (5/5) our riser crew needs your help to get them in place by 1PM. Please meet Don Messler in the basement loading-dock area of the Omni Hotel to lend a hand. 3) There will be a brief but MANDITORY chorus rehearsal on Friday night (5/5) right after the quartet session. Our rehearsal room will be on the mezzanine level of the Omni (as usual). This rehearsal will begin within 30 minutes of the conclusion of the quartet semi-finals. 4) There are lots of EXTRA dimensions to this year s convention. You can take a look at the Spring Convention schedule by going to the following link. The specific chorus contest ROTATION information will be distributed soon. Stay tuned! 5) Start NOW getting as much rest and hydration as you can. Every hour of sleep, every minute of exercise, every NUTRITIOUS meal, every gallon of water (or the lack thereof) between now and May 6 makes more of a difference than you realize.
