Promotional literature issued by record companies never used the term. How "barbershop" became an adjective for quartet singing is not clear. There is no evidence that quartet singing had ever been popular in American barbershops. Earlier references to "barbershop" as a musical term are rare. The earliest seems to be in the 1910 song "Play That Barber-Shop Chord," popularized by Bert Williams in Follies of 1910 and on Columbia disc A929. The song does not actually refer to barbershop quartets but "barbershop" is used as a musical term (it is a type of harmony). The song's composer was Lewis F. Muir. William Tracey is given credit on sheet music for lyrics, but Ballard Macdonald successfully argued in court that he was the song's originator, which resulted in the song's publisher paying Macdonald $37,500, forcing the publisher into bankruptcy. In 1931, Vernon Dalhart and Adelyne Hood hosted for a shaving cream manufacturer, Barbasol, the network radio show Barber Shop Chords. It featured Dalhart as Barbasol Ben, Hood as a manicurist named Barbara, and a barber shop quartet. Broadcast three times a week on CBS, the show left the air in October 1931 after six months. A now-famous Norman Rockwell illustration of a quartet singing in a barbershop graced the cover of the Saturday Evening Post dated September 26, The term "barbershop quartet" became commonplace after the formation, in 1938, of the SPEBSQSA (Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America). 6 Page 3 THE BACK PAGE A tough looking biker had been in the biker bar for quite some time when he finally decided it was time, once again to hit the road. He stepped through the front door of the bar and instantly realized that his bike had vanished from the spot he had parked it. "All right" he said loudly, coming back into the busy biker bar "I'm going to have a shot of whisky and if my hog isn't back up front by the time I'm done, what happened in Detroit will happen here too!" With that many of the bikers ran out of the bar and within moments one came back to tell the tough biker that his hog was now parked in front of the bar for him. When the tough guy started to leave the bartender asked him. "Pardon me, stranger, but what happened in Detroit?" The tough biker replied casually: "I had to walk back to my hotel!" A business woman named Cindy was in the airport VIP lounge on her way to Los Angeles. While in the VIP lounge, she noticed Donald Trump sitting on the sofa enjoying a drink. As luck would have it, Cindy was meeting with a very important client who was running somewhat late. Being a bold business woman, Cindy decided to go ahead and approach Mr. Trump, and introduced herself. Much to her surprise Mr. Trump turned out to be very nice. Encouraged by this she explained to "the Donald" that she was about to close a very important business deal and that she would be very grateful if he could say a quick "hello Cindy" to her when she was with her client. Mr. Trump consented to do just that. Ten minutes later while Cindy was speaking with her client, she felt a rap on her shoulder. It was Donald Trump. Cindy turned about and looked at him as Trump said. "Hi Cindy, what's going on?" To which Cindy glibly replied, "Not now, Donald, can't you see I'm in a meeting!" So, here is the first of two week s of short articles on the subject at hand Many years ago, when Rudyard Kipling was one of the most popular writers of his time, it was reported that, for his newspaper work, he would regularly receive fifty cents for every word he wrote. Some students at Oxford University, less impressed with this success than they should have been, sent Kipling fifty cents sarcastically requesting: Please send us back one of your very best words. Immediately, Kipling cabled back his one-word response. The message: Thanks. Thanks is, indeed, one of the very best words. Yet its one most of us tend to use all too seldom. May this year be different, and may words and actions of Thanksgiving bountifully overflow from us onto all those around us. At our Recent Rehearsal. Here s a follow up on that same idea... When still a lad, Benjamin Franklin said to his mother, "I have imbibed an acephalous molluscous." Supposing he had just swallowed something poisonous his mother forced him to take a large dose of an emetic. When he got over the effects of the medicine he said, "I had eaten nothing but an oyster." Then his mother thrashed him for deceiving her. Then and there Benjamin vowed never again to use big words when little words would do. While it does seem like such a little word, it carries enormous power when it is used with genuine, sincere meaning: THANKS. So, give it often this week. - to your family - to your friends - to the Lord OUR NEXT REHEARSAL Tues, Nov. 25 Regular 7pm and our weekly afterglow at At our Recent Rehearsal. The Born Free/Woodalls Patriotic RV Tour performed in 80 pre-arranged locations in towns along the way. One location was the grocery store in downtown Mountain Home, Idaho. In the audience was Bret Walborn of Tampa who was visiting his parents in the small Idaho town. Last weekend the quartet was performing at the Christmas Season Opening of West Shore Mall and after listening to a few songs a man approached the quartet and said, "Are you the guys that sang in Mountain Home, Idaho on the way to Utah". Close enough. It was, indeed, Bret proving once again that it really is a small world.
