2 Page 2 INTRODUCING THE HERALDS TAG TEAM The Heralds Music Team has recently formed a new group within the chorus, the Heralds "Tag Team." The primary purpose of the Tag Team is to sing simple tags with guests at Heralds rehearsals, helping to "set the hook" with potential members, and so to recruit more good singers into the Heralds. A secondary but no less important purpose is to help interested Heralds on the risers start singing, or sing more, tags. Tag singing is not only lots of fun, it also helps to improves the ear and the chops! There are 8 charter members on the Tag Team, plus our Music Director Bill Billings, ex-officio. These 8 gents are Pat Bauer, Ralph Brown, Lynn Hineman, Kent Jenkins, Joe Kane, Ed McKenzie, Bob Mitchell, and Byron Poore. If you bring a guest to rehearsal, please let one of these guys know! We are open to expanding the Tag Team to other interested Heralds who can demonstrate the ability to sing - accurately, in tune, and with reasonable vocal quality - at least 2 parts to a modest tag repertoire. Please contact your Chief ProTAGonist for details, or if you have any questions about the Tag Team. The entire Tag Team is very much open to your well-considered suggestions for this program. Hope to ring one with you soon! Joe Kane Chief ProTAGonist bbshop@tampabay.rr.com Hey, Pardner Did ya know there s a new attendance taker in this here town? With the recent shifting of responsibilities within the Heralds duty roster we were in serious need of someone who would be willing to step up and do the important work of keeping the attendance records for Heralds rehearsals and performances. Who do you suppose volunteered? That s him on the left. Weber the Brave. (Most people just call him Bob.) Whatever the name, we call him great for doing what he does for HoH! THANKS WtB! 11 Page 5 All the Show Quartets were CLASS ACTS. Read all their THANKS to HoH below... Heralds, Just wanted to say a big Thank You for allowing Just 4 Grins to be a part of the show! What an honor it was to have been asked and what a thrill it was for us to participate. We hope you guys were pleased with our performance and please know that we look forward to singing for the troops whenever you ask us. We thought the show was fantastic and all of our family and friends are still talking about what a great evening of entertainment the show was for them. I know some of us were worried about the show running over in length, but from all our customers the comments were, we didn t notice! What a compliment that is! Thanks again for the thrill of performing with HOH. - JUST 4 GRINS Hi guys. Just wanted to thank you again on behalf of all of Ebbets Field for letting us sing on your show and afterglow. We're so appreciative of you for giving us the opportunity. The show was great all around. The evening is one we won t forget. Please pass along our sincerest gratitude to the chorus for your donation to our travel fund, it was completely unexpected, but again, the Tampa chapter continues to show it's a cut above the rest. Excellent work all around, we'll see you all soon. Thank you so much, - Alex Rubin (for Ebbets Field) What a terrific time! We were treated like kings and enjoyed the every minute spent with the entire gang. While we realize that we are family, yet it's rare that chapters treat us with such kindness and respect. We laughed and laughed and that is our measures of a great time! You all were extremely organized and kept us informed. You may not realize this, but all of these things are rare. Most of our experiences at other chapter shows are quite different. The HOH family is to be commended. The chorus is performing very well and getting better each time we hear you. We cannot say enough about our overall positive experience. You all do it right. That's the bottom line. Let's do it again! - Last Call (Byron, Mark, Bill, and Jerry) Thanks soooooooooooooo much SEP was honored to share your stage and we had a great time. John (Solak) did a wonderful job in letting us know what we had to do and where we had to go. The theatre is a palace and we were thrilled to be a part of the show. We are so lucky to be able to travel around and meet great Barbershoppers and terrific barbershop chruses. Yours will certainly go on the list as one of the better places to sing and the guys are terrific. Please let everyone know how much we appreciated singing with you guys and being a part of your show. Regards, - Bobby (for Saturday Evening Post Quartet)

June 14th. What a wonderful surprise to find out that we were being entertained by your group again. Once again, it was a true delight to listen to. It seemed shorter than last year, which was just a bit of a disappointment, but so enjoyable and am looking forward to listening again at Christmastime at the Performing Arts Center. Jack Bentley passed away June 6th at the age of 71 after a few years with Alzheimers. At the service and during the eulogy and afterward at the reception (in Lakefield, Ontario) when our Aces of Harmony chorus members...well a VLQ from the chorus...sang, reference was made to his involvement with your chorus, along with others here in Canada. I'll be in Tampa Bay for a week starting September 25th and would love to pop by to visit your chorus. I heard some wonderful tings about you guys from one of his daughters who flew in from her home in Indonesia for the funeral; she had often dropped Jack off for your Chapter meeting when visiting Florida. 15 Page 3 From the Pen of the President FLAG DAY SHOW photos Sunshine District supports BHS s Membership Program The Barbershop Harmony Society has announced an exciting new program for those who recruit new members. Starting this year, anyone who recruits five new members will have his Society dues waived the following year. Even better than that, the Society will prorate the dues waiver so that there will be a twenty percent reduction for every new member brought during the year. I think there can be no doubt that our Society is serious about encouraging membership growth! And the Sunshine District is participating in this program as well. Your Board has already agreed to waive 2007 district dues for anyone who brings five new members in 2006 but we have also agreed to guarantee the chapter dues for that guy as well. The Board is so sure that all the individual chapters will also agree to waive their chapter dues for their super recruiters that the District has agreed to remit the chapter dues amount to anyone who recruits five new members if his chapter does not agree to do so. So, time's a wastin'! Start telling your friends and neighbors about this wonderful hobby now. Be a friend; bring a friend! Shannon Elswick shannon@encore4.com Flag Day Photos continued on page 4

18 Weekly E-Newsletter June 25, 2006 Recent Ad Contest for Encore 06 For the Heralds recent annual show (ENCORE 06) men on the risers were challenged to sell program ads to increase not only the financial support of our chapter, but also generate additional community interest in our wonderful hobby. The results of those ad-selling efforts are now in. This year, the men of the Heralds sold FOUR TIMES as many program ads as last year, generating about 500% more ad revenue for the chorus than previously. The two standout ad sellers are pictured below. Selling most number of ads, and being framed by HoH, is Joe Kane (right). 19 Page 2 Steve Jamison Returning to the Heralds Rehearsal It happened before back in March, and coming in August, we ll have yet another chance for some outstanding coaching by our good friend, Steve Jamison. Steve has been a Barbershopper for 38 years and a Certified Judge for 25 years. He has served as faculty at Judging Category School, Harmony College, Directors' College, and many District HEP Schools. He is also a competitor who has sung and directed at Division, District, and Internationals many times. Steve has coached numerous championship quartets and choruses, as well as many groups aspiring to greatness. Steve has arranged over 200 charts (including Alexandria s Summertime ). BHS has published a number of his arrangements. In case you didn t realize it, Independence Day falls on a Tuesday this year. SO there will be NO REHEARSAL ON JULY 4th June rehearsal 27 July rehearsal 11, 18, International Convention in Indianapolis 11 Angels meeting & Scrap booking 19 HoH Board meeting August rehearsal 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 1 Angels meeting 8 - Scrap booking 23 HoH Board meeting September rehearsal 5, 12, 19, Annual Labor Day Jamboree 5 Angels meeting 12 - Scrap booking 13 HoH Board meeting Calendar of HoH October rehearsal 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 3 Angels meeting District contest in Jacksonville 10 - Scrap booking 11 HoH Board meeting November rehearsal 7, 14, 21, 28 7 Angels meeting 8 - HoH Board meeting 14 - Scrap booking 11 HoH Board meeting Board Meetings ( 12/13 ) 2006 Christmas Show December McDill Christmas performance December March HoH weekend coaching retreat 2007 Spring Show June International July 1-8, Denver, CO 2007 Christmas Show December?

20 Page 3 Our very special gratitude goes out to one of our faithful (and busy) members who has just completed the mammoth task of preparing a very large grant application on behalf of the Heralds to be presented to Hillsborough County. This award may likely generate an exceptional financial resource for our chapter. Many thanks, BILL PHIPPS, for a thorough and painstaking job. KUDOS - ONLY IN AMERICA... - do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front. - do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke. - do banks leave both doors open and then chain the pens to the counters. - do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage. - do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight. - do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering. AND EVER WONDER... Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin? Why don't you ever see the headline "Psychic Wins Lottery"? Why is it that doctors call what they do "practice"? Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons? Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker? Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour? Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food? Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections? Why don't sheep shrink when it rains? Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together? If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress? If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal? Another way to support our district representatives to International in Indy next month is by attending the Go for the Gold show being staged Saturday, June 24, by the Central Florida Chapter. Performances are set for 6 p.m., & 8:30 p.m. in the Savannah Center at The Villages. See for further information and driving directions. The shows are expected to feature appearances by the Metropolitans and the district quartets who also will be competing in Indianapolis. Tickets, on sale now, are $10 and must be purchased through the box office: (352)
